Psalms 78 [NIV:NASB]

  1. O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.
  2. I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, things from of old-
  3. what we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us.
  4. We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.
  5. He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children,
  1. Listen, O my people, to my instruction; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
  2. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old,
  3. Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us.
  4. We will not conceal them from their children, But tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.
  5. For He established a testimony in Jacob And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers That they should teach them to their children,

  1. so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.
  2. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
  3. They would not be like their forefathers-- a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.
  4. The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned back on the day of battle;
  5. they did not keep God's covenant and refused to live by his law.
  1. That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, That they may arise and tell them to their children,
  2. That they should put their confidence in God And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments,
  3. And not be like their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that did not prepare its heart And whose spirit was not faithful to God.
  4. The sons of Ephraim were archers equipped with bows, Yet they turned back in the day of battle.
  5. They did not keep the covenant of God And refused to walk in His law;

  1. They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.
  2. He did miracles in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.
  3. He divided the sea and led them through; he made the water stand firm like a wall.
  4. He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.
  5. He split the rocks in the desert and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
  1. They forgot His deeds And His miracles that He had shown them.
  2. He wrought wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
  3. He divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand up like a heap.
  4. Then He led them with the cloud by day And all the night with a light of fire.
  5. He split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.

  1. he brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers.
  2. But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High.
  3. They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.
  4. They spoke against God, saying, "Can God spread a table in the desert?
  5. When he struck the rock, water gushed out, and streams flowed abundantly. But can he also give us food? Can he supply meat for his people?"
  1. He brought forth streams also from the rock And caused waters to run down like rivers.
  2. Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To rebel against the Most High in the desert.
  3. And in their heart they put God to the test By asking food according to their desire.
  4. Then they spoke against God; They said, "Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
  5. "Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He give bread also? Will He provide meat for His people?"

  1. When the LORD heard them, he was very angry; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel,
  2. for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance.
  3. Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens;
  4. he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven.
  5. Men ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.
  1. Therefore the LORD heard and was full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob And anger also mounted against Israel,
  2. Because they did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.
  3. Yet He commanded the clouds above And opened the doors of heaven;
  4. He rained down manna upon them to eat And gave them food from heaven.
  5. Man did eat the bread of angels; He sent them food in abundance.

  1. He let loose the east wind from the heavens and led forth the south wind by his power.
  2. He rained meat down on them like dust, flying birds like sand on the seashore.
  3. He made them come down inside their camp, all around their tents.
  4. They ate till they had more than enough, for he had given them what they craved.
  5. But before they turned from the food they craved, even while it was still in their mouths,
  1. He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens And by His power He directed the south wind.
  2. When He rained meat upon them like the dust, Even winged fowl like the sand of the seas,
  3. Then He let them fall in the midst of their camp, Round about their dwellings.
  4. So they ate and were well filled, And their desire He gave to them.
  5. Before they had satisfied their desire, While their food was in their mouths,

  1. God's anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young men of Israel.
  2. In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.
  3. So he ended their days in futility and their years in terror.
  4. Whenever God slew them, they would seek him; they eagerly turned to him again.
  5. They remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer.
  1. The anger of God rose against them And killed some of their stoutest ones, And subdued the choice men of Israel.
  2. In spite of all this they still sinned And did not believe in His wonderful works.
  3. So He brought their days to an end in futility And their years in sudden terror.
  4. When He killed them, then they sought Him, And returned and searched diligently for God;
  5. And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer.

  1. But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues;
  2. their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.
  3. Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath.
  4. He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return.
  5. How often they rebelled against him in the desert and grieved him in the wasteland!
  1. But they deceived Him with their mouth And lied to Him with their tongue.
  2. For their heart was not steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant.
  3. But He, being compassionate, forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them; And often He restrained His anger And did not arouse all His wrath.
  4. Thus He remembered that they were but flesh, A wind that passes and does not return.
  5. How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness And grieved Him in the desert!

  1. Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel.
  2. They did not remember his power-- the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,
  3. the day he displayed his miraculous signs in Egypt, his wonders in the region of Zoan.
  4. He turned their rivers to blood; they could not drink from their streams.
  5. He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them.
  1. Again and again they tempted God, And pained the Holy One of Israel.
  2. They did not remember His power, The day when He redeemed them from the adversary,
  3. When He performed His signs in Egypt And His marvels in the field of Zoan,
  4. And turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, they could not drink.
  5. He sent among them swarms of flies which devoured them, And frogs which destroyed them.

  1. He gave their crops to the grasshopper, their produce to the locust.
  2. He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
  3. He gave over their cattle to the hail, their livestock to bolts of lightning.
  4. He unleashed against them his hot anger, his wrath, indignation and hostility-- a band of destroying angels.
  5. He prepared a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death but gave them over to the plague.
  1. He gave also their crops to the grasshopper And the product of their labor to the locust.
  2. He destroyed their vines with hailstones And their sycamore trees with frost.
  3. He gave over their cattle also to the hailstones And their herds to bolts of lightning.
  4. He sent upon them His burning anger, Fury and indignation and trouble, A band of destroying angels.
  5. He leveled a path for His anger; He did not spare their soul from death, But gave over their life to the plague,

  1. He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt, the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.
  2. But he brought his people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the desert.
  3. He guided them safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed their enemies.
  4. Thus he brought them to the border of his holy land, to the hill country his right hand had taken.
  5. He drove out nations before them and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance; he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
  1. And smote all the firstborn in Egypt, The first issue of their virility in the tents of Ham.
  2. But He led forth His own people like sheep And guided them in the wilderness like a flock;
  3. He led them safely, so that they did not fear; But the sea engulfed their enemies.
  4. So He brought them to His holy land, To this hill country which His right hand had gained.
  5. He also drove out the nations before them And apportioned them for an inheritance by measurement, And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.

  1. But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes.
  2. Like their fathers they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow.
  3. They angered him with their high places; they aroused his jealousy with their idols.
  4. When God heard them, he was very angry; he rejected Israel completely.
  5. He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent he had set up among men.
  1. Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God And did not keep His testimonies,
  2. But turned back and acted treacherously like their fathers; They turned aside like a treacherous bow.
  3. For they provoked Him with their high places And aroused His jealousy with their graven images.
  4. When God heard, He was filled with wrath And greatly abhorred Israel;
  5. So that He abandoned the dwelling place at Shiloh, The tent which He had pitched among men,

  1. He sent the ark of his might into captivity, his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
  2. He gave his people over to the sword; he was very angry with his inheritance.
  3. Fire consumed their young men, and their maidens had no wedding songs;
  4. their priests were put to the sword, and their widows could not weep.
  5. Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, as a man wakes from the stupor of wine.
  1. And gave up His strength to captivity And His glory into the hand of the adversary.
  2. He also delivered His people to the sword, And was filled with wrath at His inheritance.
  3. Fire devoured His young men, And His virgins had no wedding songs.
  4. His priests fell by the sword, And His widows could not weep.
  5. Then the Lord awoke as if from sleep, Like a warrior overcome by wine.

  1. He beat back his enemies; he put them to everlasting shame.
  2. Then he rejected the tents of Joseph, he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;
  3. but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved.
  4. He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever.
  5. He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens;
  1. He drove His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting reproach.
  2. He also rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
  3. But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which He loved.
  4. And He built His sanctuary like the heights, Like the earth which He has founded forever.
  5. He also chose David His servant And took him from the sheepfolds;

  1. from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance.
  2. And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.
  1. From the care of the ewes with suckling lambs He brought him To shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel His inheritance.
  2. So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them with his skillful hands.
