- 이 말을 듣고 온 회중은 떠들썩하게 아우성을 쳤다. 그 날 밤새도록 통곡하며
- 온 이스라엘 백성이 모세와 아론을 원망하였다. "차라리 우리가 이집트 땅에서 죽었더라면 좋았을 것이다. 아니 이 광야에서 죽었더라도 더 좋았겠다.
- 야훼는 어쩌자고 우리를 이리로 데려 내다가 칼에 맞아 죽게 하는가? 아내와 어린것들이 적에게 붙잡혀가게 하는가? 이집트로 돌아가는 수밖에 없겠다!"
- 이렇게 수선을 피우며 그들은 지도자를 하나 뽑아 세우고 이집트로 돌아가자고 서로 의논하였다.
- 모세와 아론은 온 이스라엘 백성의 회중 앞에 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드렸다.

- And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
- And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!
- And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
- And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
- Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

- 그러자 가나안 땅을 정탐하고 온 사람들 중에서 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여분네의 아들 갈렙이 옷을 찢으며,
- 온 이스라엘 백성의 회중을 향하여 외쳤다. "우리가 돌아다니며 정탐하고 온 땅은 기막히게 좋은 땅이오.
- 우리가 야훼의 마음에 들기만 하면, 우리는 그 땅으로 들어가 차지할 수 있을 것이오. 그 땅은 정녕 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅이오.
- 야훼를 거역하는 짓은 하지 맙시다. 그 땅 백성을 두려워하지 마시오. 그들은 이미 우리의 밥이오. 그들을 덮어주던 그늘은 이미 지나가 버렸소. 야훼께서 우리의 편이시니, 두려워하지 맙시다."
- 온 회중이 그들을 막 돌로 치려고 하는데, 야훼의 영광이 만남의 장막에서 온 이스라엘 백성에게 나타났다.

- And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
- And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
- If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
- Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.
- But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.

- 야훼께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "이 백성은 언제까지 나를 멸시할 것이냐? 그렇게도 내 힘을 나타내 보였는데 아직도 나를 믿지 못하는구나.
- 나 이제 염병을 내려 이 백성을 없애버리고 이들보다 훨씬 큰 민족을 너에게서 일으키리라."
- 모세가 야훼께 호소하였다. "하느님께서 몸소 힘을 내시어 이 백성을 이집트에서 이끌어내셨다는 말을 모든 이집트인이 다 들었습니다.
- 야훼께서 이 백성 가운데 계시다는 소식이 여기에 사는 사람들에게도 널리 퍼졌습니다. 야훼께서는 눈에 보이게 나타나시어 이 백성을 구름으로 덮어주시고 낮에는 구름기둥으로 밤에는 불기둥으로 앞길을 인도해 주시었습니다.
- 그런데 이 백성을 모조리 없애버리시면, 하느님의 이야기를 들어 아는 민족들이 어떻게 말하겠습니까?

- And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
- I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
- And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
- And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
- Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,

- '야훼는 맹세만 하였을 뿐, 백성을 그리로 데려갈 힘이 없어서 광야에서 멸종시켰다.' 하지 않겠습니까?
- 아닙니다. 주여, 이제 주님의 크신 힘을 약속하셨던 대로 나타내 주십시오.
- '야훼께서는 좀처럼 화를 내지 않으시고 끝없이 사랑하시며 미쁘시어, 짐짓 거역하고 반항한 죄도 용서하신다. 어떤 죄든지 그냥 넘기시지는 않지만 선조의 죄를 그 후손 삼, 사대에게만 물으신다.' 하시지 않으셨습니까?
- 하느님의 사랑은 그지없으시어 이 백성을 이집트에서 여기까지 이끌어오시는 동안 참아주셨습니다. 이번에도 이 백성의 죄를 용서해 주십시오."
- 야훼께서 대답하셨다. "내가 네 말대로 용서해 준다.

- Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
- And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my LORD be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
- The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
- Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
- And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word:

- 그러나 내가 살아 있는 한, 이 야훼의 영광이 온 땅을 채우고 있는 한, 이루어질 수 없는 일이 있다.
- 나의 영광을 보고도, 내가 이집트와 광야에서 나타낸 힘을 보고도 이렇게 거듭거듭 나를 시험하고 나의 말을 듣지 않는 자들은 그 누구도
- 내가 저희 선조에게 주겠다고 맹세한 땅을 보지 못하리라. 이토록 나를 업신여기는 자는 결코 그 땅을 보지 못하리라.
- 그러나 나의 종 갈렙은 그 마음이 남과 달라 나의 뜻을 따라 할 일을 다 하였다. 그러므로 나는 그로 하여금 가서 보고 온 땅으로 다시 들어가도록 하겠고, 그의 후손이 그 땅을 차지하도록 해주리라.
- 아말렉 사람들과 가나안 사람들이 저 골짜기에 살고 있다. 그러니 너희는 내일 발길을 돌려 홍해 쪽 광야로 떠나거라."

