John 18 [NIV:NASB]

  1. When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it.
  2. Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
  3. So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
  4. Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, "Who is it you want?"
  5. "Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "I am he," Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)
  1. When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden, in which He entered with His disciples.
  2. Now Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often met there with His disciples.
  3. Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
  4. So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, "Whom do you seek?"
  5. They answered Him, "Jesus the Nazarene." He said to them, "I am He." And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.

  1. When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.
  2. Again he asked them, "Who is it you want?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."
  3. "I told you that I am he," Jesus answered. "If you are looking for me, then let these men go."
  4. This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: "I have not lost one of those you gave me."
  5. Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.)
  1. So when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground.
  2. Therefore He again asked them, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus the Nazarene."
  3. Jesus answered, "I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,"
  4. to fulfill the word which He spoke, "Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one."
  5. Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave's name was Malchus.

  1. Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"
  2. Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him
  3. and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.
  4. Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be good if one man died for the people.
  5. Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard,
  1. So Jesus said to Peter, "Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?"
  2. So the Roman cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him,
  3. and led Him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
  4. Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die on behalf of the people.
  5. Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest,

  1. but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
  2. "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked Peter. He replied, "I am not."
  3. It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
  4. Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
  5. "I have spoken openly to the world," Jesus replied. "I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.
  1. but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.
  2. Then the slave-girl who kept the door said to Peter, "You are not also one of this man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."
  3. Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
  4. The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching.
  5. Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret.

  1. Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said."
  2. When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby struck him in the face. "Is this the way you answer the high priest?" he demanded.
  3. "If I said something wrong," Jesus replied, "testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?"
  4. Then Annas sent him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.
  5. As Simon Peter stood warming himself, he was asked, "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not."
  1. "Why do you question Me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; they know what I said."
  2. When He had said this, one of the officers standing nearby struck Jesus, saying, "Is that the way You answer the high priest?"
  3. Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?"
  4. So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
  5. Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself So they said to him, "You are not also one of His disciples, are you?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."

  1. One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, "Didn't I see you with him in the olive grove?"
  2. Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
  3. Then the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness the Jews did not enter the palace; they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
  4. So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What charges are you bringing against this man?"
  5. "If he were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."
  1. One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with Him?"
  2. Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.
  3. Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
  4. Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this Man?"
  5. They answered and said to him, "If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you."

  1. Pilate said, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." "But we have no right to execute anyone," the Jews objected.
  2. This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken indicating the kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled.
  3. Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
  4. "Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others talk to you about me?"
  5. "Am I a Jew?" Pilate replied. "It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?"
  1. So Pilate said to them, "Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law." The Jews said to him, "We are not permitted to put anyone to death,"
  2. to fulfill the word of Jesus which He spoke, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.
  3. Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?"
  4. Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?"
  5. Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?"

  1. Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place."
  2. "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."
  3. "What is truth?" Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him.
  4. But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release 'the king of the Jews'?"
  5. They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!" Now Barabbas had taken part in a rebellion.
  1. Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm."
  2. Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."
  3. Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, "I find no guilt in Him.
  4. "But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release for you the King of the Jews?"
  5. So they cried out again, saying, "Not this Man, but Barabbas." Now Barabbas was a robber.
