- 그 무렵에, 사람들은 모세의 책을 백성에게 읽어주다가 이런 말을 발견하였다. "암몬 사람과 모압 사람은 하느님의 성회에 들어올 수 없다.
- 그들은 먹을 것, 마실 것을 가지고 나와 이스라엘 백성을 맞아들이지 않았고, 발람에게 돈을 주어 저주를 빌게 한 것들이다. 그랬건만 우리 하느님께서는 그 저주를 복으로 바꾸어주셨다."
- 이스라엘 백성은 이 법을 듣고 저희 가운데서 딴 피가 섞인 사람들을 다 몰아내었다.
- 이 일이 있기 전이었다. 사제 엘랴십은 우리 하느님의 성전 창고 관리인으로 임명되었었는데, 토비야와 가까운 사이였으므로
- 그에게 큰 방을 차려주었다. 그 방은 전에 곡식예물과 향과 성전 그릇을 두던 곳이요, 십분의 일세로 거두어들여 레위인과 합창대원과 수위에게 줄 곡식과 술과 기름, 또 사제들의 몫으로 봉헌된 것을 보관해 두던 곳이었다.

- On that day they read aloud from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and there was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God,
- because they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them However, our God turned the curse into a blessing.
- So when they heard the law, they excluded all foreigners from Israel.
- Now prior to this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, being related to Tobiah,
- had prepared a large room for him, where formerly they put the grain offerings, the frankincense, the utensils and the tithes of grain, wine and oil prescribed for the Levites, the singers and the gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests.

- 이 모든 일은 내가 바빌론 황제 아르닥사싸 삼십이 년에 황제를 뵈러 가고 예루살렘에 없는 동안 있었던 일이다. 얼마 지나서 내가 황제의 허락을 받아가지고
- 예루살렘으로 돌아와 보니 엘랴십이 하느님의 성전 뜰 안에 토비야가 거처할 방을 차려준 것이었다.
- 나는 이런 당치도 않은 일에 치미는 분노를 참을 길 없어 토비야의 집 세간을 모두 방 밖으로 내던지고
- 그 방을 정하게 한 다음 하느님의 성전 그릇과 곡식예물과 향을 도로 가져다 두게 하였다.
- 그동안 레위인들은 받을 몫을 받지 못하고 있었다. 그래서 레위인들과 합창대원들은 제사 때에 해야 할 일을 저버리고 저마다 밭이 있는 곳으로 가버리고 말았다. 나는 이것을 알고

- But during all this time I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had gone to the king. After some time, however, I asked leave from the king,
- and I came to Jerusalem and learned about the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, by preparing a room for him in the courts of the house of God.
- It was very displeasing to me, so I threw all of Tobiah's household goods out of the room.
- Then I gave an order and they cleansed the rooms; and I returned there the utensils of the house of God with the grain offerings and the frankincense.
- I also discovered that the portions of the Levites had not been given them, so that the Levites and the singers who performed the service had gone away, each to his own field.

- "어찌하여 하느님의 성전을 내버려두었느냐?" 하고 관리들을 꾸짖고 레위인들을 다시 불러들여 복직시켰다.
- 그러자 온 유다인들이 곡식과 술과 기름 십분의 일세를 창고에 가져다 바쳤다.
- 나는 창고 책임자로 사제 셀레미야와 선비 사독, 그리고 레위인으로서는 브다야를 임명하고 마따니야의 손자요, 자구르의 아들인 하난을 조수로 붙여주었다. 이 사람들은 믿을 만하다고 여겨져 동료들에게 돌아갈 몫을 고루 분배하는 일을 맡겼다.
- 나의 하느님이여, 제가 한 일을 잊지 말아주십시오. 나는 하느님의 성전을 보살피고 예배를 드릴 수 있도록 정성을 다했습니다. 아무쪼록 이 일을 지워버리지 말아주십시오.
- 그 때 유다에서는 안식일인데도 술을 빚고 나귀에 곡식을 단으로 묶어 실어 들이고 포도주, 포도송이, 무화과 같은 것을 예루살렘으로 날라 들였다. 나는 이 사실을 보고, 이 같은 날에 양식을 사고 팔다니 안 될 일이라고 야단쳤다.

- So I reprimanded the officials and said, "Why is the house of God forsaken?" Then I gathered them together and restored them to their posts.
- All Judah then brought the tithe of the grain, wine and oil into the storehouses.
- In charge of the storehouses I appointed Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and in addition to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were considered reliable, and it was their task to distribute to their kinsmen.
- Remember me for this, O my God, and do not blot out my loyal deeds which I have performed for the house of my God and its services.
- In those days I saw in Judah some who were treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sacks of grain and loading them on donkeys, as well as wine, grapes, figs and all kinds of loads, and they brought them into Jerusalem on the sabbath day So I admonished them on the day they sold food.

