예레미야 37:1-38:28

 시드기야가 왕위에 오른 후, 애굽의 군대가 예루살렘에 진격해 오자 바벨론 군대가 일시적으로 철수하였다. 시드기야 왕은 이 상황을 바벨론으로부터 유다가 구원받는 절호의 기회로 보고 예레미야에게 기도를 요청했다. 그러나 예레미야는 다시 바벨론이 침공할 것이라고 예언했다. 이로 인해 예레미야는 구덩이에 갇히게 되었지만 아벳멜렉에 의해 구출받았다. 시드기야 왕은 비밀리에 예레미야를 만나 바벨론에 항복할 것을 권고받지만 예레미야의 경고를 듣지 않았다.
  
  시드기야와 예레미야(37:1-37:21)    
 
  1. 바빌로니아의 느부갓네살 왕은 여호야김의 아들인 여호야긴 대신 요시야의 아들 시드기야를 유다 왕으로 세웠다.
  2. 그러나 왕과 그의 신하들과 모든 백성들은 내가 전한 여호와의 말씀에 귀를 기울이지 않았다.
  3. 시드기야왕은 셀레먀의 아들 여후갈과 마아세야의 아들인 제사장 스바냐를 나에게 보내 그들을 위해서 우리 하나님 여호와께 기도해 달라고 간청하였다.
  4. 그때 나는 아직 갇히지 않았으므로 백성들 가운데 자유롭게 다니고 있었다.
  5. 한편 예루살렘을 포위하고 있던 바빌로니아군은 바로의 군대가 이집트 국경을 넘어서 오고 있다는 말을 듣고 이집트군과 맞서 싸우기 위해 예루살렘을 떠났다.
  1. Zedekiah son of Josiah was made king of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim.
  2. Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention to the words the LORD had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
  3. King Zedekiah, however, sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: "Please pray to the LORD our God for us."
  4. Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.
  5. Pharaoh's army had marched out of Egypt, and when the Babylonians who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.
  1. 그때 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 그들에게 이렇게 일러 주라고 나에게 말씀하셨다. '너희를 보내 나에게 묻게 한 유다 왕에게 가서 말하라. 너희를 도우려고 나오는 바로의 군대는 자기 땅 이집트로 돌아갈 것이며
  2. (6절과 같음)
  3. 바빌로니아군이 다시 와서 이 성을 공격하고 점령하여 불사를 것이다.
  4. 너희는 자신을 속이고 바빌로니아군이 너희를 아주 떠났다고 생각하지 말아라. 그들은 떠나지 않을 것이다.
  5. 만일 너희가 바빌로니아의 전 군대를 무찔러 그들에게 살아 남은 자가 천막 안에 누워 있는 부상자밖에 없을지라도 그들이 일어나서 이 성을 잿더미로 만들어 버릴 것이다.'
  1. Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet:
  2. "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of me, 'Pharaoh's army, which has marched out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.
  3. Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.'
  4. "This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, 'The Babylonians will surely leave us.' They will not!
  5. Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn this city down."
  1. 바빌로니아군은 바로의 군대 때문에 예루살렘에서 철수하였다.
  2. 그래서 나는 우리 집안의 재산 중 나에게 돌아올 몫을 받으려고 예루살렘을 떠나 베냐민 땅으로 향하였다.
  3. 내가 베냐민 문에 이르렀을 때 하나냐의 손자이며 셀레먀의 아들인 문지기 대장 '이리야'라 하는 자가 나를 붙잡아 '네가 바빌로니아 사람들에게 넘어가려고 하는구나.' 하였다.
  4. 그때 내가 '그렇지 않소. 나는 바빌로니아 사람들에게 넘어가려는 것이 아니오.' 하였으나 이리야는 내 말을 듣지 않고 나를 잡아 대신들에게 끌고 갔다.
  5. 대신들은 나에게 마구 화를 내면서 나를 때리고 서기관 요나단의 집에 가두라고 지시했는데 이 집은 감옥으로 사용되고 있었다.
  1. After the Babylonian army had withdrawn from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army,
  2. Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property among the people there.
  3. But when he reached the Benjamin Gate, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, "You are deserting to the Babylonians!"
  4. "That's not true!" Jeremiah said. "I am not deserting to the Babylonians." But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.
  5. They were angry with Jeremiah and had him beaten and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.
  1. 내가 지하 감방에 갇힌 지 여러 날이 지난 후에
  2. 시드기야왕이 사람을 보내 나를 이끌어내고 왕궁으로 불러 여호와께 받은 말씀이 있느냐고 조용히 물었다. 그래서 나는 있다고 대답하며 '왕은 바빌로니아 왕의 손에 넘어가게 될 것입니다.' 하고 덧붙였다.
  3. 그리고서 나는 다시 시드기야왕에게 말하였다. '내가 왕과 왕의 신하들과 이 백성에게 무슨 죄를 지었다고 나를 감옥에 가두셨습니까?
  4. 바빌로니아 왕이 왕과 이 땅을 치지 않을 것이라고 예언한 왕의 예언자들은 지금 어디 있습니까?
  5. 내 주 왕이시여, 제발 부탁합니다. 나를 서기관 요나단의 집에 있는 감옥으로 돌려보내지 마십시오. 그렇지 않으면 내가 거기서 죽게 될지도 모릅니다.'
  1. Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time.
  2. Then King Zedekiah sent for him and had him brought to the palace, where he asked him privately, "Is there any word from the LORD ?" "Yes," Jeremiah replied, "you will be handed over to the king of Babylon."
  3. Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "What crime have I committed against you or your officials or this people, that you have put me in prison?
  4. Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, 'The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land'?
  5. But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there."
  1. 그러자 시드기야왕은 나를 지하 감옥에 돌려보내지 말고 궁중 감옥에 두어 '빵집 거리'에서 매일 빵 한 개씩 갖다 주라고 명령하였다. 그래서 나는 성안에 빵이 다 떨어질 때까지 그 빵을 얻어먹고 그 곳에 머물러 있었다.
  1. King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.
 
