	예레미야 37:1-38:28 시드기야가 왕위에 오른 후, 애굽의 군대가 예루살렘에 진격해 오자 바벨론 군대가 일시적으로 철수하였다. 시드기야 왕은 이 상황을 바벨론으로부터 유다가 구원받는 절호의 기회로 보고 예레미야에게 기도를 요청했다. 그러나 예레미야는 다시 바벨론이 침공할 것이라고 예언했다. 이로 인해 예레미야는 구덩이에 갇히게 되었지만 아벳멜렉에 의해 구출받았다. 시드기야 왕은 비밀리에 예레미야를 만나 바벨론에 항복할 것을 권고받지만 예레미야의 경고를 듣지 않았다.

	시드기야와 예레미야(37:1-37:21)

바빌론 왕 느부갓네살은 여호야킴의 아들 여고니야를 왕위에서 몰아낸 다음 요시야의 아들 시드키야를 유다 지방을 다스릴 왕으로 앉혔다.

그런데 새 왕이나 신하나 지방유지들은 예언자 예레미야가 전한 야훼의 말씀을 들으려고 하지 않았다.

시드키야 왕은 셀레미야의 아들 여후갈과 마아세야의 아들 스바니야 사제를 예언자 예레미야에게 보내어 "우리 일이 잘되도록 하느님 야훼께 기도 드려 주시오." 하고 부탁하였다.

그 때는 예레미야가 아직 감옥에 갇히지 않아 백성 가운데 출입을 하고 있던 때였고

예루살렘을 포위하고 있던 바빌론 군이 파라오 군대가 이집트에서 출동하였다는 소식을 듣고 예루살렘에서 물러간 때였다.

And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.

But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the LORD, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.

And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the LORD our God for us.

Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.

Then Pharaoh's army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

그 무렵 예언자 예레미야에게 야훼의 말씀이 내렸다.

"나 야훼가 이스라엘의 하느님으로서 말한다. 내 뜻을 알고자 너희를 보낸 유다 왕에게 가서 이렇게 전하여라. '너희를 도우러 출동하였다는 파라오의 군대는 제 나라 이집트로 돌아가리라.

그리고 바빌론 군은 되돌아와 이 성읍을 공격하여 점령하고 불사르리라.

나 야훼가 말한다. 바빌론 군이 아주 가버렸다고 터무니없는 생각을 하지 마라. 바빌론 군은 가지 않는다.

너희를 공격하는 바빌론 군을 너희가 다 쳐부수어 부상병들만 남겨놓았다고 할지라도, 그 부상병들이 저희의 천막에서 일어나 이 성읍에 불을 지를 것이다.'"

Then came the word of the LORD unto the prophet Jeremiah saying,

Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh's army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.

And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.

Thus saith the LORD; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.

For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

쳐 올라오는 파라오의 군대에 위협을 받은 바빌론 군이 예루살렘에서 물러간 틈을 타서,

예레미야가 베냐민 지방에 있는 문중의 땅을 유산으로 받으려고 예루살렘을 떠나는 길이었다.

예레미야가 베냐민 대문에 이르렀을 때, 거기에는 이리야라는 수문장이 있었다. 이리야는 하나니야의 손자이자 셀레미야의 아들이었다. 그 수문장이 예언자 예레미야를 붙잡고 물었다. "바빌론 진지로 망명가는 길이지요?"

예레미야가 그에게 대답했다. "내가 바빌론 진지로 망명가다니, 어림도 없는 소리요." 이리야는 그 말을 곧이듣지 않고, 예레미야를 체포하여 대신들에게 넘겼다.

대신들은 예레미야를 괘씸하게 여겨 매를 때리고 나서 국무대신 여호나단의 관저에 있는 구치소에 가두었다. 사람들이 그 곳을 감옥으로 만들었던 것이다.

And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,

Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.

And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.

Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.

Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

그 곳은 천장이 둥근 지하실이었는데, 예레미야는 거기에 오랫동안 갇혀 있었다.

