Acts 13 [NIV:NASB]

  1. In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul.
  2. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
  3. So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
  4. The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.
  5. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper.
  1. Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
  2. While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
  3. Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
  4. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to Cyprus.
  5. When they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; and they also had John as their helper.

  1. They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus,
  2. who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God.
  3. But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith.
  4. Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said,
  5. "You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?
  1. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a magician, a Jewish false prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus,
  2. who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God.
  3. But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
  4. But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him,
  5. and said, "You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord?

  1. Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind, and for a time you will be unable to see the light of the sun." Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand.
  2. When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.
  3. From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem.
  4. From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down.
  5. After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue rulers sent word to them, saying, "Brothers, if you have a message of encouragement for the people, please speak."
  1. "Now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time." And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand.
  2. Then the proconsul believed when he saw what had happened, being amazed at the teaching of the Lord.
  3. Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia; but John left them and returned to Jerusalem.
  4. But going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.
  5. After the reading of the Law and the Prophets the synagogue officials sent to them, saying, "Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it."

  1. Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: "Men of Israel and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me!
  2. The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt, with mighty power he led them out of that country,
  3. he endured their conduct for about forty years in the desert,
  4. he overthrew seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to his people as their inheritance.
  5. All this took about 450 years. "After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet.
  1. Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, "Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen:
  2. "The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He led them out from it.
  3. "For a period of about forty years He put up with them in the wilderness.
  4. "When He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land as an inheritance--all of which took about four hundred and fifty years.
  5. "After these things He gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.

  1. Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years.
  2. After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'
  3. "From this man's descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised.
  4. Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.
  5. As John was completing his work, he said: 'Who do you think I am? I am not that one. No, but he is coming after me, whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.'
  1. "Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
  2. "After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, 'I HAVE FOUND DAVID the son of Jesse, A MAN AFTER MY HEART, who will do all My will.'
  3. "From the descendants of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus,
  4. after John had proclaimed before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
  5. "And while John was completing his course, he kept saying, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold, one is coming after me the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.'

  1. "Brothers, children of Abraham, and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent.
  2. The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.
  3. Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.
  4. When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.
  5. But God raised him from the dead,
  1. "Brethren, sons of Abraham's family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent.
  2. "For those who live in Jerusalem, and their rulers, recognizing neither Him nor the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him.
  3. "And though they found no ground for putting Him to death, they asked Pilate that He be executed.
  4. "When they had carried out all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the cross and laid Him in a tomb.
  5. "But God raised Him from the dead;

  1. and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.
  2. "We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers
  3. he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: " 'You are my Son; today I have become your Father.'
  4. The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words: " 'I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.'
  5. So it is stated elsewhere: " 'You will not let your Holy One see decay.'
  1. and for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His witnesses to the people.
  2. "And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers,
  3. that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, 'YOU ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.'
  4. "As for the fact that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: 'I WILL GIVE YOU THE HOLY and SURE blessings OF DAVID.'
  5. "Therefore He also says in another Psalm, 'YOU WILL NOT ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.'

  1. "For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed.
  2. But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.
  3. "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.
  4. Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses.
  5. Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:
  1. "For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay;
  2. but He whom God raised did not undergo decay.
  3. "Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,
  4. and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.
  5. "Therefore take heed, so that the thing spoken of in the Prophets may not come upon you:

  1. " 'Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.'"
  2. As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath.
  3. When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.
  4. On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
  5. When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and talked abusively against what Paul was saying.
  1. 'BEHOLD, YOU SCOFFERS, AND MARVEL, AND PERISH; FOR I AM ACCOMPLISHING A WORK IN YOUR DAYS, A WORK WHICH YOU WILL NEVER BELIEVE, THOUGH SOMEONE SHOULD DESCRIBE IT TO YOU.'"
  2. As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath.
  3. Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God.
  4. The next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord.
  5. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming.

  1. Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: "We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.
  2. For this is what the Lord has commanded us: " 'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'"
  3. When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.
  4. The word of the Lord spread through the whole region.
  5. But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.
  1. Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
  2. "For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I HAVE PLACED YOU AS A LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU MAY BRING SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.'"
  3. When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.
  4. And the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region.
  5. But the Jews incited the devout women of prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.

  1. So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium.
  2. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
  1. But they shook off the dust of their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium.
  2. And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