  살아난 예레미야(38:1-38:28)    
 
  1. 맛단의 아들 스바댜와 바스훌의 아들 그달랴와 셀레먀의 아들 유갈과 말기야의 아들 바스훌이 내가 모든 백성에게 하는 말을 들었는데 그때 내가 한 말은 다음과 같다. '이것은 여호와의 말씀입니다. 이 성에 머무는 자는 누구든지 전쟁과 굶주림과 질병으로 죽을 것이다. 그러나 바빌로니아 사람에게 항복하는 자는 누구든지 살 것이며 적어도 목숨만은 건지게 될 것이다.
  2. (1절과 같음)
  3. 그리고 예루살렘은 반드시 바빌로니아 왕에게 정복당할 것이다.'
  4. 그러자 대신들이 왕에게 가서 이렇게 말하였다. '이 사람을 죽여야 합니다. 그가 이 성에 남아 있는 병사들과 모든 사람들의 사기를 저하시키고 있습니다. 그는 이 백성을 도우려고 하는 것이 아니라 오히려 이 백성을 해치려고 합니다.'
  5. 그때 시드기야왕은 '그가 너희 수중에 있으니 너희 마음대로 하여라. 나는 너희를 막을 수가 없다.' 하고 대답하였다.
  1. Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jehucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah was telling all the people when he said,
  2. "This is what the LORD says: 'Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague, but whoever goes over to the Babylonians will live. He will escape with his life; he will live.'
  3. And this is what the LORD says: 'This city will certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.' "
  4. Then the officials said to the king, "This man should be put to death. He is discouraging the soldiers who are left in this city, as well as all the people, by the things he is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their ruin."
  5. "He is in your hands," King Zedekiah answered. "The king can do nothing to oppose you."
  1. 그러자 그들은 나를 끌고 가서 왕자 말기야의 우물에 밧줄로 달아내렸다. 그 우물은 궁전 경비대 뜰에 있는 것으로 거기에는 물이 없고 진흙탕뿐이었다. 그래서 나는 그 진흙탕에 빠지고 말았다.
  2. 그러나 궁중 내시 이디오피아 사람 에벳-멜렉은 대신들이 나를 우물에 던져 넣었다는 말을 듣고 왕이 베냐민 문에 앉아 있을 때
  3. 왕에게 가서 이렇게 말하였다.
  4. '폐하, 저 사람들이 예언자 예레미야에게 행한 일은 모두 악한 짓입니다. 그들이 예레미야를 우물에 던져 넣었습니다. 성 안에 빵이 다 떨어졌으니 그가 거기서 굶어 죽게 될 것입니다.'
  5. 그때 왕은 이디오피아 사람 에벳-멜렉에게 '너는 30명을 데리고 가서 예언자 예레미야가 죽기 전에 그를 우물에서 끌어내어라.' 하고 명령하였다.
  1. So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king's son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.
  2. But Ebed-Melech, a Cushite, an official in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,
  3. Ebed-Melech went out of the palace and said to him,
  4. "My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city."
  5. Then the king commanded Ebed-Melech the Cushite, "Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies."
  1. 에벳-멜렉은 사람들을 데리고 궁전 창고로 가서 헝겊과 낡은 옷을 가져다가 밧줄과 함께 그것을 우물에 있는 나에게 내려 주면서
  2. '당신은 이 헝겊과 낡은 옷을 겨드랑이에 대고 밧줄을 그 위에 대시오.' 하였다. 내가 그대로 하자
  3. 그들은 밧줄로 나를 그 우물에서 끌어올렸다. 그래서 나는 다시 궁중 감옥에 갇히게 되었다.
  4. 어느 날 시드기야왕은 나를 성전의 세째 문으로 불러다가 '내가 너에게 한 가지 물어 볼 말이 있다. 나에게 조금도 숨기지 말아라.' 하였다.
  5. 그때 나는 시드기야왕에게 '내가 사실대로 말한다면 분명히 나를 죽이지 않으시겠습니까? 내가 왕에게 조언을 한다고 해도 왕은 내 말을 듣지 않을 것입니다.' 하고 대답하였다.
  1. So Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.
  2. Ebed-Melech the Cushite said to Jeremiah, "Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes." Jeremiah did so,
  3. and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.
  4. Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and had him brought to the third entrance to the temple of the LORD. "I am going to ask you something," the king said to Jeremiah. "Do not hide anything from me."
  5. Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "If I give you an answer, will you not kill me? Even if I did give you counsel, you would not listen to me."
  1. 그러자 시드기야왕은 몰래 나에게 이런 약속을 하였다. '우리에게 생명을 주신 여호와께서 살아 계시는 한 나는 너를 죽이지 않고 네 생명을 노리는 자들에게 너를 넘겨 주지도 않겠다.'
