	창세기 42:1-43:15 가나안 땅에 흉년이 들어 애굽에 곡물을 사러 온 요셉의 형들은 요셉과 첫 대면을 하게 되었다. 요셉은 형들을 시험해 보기 위해 형들을 정탐꾼으로 몰아 그들 중 한 사람을 인질로 잡아 두고 베냐민을 데리고 다시 오라고 명령하였다. 야곱은 베냐민을 보내려 하지 않았으나 유다가 자신을 담보로 야곱을 설득하였다. 결국 야곱은 전능하신 하나님을 의지하고 베냐민을 보내기로 결단을 내렸다.

	요셉과 형들의 1차 대면(42:1-42:25)

이때 야곱은 이집트에 곡식이 있다는 말을 듣고 자기 아들들에게 말하였다. '어째서 너희는 서로 쳐다만 보고 있느냐?

이집트에는 곡식이 있다는 말을 들었다. 굶어 죽지 않으려면 그리로 가서 곡식을 사오너라'

그래서 요셉의 열 형제들은 곡식을 사려고 이집트로 떠났다.

그러나 야곱은 요셉의 동생 베냐민을 그들과 함께 보내지 않았다. 이것은 베냐민에게 어떤 일이 일어날지도 모른다는 두려움 때문이었다.

가나안 땅에도 기근이 밀어닥쳤으므로 야곱의 아들들은 곡식을 사러 가는 다른 사람들 틈에 끼어 이집트에 도착하였다.

Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, "Why are you staring at one another?"

He said, "Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from that place, so that we may live and not die."

Then ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain from Egypt.

But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, "I am afraid that harm may befall him."

So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, for the famine was in the land of Canaan also.

이때 요셉은 나라의 총리가 되어 모든 백성에게 곡식을 팔고 있었다. 그의 형들이 그 앞에 와서 땅에 엎드려 절하자

요셉은 그들을 보는 순간 자기 형들인 것을 알았으나 모르는 척하고 큰소리로 '너희는 어디서 왔느냐?' 하고 물었다. 이때 그들은 '곡식을 사려고 가나안 땅에서 왔습니다' 하고 대답하였다.

요셉은 자기 형들을 알아보았으나 그들은 요셉을 알아보지 못하였다.

요셉은 오래 전에 그들에 대하여 꾼 꿈을 생각하며 이렇게 말하였다. '너희는 간첩이구나! 너희는 우리 나라의 취약 지역이 어디인지 알아보려고 온 자들이 틀림없다'

'아닙니다. 우리는 곡식을 사려고 왔을 뿐입니다.

Now Joseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold to all the people of the land And Joseph's brothers came and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

When Joseph saw his brothers he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and spoke to them harshly. And he said to them, "Where have you come from?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy food."

But Joseph had recognized his brothers, although they did not recognize him.

Joseph remembered the dreams which he had about them, and said to them, "You are spies; you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land."

Then they said to him, "No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.

우리는 다 한 형제로서 간첩이 아니라 모두 건실한 사람들입니다'

'아니다 너희는 우리 나라의 취약 지구를 탐색하러 왔어!'

'우리는 모두 열 두 형제로서 가나안 땅에 사는 한 사람의 아들들입니다 막내 아들은 지금 아버지와 함께 있고 하나는 없어졌습니다'

'내가 이미 말한 대로 너희는 간첩이다.

너희는 간첩이 아니라는 것을 증명해야 한다. 내가 바로의 이름으로 맹세하지만 너희 막내 동생을 여기에 데려 오지 않으면 너희가 절대로 이 곳을 떠나지 못할 것이다.

"We are all sons of one man; we are honest men, your servants are not spies."

Yet he said to them, "No, but you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land!"

But they said, "Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no longer alive."

Joseph said to them, "It is as I said to you, you are spies;

by this you will be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here!

너희 중 하나가 가서 그를 데려오너라. 너희 말이 입증될 때까지 나머지는 감옥에 가둬 두겠다. 내가 목숨을 걸고 맹세하지만 너희가 만일 그를 데려오지 않으면 너희는 분명히 간첩이다'

그리고서 요셉은 그들을 3일 동안 가둬 두었다.

그들이 갇힌 지 3일 만에 요셉이 그들에게 말하였다. '나는 하나님을 두려워하는 사람이다. 내가 시키는 대로하면 너희 목숨만은 살려 주겠다

만일 너희가 건실한 사람들이라면 너희 형제 중 한 사람만 감옥에 갇혀 있고 나머지는 곡식을 가지고 가서 굶주리고 있는 너희 가족들에게 갔다 주고

너희 막내 동생을 나에게 데려오너라. 그러면 너희가 한 말이 입증되어 너희가 죽지 않을 것이다' 그래서 그들은 그렇게 하기로 합의하고

"Send one of you that he may get your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies."

