- 존경하는 데오필로님, 우리들 사이에서 일어난 그 일들을 글로 엮는 데 손을 댄 사람들이 여럿 있었습니다.
- 그들이 쓴 것은 처음부터 직접 눈으로 보고 말씀을 전파한 사람들이 우리에게 전해 준 사실 그대로입니다.
- 저 역시 이 모든 일들을 처음부터 자세히 조사해 둔 바 있으므로 그것을 순서대로 정리하여 각하께 써서 보내드리는 것이 좋겠다고 생각하였습니다.
- 그러하오니 이 글을 보시고 이미 듣고 배우신 것들이 틀림없는 사실이라는 것을 알아주시기 바랍니다.
- 헤로데가 유다의 왕이었을 때에 아비야 조에 속하는 사제 한 사람이 있었는데 그 이름은 즈가리야였고 그의 아내는 사제 아론의 후예로서 이름은 엘리사벳이었다.

- Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
- Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
- It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
- That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
- THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

- 이 부부는 다 같이 주님의 모든 계명과 규율을 어김없이 지키며 하느님 앞에서 의롭게 살았다.
- 그런데 그들에게는 아이가 없었다. 엘리사벳은 원래 아기를 낳지 못하는 여자인데다가 이제는 내외가 다 나이가 많았다.
- 어느 날 즈가리야는 자기 조의 차례가 되어 하느님 앞에서 사제 직분을 이행하게 되었다.
- 사제들의 관례에 따라 주님의 성소에 들어가 분향할 사람을 제비뽑아 정하였는데 즈가리야가 뽑혀 그 일을 맡게 되었다.
- 안에서 즈가리야가 분향하고 있는 동안 밖에서는 많은 사람들이 모여 기도를 드리고 있었다.

- And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
- And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
- And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
- According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
- And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

- 그 때에 주님의 천사가 즈가리야에게 나타나 분향 제단 오른쪽에 서 있었다.
- 이것을 본 즈가리야는 몹시 당황하여 두려움에 사로잡혔다.
- 그 때에 천사가 이렇게 말하였다. "두려워하지 마라, 즈가리야. 하느님께서 네 간구를 들어주셨다. 네 아내 엘리사벳이 아들을 낳을 터이니 아기의 이름을 요한이라 하여라.
- 너도 기뻐하고 즐거워할 터이지만, 많은 사람이 또한 그의 탄생을 기뻐할 것이다.
- 그는 주님 보시기에 훌륭한 인물이 되겠기 때문이다. 그는 포도주나 그 밖의 어떤 술도 마시지 않겠고 어머니 태중에서부터 성령을 가득히 받을 것이며

- And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
- And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
- But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
- And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
- For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

- 많은 이스라엘 백성을 그들의 주 하느님의 품으로 다시 데려올 것이다.
- 그가 바로 엘리야의 정신과 능력을 가지고 주님보다 먼저 올 사람이다. 그는 아비와 자식을 화해시키고 거역하는 자들에게 올바른 생각을 하게 하여 주님을 맞아들일 만한 백성이 되도록 준비할 것이다."
- 이 말을 들은 즈가리야가 "저는 늙은이입니다. 제 아내도 나이가 많습니다. 무엇을 보고 그런 일을 믿으라는 말씀입니까?" 하고 말하자
- 천사는 이렇게 대답하였다. "나는 하느님을 모시는 시종 가브리엘이다. 이 기쁜 소식을 전하라는 분부를 받들고 너에게 와 일러주었는데,
- 때가 오면 이루어질 내 말을 믿지 않았으니 이 일이 이루어지는 날까지 너는 벙어리가 되어 말을 못하게 될 것이다."

- And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
- And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
- And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
- And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
- And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

- 그러는 동안 사람들은 즈가리야가 나오기를 기다리고 있었는데 그가 성소 안에 오랫동안 머물고 있으므로 이상하게 여겼다.
- 드디어 그가 밖으로 나왔으나 말을 못하는 것을 보고 그들은 즈가리야가 성소에서 무슨 신비로운 것을 보았음을 알게 되었다. 벙어리가 된 즈가리야는 말을 못하고 손짓으로 시늉만 할 뿐이었다.
- 즈가리야는 사제 당번의 기간이 끝나서 집으로 돌아왔다.
- 그 뒤에 그의 아내 엘리사벳은 아기를 가지게 되어 다섯 달 동안 들어앉아 있으면서
- "마침내 주님께서 나를 이렇게 도와주셔서 나도 이제는 사람들 앞에 부끄럽지 않게 되었구나." 하고 생각하였다.

- And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
- And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
- And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
- And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
- Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
