- 얼마 뒤에 유다인의 명절이 되어 예수께서 예루살렘에 올라가셨다.
- 예루살렘 양의 문 곁에는 히브리 말로 베짜타라는 못이 있었고 그 둘레에는 행각 다섯이 서 있었다.
- 이 행각에는 소경과 절름발이와 중풍병자 등 수많은 병자들이 누워 있었는데 (그들은 물이 움직이기를 기다리고 있었다.
- 이따금 주님의 천사가 그 못에 내려와 물을 휘젓곤 하였는데 물이 움직일 때에 맨 먼저 못에 들어가는 사람은 무슨 병이라도 다 나았던 것이다.)
- 그들 중에는 삼십팔 년이나 앓고 있는 병자도 있었다.

- After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
- Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
- In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
- For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
- And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

- 예수께서 그 사람이 거기 누워 있는 것을 보시고 또 아주 오래된 병자라는 것을 아시고는 그에게 "낫기를 원하느냐?" 하고 물으셨다.
- 병자는 "선생님, 그렇지만 저에겐 물이 움직여도 물에 넣어줄 사람이 없습니다. 그래서 저 혼자 가는 동안에 딴 사람이 먼저 못에 들어갑니다." 하고 대답하였다.
- 예수께서 "일어나 요를 걷어들고 걸어가거라." 하시자
- 그 사람은 어느새 병이 나아서 요를 걷어들고 걸어갔다. 그 날은 마침 안식일이었다.
- 그래서 유다인들은 병이 나은 그 사람에게 "오늘은 안식일이니까 요를 들고 가서는 안 된다." 하고 나무랐다.

- When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
- The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
- Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
- And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
- The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

- "나를 고쳐주신 분이 나더러 요를 걷어들고 걸어가라고 하셨습니다." 그가 이렇게 대꾸하자
- 그들은 "너더러 요를 걷어들고 걸어가라고 한 사람이 도대체 누구냐?" 하고 물었다.
- 그러나 병이 나은 그 사람은 자기를 고쳐준 사람이 누군지 알 수 없었다. 예수께서는 이미 자리를 뜨셨고 그 곳에는 많은 사람이 붐볐기 때문이다.
- 얼마 뒤에 예수께서 성전에서 그 사람을 만나 "자, 지금은 네 병이 말끔히 나았다. 다시는 죄를 짓지 마라. 그렇지 않으면 더욱 흉한 일이 너에게 생길지도 모른다." 하고 일러주셨다.
- 그 사람은 유다인들에게 가서 자기 병을 고쳐주신 분이 예수라고 말하였다.

- He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
- Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
- And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
- Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
- The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

- 이 때부터 유다인들은 예수께서 안식일에 이런 일을 하신다 하여 예수를 박해하기 시작하였다.
- 그러나 예수께서는 그들에게 "내 아버지께서 언제나 일하고 계시니 나도 일하는 것이다." 하고 말씀하셨다.
- 이 때문에 유다인들은 예수를 죽이려는 마음을 더욱 굳혔다. 예수께서 안식일법을 어기셨을 뿐만 아니라 하느님을 자기 아버지라고 하시며 자기를 하느님과 같다고 하셨기 때문이다.

- And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
- But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
- Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