하루는 시드키야 왕이 예레미야를 몰래 왕궁으로 불러다가 물었다. "야훼로부터 무슨 말씀이 안 계셨소?" "말씀이 계셨습니다. 임금님께서는 바빌론 왕의 손에 넘어가실 것이오." 예레미야는 이렇게 대답하고 나서

시드키야 왕에게 호소했다. "소인이 임금님이나 임금님의 신하들이나 그 유지들에게 무슨 못할 짓을 하였다고 감옥에 가두십니까?

'바빌론 왕은 이 나라를 쳐들어오지 않는다. 임금님과 그를 둘러싼 모든 사람을 치러오지 않는다.'고 예언하던 임금님의 예언자들은 어디로 갔지요?

임금님, 이제 소인의 청을 들어주십시오. 소인의 간청을 받아주시어 국무대신 여호나단의 관저로 돌려보내지 말아주십시오. 거기에 가면 소인은 죽습니다."

When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?

Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?

Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

시드키야 왕은, 예레미야를 근위대 울 안에 가두고 성중에 양식이 떨어질 때까지 날마다 가게에서 빵 한 덩이씩 가져다 주라고 명령하였다. 그리하여 예레미야는 근위대 울 안에서 지내게 되었다.

Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

	살아난 예레미야(38:1-38:28)

예레미야가 온 국민에게 하고 다니는 말을 마딴의 아들 스바티야와 바스훌의 아들 게달리야와 셀레미야의 아들 유갈과 말기야의 아들 바스훌이 들었다. 예레미야가 한 말은 이러했다.

"나 야훼가 말한다. 이 성 안에 버티고 있다가는 칼에 맞아 죽거나 굶어 죽거나 병들어 죽으리라. 그러나 나가서 바빌론 군에 항복하면 살리라. 목숨 하나 건지는 것을 불행 중 다행으로 여기게 될 것이다.

나 야훼가 말한다. 이 성은 틀림없이 바빌론 군에게 점령되어 지배를 받게 되리라."

대신들은 이 말을 걸어 예레미야를 어전에 고발했다. "이자는 죽여야 합니다. 이자가 하는 말을 듣고, 성 안에 남아서 싸우는 군인과 백성들은 모두 사기가 떨어졌습니다. 이자는 이 백성이 잘되도록 하지 않고 못되도록 하고 있습니다."

시드키야 왕은 그들을 막을 힘이 없었다. 그래서 마음대로 하라고 하자,

Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,

Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.

Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which shall take it.

Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.

대신들은 예레미야를 끌어다가 줄에 매달아 근위대 울 안에 있는 왕족 말기야의 집 웅덩이에 내려보냈다. 그 웅덩이는 물이 없는 진흙구덩이였다. 예레미야는 그 진흙구덩이에 빠졌다.

왕궁 내시로 에벳멜렉이라는 에티오피아 사람이 있었다. 그는 예레미야가 구덩이에 들어갔다는 말을 들었다. 그 때 왕은 베냐민 대문께 앉아 있었는데,

에벳멜렉이 왕궁에서 나와 왕 앞에 이르러 아뢰었다.

"임금님, 예언자 예레미야를 그렇게 대접하시다니, 그것은 잘못입니다. 구덩이에 처넣어 굶겨 죽이시다니, 그럴 수가 없습니다. 이미 성 안에는 빵이 떨어졌습니다."

이 말을 듣고 왕은 에벳멜렉에게 명령을 내렸다. "여기 있는 세 사람을 데리고 가서, 예언자 예레미야를 죽기 전에 구덩이에서 끌어내어라."

Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;

Ebedmelech went forth out of the king's house, and spake to the king saying,

My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.

Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

에벳멜렉은 사람들을 데리고 왕궁 보물 창고에 가서 해어지고 찢어진 옷조각들을 꺼내다가 줄에 매달아 구덩이 안에 있는 예레미야에게 내려주었다.

그리고는 그 해어지고 찢어진 옷 조각들을 겨드랑이 밑에 대고 줄에 매달리라고 하였다. 예레미야가 그대로 하자,

사람들이 줄을 당겨 예레미야를 구덩이에서 끌어올렸다. 예레미야는 근위대 울 안에서 지내게 되었다.

