	예레미야 37:1-38:28 시드기야가 왕위에 오른 후, 애굽의 군대가 예루살렘에 진격해 오자 바벨론 군대가 일시적으로 철수하였다. 시드기야 왕은 이 상황을 바벨론으로부터 유다가 구원받는 절호의 기회로 보고 예레미야에게 기도를 요청했다. 그러나 예레미야는 다시 바벨론이 침공할 것이라고 예언했다. 이로 인해 예레미야는 구덩이에 갇히게 되었지만 아벳멜렉에 의해 구출받았다. 시드기야 왕은 비밀리에 예레미야를 만나 바벨론에 항복할 것을 권고받지만 예레미야의 경고를 듣지 않았다.

	시드기야와 예레미야(37:1-37:21)

요시야의 아들 시드기야가 여호야김의 아들 고니야의 뒤를 이어 왕이 되었으니 이는 바벨론의 느부갓네살 왕이 그를 유다 땅의 왕으로 삼음이었더라

그와 그의 신하와 그의 땅 백성이 여호와께서 선지자 예레미야에게 하신 말씀을 듣지 아니하니라

시드기야 왕이 셀레먀의 아들 여후갈과 마아세야의 아들 제사장 스바냐를 선지자 예레미야에게 보내 청하되 너는 우리를 위하여 우리 하나님 여호와께 기도하라 하였으니

그 때에 예레미야가 갇히지 아니하였으므로 백성 가운데 출입하는 중이었더라

바로의 군대가 애굽에서 나오매 예루살렘을 에워쌌던 갈대아인이 그 소문을 듣고 예루살렘에서 떠났더라

And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.

But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the LORD, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.

And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the LORD our God for us.

Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.

Then Pharaoh's army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

여호와의 말씀이 선지자 예레미야에게 임하여 이르시되

이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 너희를 보내어 내게 구하게 한 유다의 왕에게 아뢰라 너희를 도우려고 나왔던 바로의 군대는 자기 땅 애굽으로 돌아가겠고

갈대아인이 다시 와서 이 성을 쳐서 빼앗아 불사르리라

여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 너희는 스스로 속여 말하기를 갈대아인이 반드시 우리를 떠나리라 하지 말라 그들이 떠나지 아니하리라

가령 너희가 너희를 치는 갈대아인의 온 군대를 쳐서 그 중에 부상자만 남긴다 할지라도 그들이 각기 장막에서 일어나 이 성을 불사르리라

Then came the word of the LORD unto the prophet Jeremiah saying,

Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh's army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.

And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.

Thus saith the LORD; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.

For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

갈대아인의 군대가 바로의 군대를 두려워하여 예루살렘에서 떠나매

예레미야가 베냐민 땅에서 백성 가운데 분깃을 받으려고 예루살렘을 떠나 그리로 가려 하여

베냐민 문에 이른즉 하나냐의 손자요 셀레먀의 아들인 이리야라 이름하는 문지기의 우두머리가 선지자 예레미야를 붙잡아 이르되 네가 갈대아인에게 항복하려 하는도다

예레미야가 이르되 거짓이다 나는 갈대아인에게 항복하려 하지 아니하노라 이리야가 듣지 아니하고 예레미야를 잡아 고관들에게로 끌어 가매

고관들이 노여워하여 예레미야를 때려서 서기관 요나단의 집에 가두었으니 이는 그들이 이 집을 옥으로 삼았음이더라

And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,

Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.

And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.

Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.

Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

예레미야가 뚜껑 씌운 웅덩이에 들어간 지 여러 날 만에

시드기야 왕이 사람을 보내어 그를 이끌어내고 왕궁에서 그에게 비밀히 물어 이르되 여호와께로부터 받은 말씀이 있느냐 예레미야가 대답하되 있나이다 또 이르되 왕이 바벨론의 왕의 손에 넘겨지리이다

예레미야가 다시 시드기야 왕에게 이르되 내가 왕에게나 왕의 신하에게나 이 백성에게 무슨 죄를 범하였기에 나를 옥에 가두었나이까

바벨론의 왕이 와서 왕과 이 땅을 치지 아니하리라고 예언한 왕의 선지자들이 이제 어디 있나이까

내 주 왕이여 이제 청하건대 내게 들으시며 나의 탄원을 받으사 나를 서기관 요나단의 집으로 돌려보내지 마옵소서 내가 거기에서 죽을까 두려워하나이다

When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?

Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?

Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

이에 시드기야 왕이 명령하여 예레미야를 감옥 뜰에 두고 떡 만드는 자의 거리에서 매일 떡 한 개씩 그에게 주게 하매 성중에 떡이 떨어질 때까지 이르니라 예레미야가 감옥 뜰에 머무니라

Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

	살아난 예레미야(38:1-38:28)

맛단의 아들 스바댜와 바스훌의 아들 그다랴와 셀레먀의 아들 유갈과 말기야의 아들 바스훌이 예레미야가 모든 백성에게 이르는 말을 들은즉 이르기를

여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 이 성에 머무는 자는 칼과 기근과 전염병에 죽으리라 그러나 갈대아인에게 항복하는 자는 살리니 그는 노략물을 얻음 같이 자기의 목숨을 건지리라

여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 이 성이 반드시 바벨론의 왕의 군대의 손에 넘어가리니 그가 차지하리라 하셨다 하는지라

이에 그 고관들이 왕께 아뢰되 이 사람이 백성의 평안을 구하지 아니하고 재난을 구하오니 청하건대 이 사람을 죽이소서 그가 이같이 말하여 이 성에 남은 군사의 손과 모든 백성의 손을 약하게 하나이다

시드기야 왕이 이르되 보라 그가 너희 손 안에 있느니라 왕은 조금도 너희를 거스를 수 없느니라 하는지라

Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,

Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.

Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which shall take it.

Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.

그들이 예레미야를 끌어다가 감옥 뜰에 있는 왕의 아들 말기야의 구덩이에 던져 넣을 때에 예레미야를 줄로 달아내렸는데 그 구덩이에는 물이 없고 진창뿐이므로 예레미야가 진창 속에 빠졌더라

왕궁 내시 구스인 에벳멜렉이 그들이 예레미야를 구덩이에 던져 넣었음을 들으니라 그 때에 왕이 베냐민 문에 앉았더니

에벳멜렉이 왕궁에서 나와 왕께 아뢰어 이르되

내 주 왕이여 저 사람들이 선지자 예레미야에게 행한 모든 일은 악하니이다 성 중에 떡이 떨어졌거늘 그들이 그를 구덩이에 던져 넣었으니 그가 거기에서 굶어 죽으리이다 하니

왕이 구스 사람 에벳멜렉에게 명령하여 이르되 너는 여기서 삼십 명을 데리고 가서 선지자 예레미야가 죽기 전에 그를 구덩이에서 끌어내라

Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;

Ebedmelech went forth out of the king's house, and spake to the king saying,

My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.

Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

에벳멜렉이 사람들을 데리고 왕궁 곳간 밑 방에 들어가서 거기에서 헝겊과 낡은 옷을 가져다가 그것을 구덩이에 있는 예레미야에게 밧줄로 내리며

구스인 에벳멜렉이 예레미야에게 이르되 당신은 이 헝겊과 낡은 옷을 당신의 겨드랑이에 대고 줄을 그 아래에 대시오 예레미야가 그대로 하매

그들이 줄로 예레미야를 구덩이에서 끌어낸지라 예레미야가 시위대 뜰에 머무니라

시드기야 왕이 사람을 보내어 선지자 예레미야를 여호와의 성전 셋째 문으로 데려오게 하고 왕이 예레미야에게 이르되 내가 네게 한 가지 일을 물으리니 한 마디도 내게 숨기지 말라

예레미야가 시드기야에게 이르되 내가 이 일을 왕에게 아시게 하여도 왕이 결코 나를 죽이지 아니하시리이까 가령 내가 왕을 권한다 할지라도 왕이 듣지 아니하시리이다

So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

And Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.

Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me?

시드기야 왕이 비밀히 예레미야에게 맹세하여 이르되 우리에게 이 영혼을 지으신 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 내가 너를 죽이지도 아니하겠으며 네 생명을 찾는 그 사람들의 손에 넘기지도 아니하리라 하는지라

예레미야가 시드기야에게 이르되 만군의 하나님이신 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 네가 만일 바벨론의 왕의 고관들에게 항복하면 네 생명이 살겠고 이 성이 불사름을 당하지 아니하겠고 너와 네 가족이 살려니와

네가 만일 나가서 바벨론의 왕의 고관들에게 항복하지 아니하면 이 성이 갈대아인의 손에 넘어가리니 그들이 이 성을 불사를 것이며 너는 그들의 손을 벗어나지 못하리라 하셨나이다

시드기야 왕이 예레미야에게 이르되 나는 갈대아인에게 항복한 유다인을 두려워하노라 염려하건대 갈대아인이 나를 그들의 손에 넘기면 그들이 나를 조롱할까 하노라 하는지라

예레미야가 이르되 그 무리가 왕을 그들에게 넘기지 아니하리이다 원하옵나니 내가 왕에게 아뢴 바 여호와의 목소리에 순종하소서 그리하면 왕이 복을 받아 생명을 보전하시리이다

So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:

But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.

그러나 만일 항복하기를 거절하시면 여호와께서 내게 보이신 말씀대로 되리이다

보라 곧 유다 왕궁에 남아 있는 모든 여자가 바벨론 왕의 고관들에게로 끌려갈 것이요 그 여자들은 네게 말하기를 네 친구들이 너를 꾀어 이기고 네 발이 진흙에 빠짐을 보고 물러갔도다 하리라

네 아내들과 자녀는 갈대아인에게로 끌려가겠고 너는 그들의 손에서 벗어나지 못하고 바벨론 왕의 손에 잡히리라 또 네가 이 성읍으로 불사름을 당하게 하리라 하셨나이다

시드기야가 예레미야에게 이르되 너는 이 말을 어느 사람에게도 알리지 말라 그리하면 네가 죽지 아니하리라

만일 고관들이 내가 너와 말하였다 함을 듣고 와서 네게 말하기를 네가 왕에게 말씀한 것을 우리에게 전하라 우리에게 숨기지 말라 그리하면 우리가 너를 죽이지 아니하리라 또 왕이 네게 말씀한 것을 전하라 하거든

But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD hath shewed me:

And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.

So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.

Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:

그들에게 대답하되 내가 왕 앞에 간구하기를 나를 요나단의 집으로 되돌려 보내지 마소서 그리하여 거기서 죽지 않게 하옵소서 하였다 하라 하니라

모든 고관이 예레미야에게 와서 물으매 그가 왕이 명령한 모든 말대로 대답하였으므로 일이 탄로되지 아니하였고 그들은 그와 더불어 말하기를 그쳤더라

예레미야가 예루살렘이 함락되는 날까지 감옥 뜰에 머물렀더라

Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.

Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

	고니야( 37:1) 여호야긴

	음실(陰室, 37:16) 본래 ‘무덤’을 뜻하나, 여기서는 어둡고 더러운 지하 감옥을 가리킴