So he put them all together in prison for three days.

Now Joseph said to them on the third day, "Do this and live, for I fear God:

if you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined in your prison; but as for the rest of you, go, carry grain for the famine of your households,

and bring your youngest brother to me, so your words may be verified, and you will not die." And they did so.

서로 이렇게 말하였다. '우리가 동생에게 한 일로 지금 벌을 받고 있다. 그가 살려 달라고 애걸할 때 우리가 그의 괴로움을 보고도 듣지 않았으니 우리가 이런 괴로움을 당하게 되었다.'

그때 르우벤이 그들에게 대답하였다. '내가 그 아이를 해하지 말라고 하지 않았느냐? 그러나 너희는 내 말을 듣지 않았다. 그러므로 우리가 지금 그 댓가를 치르고 있는 것이다'

요셉이 통역관을 통해 말했으므로 그들은 요셉이 자기들의 말을 알아듣는 줄을 몰랐다.

요셉은 잠시 그들을 떠났다가 울고서 다시 돌아와 그들과 말하는 중에 시므온을 끌어내어 그들 앞에서 묶었다.

그리고서 요셉은 명령을 내려 그들의 자루에 곡식을 채우게 하고 각 사람의 돈은 그 자루에 도로 넣게 하였으며 길을 가는 도중에 먹을 음식도 그들에게 주도록 하였다.

Then they said to one another, "Truly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen; therefore this distress has come upon us."

Reuben answered them, saying, "Did I not tell you, 'Do not sin against the boy'; and you would not listen? Now comes the reckoning for his blood."

They did not know, however, that Joseph understood, for there was an interpreter between them.

He turned away from them and wept But when he returned to them and spoke to them, he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.

Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain and to restore every man's money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. And thus it was done for them.

	야곱의 결단(42:26-43:15)

그들은 곡식을 나귀에 싣고 떠났는데

하룻밤 쉬어 가려고 머문 곳에서 한 사람이 나귀에게 먹이를 주려고 자루를 풀어 보니 자루 아구에 자기 돈이 들어 있었다.

그가 형제들에게 '내 돈을 도로 돌려주었다. 이것봐, 내 자루 속에 돈이 있다' 하자 그들은 두려워 떨며 서로 쳐다보고 '어째서 하나님이 우리에게 이런 일을 하셨는가?' 하고 한탄하였다.

그들은 가나안 땅에 돌아와 자기들의 아버지 야곱에게 그동안에 있었던 모든 일을 보고하며 이렇게 말하였다.

'그 나라를 다스리는 사람이 우리에게 엄하게 말하며 우리를 간첩으로 취급하였습니다

So they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed from there.

As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money; and behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.

Then he said to his brothers, "My money has been returned, and behold, it is even in my sack." And their hearts sank, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, "What is this that God has done to us?"

When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying,

"The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly with us, and took us for spies of the country.

그래서 우리는 간첩이 아니라 건실한 사람들이며

모두 열 두 형제로서 한 아버지의 아들들인데 하나는 없어지고 막내는 아버지와 함께 가나안 땅에 있다고 말해 주었습니다.

그랬더니 그 사람은 우리가 건실한 사람임을 입증하기 위해서라도 우리 가운데 한 사람이 그와 함께 그 곳에 남아 있고 나머지는 곡식을 가지고 가서 굶주리는 가족들에게 갖다 주고

막내 동생을 데려오라고 하였습니다. 그렇게만 하면 우리가 간첩이 아니라 건실한 사람이라는 것을 알고 우리 동생을 돌려보낸다고 했으며 또 우리는 그 땅에서 무역도 할 수 있다고 했습니다'

그리고서 그들이 각자 자루를 쏟아 보니 그 자루 속에 자기들의 돈 주머니가 들어 있었다. 그들과 그들의 아버지는 그 돈 주머니를 보고 두려워하지 않을 수 없었다.

"But we said to him, 'We are honest men; we are not spies.

'We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no longer alive, and the youngest is with our father today in the land of Canaan.'

"The man, the lord of the land, said to us, 'By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me and take grain for the famine of your households, and go.

'But bring your youngest brother to me that I may know that you are not spies, but honest men. I will give your brother to you, and you may trade in the land.'"

Now it came about as they were emptying their sacks, that behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were dismayed.