- 예루살렘에는 띠로 사람들도 살고 있었다. 그들은 안식일에 물고기 등 갖가지 상품을 예루살렘으로 들여다가 유다인들에게 팔았다.
- 나는 유다의 귀족들을 꾸짖었다. "당신들은 어찌하여 이런 못할 일을 하여 안식일을 모독하는가?
- 선조들이 이런 일을 했기 때문에 하느님께서 우리와 이 도성 위에 이 모든 재앙을 내리셨던 것이 아닌가? 그런데 당신들은 다시 안식일을 모독하니, 그래 하느님의 진노가 이스라엘 위에 떨어져도 좋단 말인가?"
- 그리고 나는 이렇게 지시하였다. "안식일이 되기 전 예루살렘 성문에 그림자만 드리우면 성문을 닫아라." 또 안식일이 지나기까지 문을 열지 못하게 지시한 다음, 나의 수하 젊은이들을 성문마다 배치하여 안식일에 아무것도 들이지 못하게 하였다.
- 그 후에도 한두 번 갖가지 물건을 파는 상인들이 밤에 예루살렘 성 밖에서 묵는 것을 보고,

- Also men of Tyre were living there who imported fish and all kinds of merchandise, and sold them to the sons of Judah on the sabbath, even in Jerusalem.
- Then I reprimanded the nobles of Judah and said to them, "What is this evil thing you are doing, by profaning the sabbath day?
- "Did not your fathers do the same, so that our God brought on us and on this city all this trouble? Yet you are adding to the wrath on Israel by profaning the sabbath."
- It came about that just as it grew dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and that they should not open them until after the sabbath. Then I stationed some of my servants at the gates so that no load would enter on the sabbath day.
- Once or twice the traders and merchants of every kind of merchandise spent the night outside Jerusalem.

- 나는 그들을 꾸짖었다. "왜 너희는 성 앞에서 밤을 새우느냐? 또다시 그러면 잡아 들이리라." 그 후로 그들은 안식일에 나타나지 않았다.
- 나는 레위인들에게 목욕재계하고 와서 성문들을 지켜 안식일을 거룩하게 지키도록 하라고 일렀다. 나의 하느님이여, 저의 이런 일도 부디 잊지 말아주십시오. 그지없으신 사랑을 믿고 비오니, 이 몸 너그러이 보아주십시오.
- 그 때 나는 또 유다인과 아스돗, 암몬, 모압의 여인들 사이에서
- 태어난 아이들의 절반이 유다 말을 못하고 아스돗 말이나 다른 나라 말을 하고 있는 것을 알게 되었다.
- 나는 그들을 꾸짖고 욕하였다. 더러는 때리며 머리를 뽑고 하느님의 이름으로 맹세를 하게 하였다. "너희는 무슨 일이 있어도 다른 민족을 사위나 며느리 또는 아내로 맞아들이지 않겠다고 맹세하여라.

- Then I warned them and said to them, "Why do you spend the night in front of the wall? If you do so again, I will use force against you." From that time on they did not come on the sabbath.
- And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come as gatekeepers to sanctify the sabbath day For this also remember me, O my God, and have compassion on me according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness.
- In those days I also saw that the Jews had married women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab.
- As for their children, half spoke in the language of Ashdod, and none of them was able to speak the language of Judah, but the language of his own people.
- So I contended with them and cursed them and struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God, "You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take of their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.

- 이스라엘 왕 솔로몬이 죄를 지은 것도 이런 여인들 때문이 아니었더냐? 세상에 많은 민족이 있었지만 그만한 임금이 어디 있었느냐? 하느님께서 그를 사랑하시어 온 이스라엘의 임금으로 세워주셨지만, 그분도 다른 나라 여인들 때문에 죄를 지었다.
- 너희가 어찌하여 다른 나라 여인들과 사느냐? 이런 못할 일을 마구 저질러 우리 하느님께 거역하다니! 어떻게 이런 소문이 나게 할 수가 있느냐?"
- 대사제 엘랴십의 아들인 요야다의 한 아들이 호론 사람 산발랏의 사위가 되었다. 나는 그를 쫓아내었다.
- 나의 하느님이여, 저들을 잊지 마십시오. 사제직을 더럽힌 것들입니다. 사제와 레위인의 약속을 저버린 것들입니다.
- 다른 나라 사람들에게서 묻은 부정을 모두 씻게 한 다음, 나는 그들을 사제와 레위인으로 다시 세워 각기 일을 맡기고 제사를 거들게 하였다.

- "Did not Solomon king of Israel sin regarding these things? Yet among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel; nevertheless the foreign women caused even him to sin.
- "Do we then hear about you that you have committed all this great evil by acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?"
- Even one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite, so I drove him away from me.
- Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.
- Thus I purified them from everything foreign and appointed duties for the priests and the Levites, each in his task,

- 또 때를 정해 주어 장작을 바치게 하였고 맏물 곡식을 바치게 하였다. 나의 하느님이여, 이 몸 잊지 마시고 복을 내려주십시오.

- and I arranged for the supply of wood at appointed times and for the first fruits Remember me, O my God, for good.