  2. 전능하신 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 왕에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. '네가 만일 바빌로니아 왕의 대신들에게 항복하면 네가 죽지 않고 이 성도 불타지 않을 것이며 네 가족도 함께 살게 될 것이다.
  3. 그러나 네가 만일 그들에게 항복하지 않으면 이 성은 바빌로니아 사람들에게 넘어갈 것이다. 그들이 이 성에 불을 지를 것이며 너는 그들의 손에서 벗어나지 못할 것이다.'
  4. '나는 바빌로니아 사람들에게 넘어간 유대인이 두렵다 바빌로니아 사람들이 나를 그들에게 넘겨 주어 그들이 나를 괴롭힐지도 모른다.'
  5. '왕은 그들의 손에 넘어가지 않을 것입니다. 내가 왕에게 말한 대로 왕은 여호와께 순종하십시오. 그러면 왕에게는 아무 일이 없을 것이며 왕은 죽지 않고 살 것입니다.
  1. But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly to Jeremiah: "As surely as the LORD lives, who has given us breath, I will neither kill you nor hand you over to those who are seeking your life."
  2. Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "This is what the LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'If you surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live.
  3. But if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be handed over to the Babylonians and they will burn it down; you yourself will not escape from their hands.' "
  4. King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Babylonians, for the Babylonians may hand me over to them and they will mistreat me."
  5. "They will not hand you over," Jeremiah replied. "Obey the LORD by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you, and your life will be spared.
  1. 그러나 만일 왕이 항복하기를 거절하신다면 여호와께서 나에게 말씀하신 대로 될 것입니다. 여호와께서는 나에게 이런 말씀을 하셨습니다.
  2. 유다 왕궁에 남아 있는 모든 여자들이 바빌로니아 왕의 대신들에게 끌려갈 것이며 그들은 가면서 이렇게 말할 것이다. '왕의 친구들이 그를 꾀어내어 짓누르고 그 발이 진흙탕 속에 빠지자 그들은 왕을 버리고 떠나 버렸다.
  3. 네 아내들과 자녀들은 바빌로니아 사람들에게 끌려갈 것이며 너도 그들의 손에서 벗어나지 못하고 바빌로니아 왕에게 사로잡힐 것이다. 그리고 이 성은 불에 타서 잿더미가 되고 말 것이다.'
  4. 그러자 시드기야왕이 나에게 말하였다. '너는 이 말을 아무에게도 알리지 말아라. 그러면 네가 죽지 않을 것이다.
  5. 만일 대신들이 내가 너와 말했다는 소문을 듣고 너에게 와서 '네가 왕과 말한 것을 조금도 숨기지 말고 다 우리에게 말하라. 그러면 우리가 너를 죽이지 않겠다.' 하거든
  1. But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the LORD has revealed to me:
  2. All the women left in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon. Those women will say to you: " 'They misled you and overcame you-- those trusted friends of yours. Your feet are sunk in the mud; your friends have deserted you.'
  3. "All your wives and children will be brought out to the Babylonians. You yourself will not escape from their hands but will be captured by the king of Babylon; and this city will be burned down."
  4. Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "Do not let anyone know about this conversation, or you may die.
  5. If the officials hear that I talked with you, and they come to you and say, 'Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us or we will kill you,'
  1. 너는 그들에게 이렇게 대답하라. '나는 왕에게 나를 요나단의 집에 있는 감옥으로 다시 보내 거기서 죽게 하지 말아 달라고 간청했습니다.'
  2. 모든 대신들이 나에게 와서 물어 보기에 나는 왕이 나에게 일러 준 그대로 말하였다. 내가 왕과 대화한 것을 아무도 들은 사람이 없기 때문에 그들은 더 이상 묻지 않았다.
  3. 그래서 나는 예루살렘이 함락되는 날까지 궁중 감옥에 갇혀 있었다.
  1. then tell them, 'I was pleading with the king not to send me back to Jonathan's house to die there.' "
  2. All the officials did come to Jeremiah and question him, and he told them everything the king had ordered him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had heard his conversation with the king.
  3. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured.
 
  고니야( 37:1)  여호야긴  
  음실(陰室, 37:16)  본래 ‘무덤’을 뜻하나, 여기서는 어둡고 더러운 지하 감옥을 가리킴