시드키야 왕이 야훼의 성전 셋째 출입구로 예언자 예레미야를 불러들여 물었다. "그대에게 한 가지 물어볼 것이 있소. 숨기지 말고 말하여 주오."

예레미야가 "소인이 바른 말을 하면 임금님께서는 틀림없이 소인을 죽이실 것입니다. 소인이 말씀드려도 임금님께서는 듣지 않으실 것입니다." 하고 대답하자,

So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

And Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.

Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me?

시드키야 왕은 예레미야에게 은근히 맹세하면서 다짐하였다. "우리에게 목숨을 주시는 야훼께서 살아 계시는 한 나는 절대로 그대를 죽이지 않을 것이오. 그대의 목숨을 노리는 자들의 손에 넘겨주지 않을 것이오."

이렇게 다짐을 받고 예레미야는 시드키야에게 야훼의 말씀을 전하였다. "만군의 야훼께서 이스라엘의 하느님으로서 말씀하십니다. '너는 바빌론 왕이 보낸 장군들에게 항복해야 한다. 그래야 너는 목숨을 건지고 이 성은 잿더미가 되지 않을 것이며, 너와 너의 집안 식구들이 살 것이다.

그러나 네가 바빌론 왕이 보낸 장군들에게 항복하지 않으면, 이 성은 바빌론 군의 수중에 들어가 잿더미가 되리라. 그리고 너도 그 손에서 벗어나지 못하리라.'"

이 말을 듣고 시드키야 왕은 예레미야에게 말하였다. "나는 바빌론 군 편으로 이미 넘어간 유다 사람들이 무섭소. 나를 그 사람들에게 내어주면 어떻게 되겠소? 참혹한 꼴을 당할 것이 아니오?"

예레미야가 대답하였다. "그 사람들 손에 넘어가시지 않을 것입니다. 부디 소인이 전하는 야훼의 말씀을 들으십시오. 그래야 임금님의 앞길이 열릴 것입니다. 그래야 임금님께서는 목숨을 건지십니다.

So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:

But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.

그러나 임금님께서 항복하러 나가지 않으신다면, 야훼께서 소인에게 일러주신 대로 그런 참혹한 일을 당하십니다.

유다 왕궁에 남아 있는 여인들은 모두 바빌론 왕의 장군들에게 끌려갈 것입니다. 끌려가면서 이렇게 울부짖을 것입니다. '왕은 가깝다는 자들의 꾐에 빠져 망하였다. 왕의 다리를 진창에 빠뜨려놓고 저희들만 도망쳤구나.'

임금님의 후궁들과 왕자들도 바빌론 군에게 끌려갈 것입니다. 임금님께서도 벗어나지 못하시고 바빌론 왕의 손에 붙잡히십니다. 그리고 이 성은 잿더미가 될 것입니다."

그러자 시드키야가 예레미야에게 당부했다. "내가 그대와 이야기한 내용을 아무에게도 누설하지 마시오. 누설했다가는 살아나지 못할 테니까.

내가 그대와 이야기하였다는 소문을 듣고 대신들이 그대에게 와서, 왕에게 무슨 말을 하였으며 왕한테서 무슨 말을 들었는지 말하라고 하며 숨기면 죽인다고 할는지도 모르오.

But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD hath shewed me:

And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.

So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.

Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:

그럴지라도 그대는 여호나단의 집에 돌려보내어 죽음을 당하지 않게 하여달라고 나에게 간청하였을 뿐이라고 대답하시오."

과연, 대신들이 모두 예레미야에게 몰려와서 물었다. 그러나 예레미야는 왕이 시킨 대로만 대답하였다. 왕과 이야기한 내용을 하나도 말하여 주지 않았기 때문에, 그들은 예레미야를 어떻게 건드릴 수가 없었다.

예레미야는 예루살렘이 점령되는 날까지 근위대 울 안에 머물렀다.

Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.

Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

	고니야( 37:1) 여호야긴

	음실(陰室, 37:16) 본래 ‘무덤’을 뜻하나, 여기서는 어둡고 더러운 지하 감옥을 가리킴