- But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.
- Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
- Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
- But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
- (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) Tomorrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

- 야훼께서 모세와 아론에게 이르셨다.
- "이 못된 회중은 언제까지 나에게 투덜거릴 것이냐? 이스라엘 백성이 투덜거리는 불평 소리를 나는 들었다.
- 너희는 이 백성에게 나 야훼의 말이라 하고 이렇게 일러라. '너희가 나에게 무엇을 원하는지 내가 다 들었다. 내가 살아 있는 한, 반드시 그대로 이루어주겠다.
- 바로 이 광야에 너희의 시체가 즐비하게 뒹굴 것이다. 너희 가운데 스무 살이 넘어 병적부에 오른 자로서 나에게 불평한 자는 그 누구도
- 내가 정착시켜 주겠다고 손들어 맹세한 그 땅으로 들어가지 못하리라. 여분네의 아들 갈렙과 눈의 아들 여호수아만이 들어가리라.

- And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
- How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
- Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
- Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward which have murmured against me.
- Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

- 또한 너희가, 포로가 되어 끌려가면 어쩌나 하고 걱정하던 너희 어린 아이들은 너희가 거부한 땅으로 내가 데리고 들어가리라. 그 땅은 그들의 차지가 되리라.
- 그러나 너희들은 죽어 시체가 되어 이 광야에 쓰러지고 말리라.
- 그리고 너희의 자식들은 너희의 배신죄를 짊어지고 너희의 시체가 썩어 없어질 때까지 사십 년 동안 광야에서 헤매야 한다.
- 너희가 사십 일 동안 그 땅을 정탐하였으니, 그 하루를 한 해로 쳐서 사십 년 동안 너희는 너희의 죄의 짐을 져야 한다. 그제야 나를 배반하는 일이 어떤 일인지 너희는 알게 되리라.'
- 나 야훼가 말한다. 한 무리가 되어 나를 거역한 이 고약한 자들을, 내가 반드시 이렇게 다루고야 말리라. 이 광야에서 하나도 남지 않고 모두 죽으리라."

- But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
- But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
- And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
- After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
- I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

- 모세가 가나안 땅을 정탐하라고 보냈던 사람들은 돌아와서 온 이스라엘 회중에게 그 고장은 사람 살 곳이 못 된다고 선동하여 모세를 원망하게 하였다.
- 이렇게 그 고장을 악평한 자들은 야훼께 벌을 받아 염병으로 죽었다.
- 그 땅을 정탐하러 갔던 자들 가운데 살아 남은 사람은 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여분네의 아들 갈렙뿐이었다.
- 모세가 야훼께 들은 대로 온 이스라엘 백성에게 일러주자, 그들은 대성통곡하였다.
- 이튿날 아침 그들은 일찍 일어나 산꼭대기를 향해 치달으며 외쳤다. "어서 쳐 올라가자. 우리가 올라가지 않았다고 야훼께서 꾸중하시는데, 이러고만 있을 터이냐?"

- And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
- Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
- But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
- And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
- And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.

- 그러나 모세는 한사코 말렸다. "왜들 이러느냐? 야훼의 명령을 무시하고 무슨 일이 되겠느냐?
- 올라갈 생각을 마라. 야훼께서는 이미 너희를 떠나셨다. 너희끼리 쳐 올라갔다가는
- 거기에서 적에게 패하리라. 아말렉 사람들과 가나안 사람들이 너희에게 달려들어 칼로 무찌를 것이다. 너희는 야훼를 배반하여 야훼의 눈 밖에 나고 말았다."
- 그들은 말을 듣지 않고 산꼭대기를 향하여 치달았다. 그러나 야훼의 계약궤도 모세도 진을 떠나지 않았다.
- 그 산에서 살던 아말렉 사람들과 가나안 사람들이 달려 내려와 호르마까지 쫓아오며 그들을 무찔렀다.

- And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.
- Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
- For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.
- But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
- Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