이때 야곱이 그들에게 말하였다. '너희가 내 자식들을 잃게 하는구나! 요셉도 없어지고 시므온도 없어졌는데 너희가 이제 베냐민마저 빼앗아 가려고 하니 모든 일이 다 나를 괴롭게만 하는구나'

그러자 르우벤이 아버지에게 '내가 만일 베냐민을 아버지에게 데려오지 않으면 나의 두 아들을 죽여도 좋습니다. 그를 나에게 맡기십시오. 내가 책임지고 데리고 돌아오겠습니다' 하였다.

그러나 야곱이 '내 아들은 너희와 함께 내려가지 못한다. 그의 형은 죽었고 그만 남았는데 만일 너희가 그를 데리고 가는 도중에 그에게 무슨 일이라도 일어난다면 너희는 백발이 된 나를 슬픔 가운데서 무덤으로 내려보내는 자들이 될 것이다' 하였다.

Their father Jacob said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me."

Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, "You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my care, and I will return him to you."

But Jacob said, "My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left If harm should befall him on the journey you are taking, then you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow."

가나안 땅에 기근이 더욱 심각해지자

그들이 이집트에서 가져온 식량도 다 떨어졌다. 그래서 야곱이 아들들에게 '가서 양식을 좀더 사오너라' 하자

유다가 이렇게 대답하였다. '그 사람은 우리가 동생을 데려가지 않으면 다시는 그를 보지 못할 것이라고 엄하게 경고하였습니다

아버지께서 동생을 우리와 함께 보내 주셔야 우리가 내려가서 양식을 사올 수 있습니다.

그는 우리가 동생을 데려가지 않으면 자기를 보지 못할 것이다고 말했습니다. 만일 아버지께서 그를 보내 주시지 않는다면 우리는 내려가지 않겠습니다'

Now the famine was severe in the land.

So it came about when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, "Go back, buy us a little food."

Judah spoke to him, however, saying, "The man solemnly warned us, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.'

"If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.

"But if you do not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, 'You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.'"

이때 야곱이 '너희가 어째서 그 사람에게 다른 동생이 있냐고 말하여 나를 이처럼 괴롭히느냐?' 하자

그들이 이렇게 대답하였다. '그 사람이 우리와 우리 가족에 대하여 자세히 묻고 너희 아버지가 지금도 살아 있느냐? 너희에게 또 다른 동생이 있느냐? 하기에 우리는 그저 그의 질문이 대답했을 뿐입니다. 그가 우리 동생을 데려오라고 말할 줄을 우리가 어떻게 알았겠습니까?'

그때 유다가 아버지에게 말하였다. '저 아이를 나와 함께 보내 주십시오. 그러면 우리가 즉시 떠나겠습니다. 그렇게 해야만 우리와 아버지와 우리 자녀들이 죽지 않고 살 수 있습니다

내가 목숨을 걸고 그의 안전을 보장합니다. 그에 대한 책임은 내가 지겠습니다. 내가 만일 무사히 그를 데리고 와서 아버지 앞에 두지 않으면 내가 평생 동안 그 피의 댓가를 치르겠습니다.

우리가 지체하지 않았더라면 벌써 두 번이나 갔다 왔을 것입니다'

Then Israel said, "Why did you treat me so badly by telling the man whether you still had another brother?"

But they said, "The man questioned particularly about us and our relatives, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?' So we answered his questions. Could we possibly know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down'?"

Judah said to his father Israel, "Send the lad with me and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, we as well as you and our little ones.

"I myself will be surety for him; you may hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame before you forever.

"For if we had not delayed, surely by now we could have returned twice."

그러자 그들의 아버지 야곱이 말하였다 '정 그렇다면 이렇게 하여라. 너희는 이 땅의 제일 좋은 토산물인 유향과 꿀과 향품과 몰약과 비자와 편도를 조금 가지고 가서 그 사람에게 선물로 주어라.

그리고 그 사람이 너희 자루 아구에 돈을 도로 넣어 주었으니 너희는 그 돈의 두 배를 가지고 가거라. 아마 착오가 있었을 것이다

너희 동생도 그 사람에게 즉시 데리고 가거라.

전능하신 하나님이 그 사람 앞에서 너희에게 자비를 베풀어 그가 시므온과 베냐민을 돌려보내기를 원할 뿐이다. 내가 자식을 잃게 되어도 하는 수 없다'

그래서 그들은 선물과 전에 가지고 간 돈의 두 배를 가지고 베냐민과 함께 이집트로 내려갔다. 그들이 요셉 앞에 서자

Then their father Israel said to them, "If it must be so, then do this: take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and carry down to the man as a present, a little balm and a little honey, aromatic gum and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.

"Take double the money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was a mistake.

"Take your brother also, and arise, return to the man;

and may God Almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release to you your other brother and Benjamin And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved."

So the men took this present, and they took double the money in their hand, and Benjamin; then they arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
