	민수기 20:1-21:35 출애굽 제40년 정월, 이스라엘 백성은 가데스 바네아에 모였으나 물이 없어 하나님을 원망하였다. 이에 하나님께서는 모세를 통해 반석에서 물을 나게 하셨지만, 하나님의 말씀대로 행하지 않은 실수를 범한 모세는 가나안에 들어가는 축복을 잃게 되었다. 아론은 호르 산에서 죽고 그의 아들 엘르아살이 대제사장을 계승하였다. 그 후 이스라엘은 또다시 원망 불평하여 불뱀에 물려 죽는 벌을 받기도 했지만, 이방 민족들을 격퇴하면서 가나안 땅을 향해 계속 진군하였다.

	므리바 사건(20:1-20:29)

이스라엘 백성은 1월에 진 광야에 도착하여 가데스에서 진을 쳤으며 거기서 미리암이 죽어 장사하였다.

그 곳에는 물이 없었기 때문에 백성들이 모세와 아론에게 몰려와

이렇게 항의하였다. '여호와께서 우리 형제들을 죽이실 때 우리가 함께 죽지 못한 것이 한스럽소!

어째서 당신들이 우리를 이 광야로 끌고 와서 우리 짐승들과 함께 우리를 죽이려 하시오?

무엇 때문에 당신들은 우리를 이집트에서 끌어내어 아무것도 없는 이 황무지로 데려왔소. 이 곳에는 곡식도 없고 무화과도 없고 포도도 없고 석류도 없고 심지어 마실 물도 없지 않소!'

Then the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came to the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people stayed at Kadesh. Now Miriam died there and was buried there.

There was no water for the congregation, and they assembled themselves against Moses and Aaron.

The people thus contended with Moses and spoke, saying, "If only we had perished when our brothers perished before the LORD!

"Why then have you brought the LORD'S assembly into this wilderness, for us and our beasts to die here?

"Why have you made us come up from Egypt, to bring us in to this wretched place? It is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, nor is there water to drink."

모세와 아론이 그들을 떠나 성막 입구로 가서 여호와 앞에 엎드리자 여호와께서 영광의 광채로 그들에게 나타나셔서

모세에게 말씀하셨다.

'너는 네 지팡이를 가지고 네 형 아론과 함께 백성을 모으고 그들 앞에서 바위를 향해 물을 내라고 말하라. 너는 그 바위에서 물을 나오게 하여 백성과 모든 짐승이 마시게 하라.'

그래서 모세는 여호와께서 명령하신 대로 여호와 앞에 두었던 지팡이를 가져와

아론과 함께 백성을 그 바위 앞에 모아 놓고 '이 반역자들이여, 우리가 당신들을 위해 이 바위에서 물을 내야 하겠소?' 하며

Then Moses and Aaron came in from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to them;

and the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

"Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink."

So Moses took the rod from before the LORD, just as He had commanded him;

and Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock. And he said to them, "Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?"

지팡이를 들어 바위를 두 번 쳤다. 그러자 물이 분수처럼 솟구쳐나와 백성과 그들의 짐승이 다 그 물을 마셨다.

그러나 여호와께서 모세와 아론에게 '너희가 나를 믿지 않고 이스라엘 백성들 앞에서 나를 거룩한 자로 높이지 않았으므로 너희는 그들을 인도하여 내가 준 땅으로 들어가지 못할 것이다!' 하고 말씀하셨다.

여기서 이스라엘 백성이 여호와와 다투었으므로 이 곳 물을 '므리바'물이라 하였다. 그리고 여호와께서는 자신이 거룩한 분임을 그들에게 보여 주셨다.

모세는 가데스에서 에돔 왕에게 사람을 보내 이렇게 말하였다. '우리는 당신의 친척 이스라엘의 후손입니다. 우리가 겪은 고생을 들어서 잘 알고 있겠지만

우리 조상들이 이집트로 내려갔기 때문에 우리가 거기서 오랫동안 살게 되었습니다. 그런데 이집트 사람들이 우리 조상들과 우리를 학대하므로

Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank.

But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."

Those were the waters of Meribah, because the sons of Israel contended with the LORD, and He proved Himself holy among them.

From Kadesh Moses then sent messengers to the king of Edom: "Thus your brother Israel has said, 'You know all the hardship that has befallen us;

that our fathers went down to Egypt, and we stayed in Egypt a long time, and the Egyptians treated us and our fathers badly.

우리가 여호와께 부르짖었더니 우리의 부르짖음을 들으시고 천사를 보내 우리를 이집트에서 인도해 내셨습니다. 그래서 지금 우리는 당신 영토의 경계 지역인 가데스에 있습니다.

우리가 당신의 땅을 통과할 수 있도록 허락해 주십시오. 우리가 밭이나 포도원으로 통과하지 않고 우물물도 마시지 않으며 큰 길로만 통과하여 왕의 땅을 다 지나갈 때까지 그 길에서 이탈하지 않겠습니다.'

그러나 에돔 왕은 '우리 땅을 통과하지 못한다. 네가 만일 내 땅에 발을 들여 놓으면 내가 나가서 칼로 너를 치겠다.' 하고 대답하였다.

그래서 이스라엘 사람들이 '우리가 큰 길로만 통과하겠습니다. 만일 우리나 우리 짐승이 왕의 나라에 있는 물을 마시면 우리가 그 값을 다 치르겠습니다. 다만 우리가 원하는 것은 왕의 땅을 통과하는 것뿐입니다.' 하였으나

에돔 왕은 '통과하지 못한다.' 하고 거절하였다. 그리고서 그가 많은 군대를 거느리고 국경 지대로 나와

'But when we cried out to the LORD, He heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out from Egypt; now behold, we are at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.

'Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or through vineyard; we will not even drink water from a well. We will go along the king's highway, not turning to the right or left, until we pass through your territory.'"

Edom, however, said to him, "You shall not pass through us, or I will come out with the sword against you."

Again, the sons of Israel said to him, "We will go up by the highway, and if I and my livestock do drink any of your water, then I will pay its price. Let me only pass through on my feet, nothing else."

But he said, "You shall not pass through." And Edom came out against him with a heavy force and with a strong hand.

이스라엘 백성이 그리로 통과하지 못하게 하였으므로 그들은 하는 수 없이 거기서 발길을 돌렸다.

이스라엘 백성은 가데스를 출발하여 에돔 국경 지대인 호르산에 도착하였다. 거기서 여호와께서는 모세와 아론에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다.

'아론은 내가 이스라엘 백성에게 준 땅에 들어가지 못하고 죽게 될 것이다. 이것은 너희 두 사람이 므리바에서 내 명령을 거역하였기 때문이다.

모세 너는 아론과 그의 아들 엘르아살을 데리고 호르산으로 올라가거라.

Thus Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through his territory; so Israel turned away from him.

Now when they set out from Kadesh, the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor.

Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor by the border of the land of Edom, saying,

"Aaron will be gathered to his people; for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the sons of Israel, because you rebelled against My command at the waters of Meribah.

"Take Aaron and his son Eleazar and bring them up to Mount Hor;

그리고 거기서 아론의 제사장복을 벗겨 그의 아들 엘르아살에게 입혀라. 아론은 거기서 죽게 될 것이다.'

그래서 모세는 여호와께서 명령하신 대로 모든 백성이 지켜보는 가운데 그들을 데리고 호르산으로 올라갔다.

모세가 아론의 옷을 벗겨 그의 아들 엘르아살에게 입힌 후에 아론은 산꼭대기에서 죽었고 모세와 엘르아살은 그 산에서 내려왔다

모든 이스라엘 백성은 아론이 죽었다는 말을 듣고 30일 동안 그의 죽음을 슬퍼하였다.

and strip Aaron of his garments and put them on his son Eleazar. So Aaron will be gathered to his people, and will die there."

So Moses did just as the LORD had commanded, and they went up to Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.

After Moses had stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on his son Eleazar, Aaron died there on the mountain top. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.

When all the congregation saw that Aaron had died, all the house of Israel wept for Aaron thirty days.

	놋뱀 사건(21:1-21:35)

가나안 남쪽 지방에 사는 아랏 왕은 이스라엘 백성이 아다림 길로 자기들에게 접근해 온다는 말을 듣고 그들을 공격하여 그들 가운데 몇 사람을 생포하였다.

그때 이스라엘 백성이 '만일 주께서 아랏 왕과 그의 백성을 정복하도록 도와 주신다면 우리가 그들과 그들의 성들을 완전히 섬멸해 버리겠습니다.' 하고 여호와께 서약하였다.

여호와께서는 그들의 서약을 들으시고 가나안 사람들을 정복할 수 있도록 그들을 도와 주셨다. 그래서 이스라엘 백성은 가나안 사람들과 그 성들을 완전히 소탕해 버렸는데 그후로 그 곳을 '호르마'라고 불렀다.

이스라엘 백성은 에돔 땅을 돌아가려고 호르산을 떠나 홍해로 가는 길을 따라갔다. 그런데 길을 돌아가는 고생을 참지 못해

그들은 하나님과 모세를 원망하며 '왜 우리를 이집트에서 끌어내어 이 광야에서 죽이려 하시오? 여기는 먹을 것도 없고 마실 물도 없지 않소? 이제 이 지겨운 만나도 신물이 나서 못 먹겠소!' 하고 모세에게 불평하였다.

When the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, then he fought against Israel and took some of them captive.

So Israel made a vow to the LORD and said, "If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities."

The LORD heard the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites; then they utterly destroyed them and their cities. Thus the name of the place was called Hormah.

Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the people became impatient because of the journey.

The people spoke against God and Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this miserable food."

그때 여호와께서 그들 가운데 독사를 보내셨다. 그래서 많은 사람들이 독사에 물려 죽었다.

그러자 사람들이 모세에게 와서 '우리가 하나님과 당신을 원망하여 죄를 지었습니다. 제발 여호와께 기도하여 이 뱀들을 없애 주십시오.' 하고 애걸하였다. 모세가 그들을 위해 기도하자

여호와께서 모세에게 '놋뱀을 만들어 장대에 매달아 뱀에 물린 자마다 그것을 보고 살게 하라.' 하고 말씀하셨다.

그래서 모세는 놋뱀을 만들어 장대에 매달아 두었는데 뱀에 물린 자마다 그 놋뱀을 쳐다보고 살아났다.

이스라엘 백성은 그 곳을 떠나 오봇에 가서 진을 쳤고

The LORD sent fiery serpents among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.

So the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD and you; intercede with the LORD, that He may remove the serpents from us." And Moses interceded for the people.

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live."

And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.

Now the sons of Israel moved out and camped in Oboth.

다시 오봇을 떠나 모압 동쪽 광야에 있는 이예-아바림이 진을 쳤으며

또 거기서 출발하여 세렛 골짜기로 가서 진을 쳤다.

그리고 그들은 다시 거기서 떠나 아모리 땅에서 뻗어 나온 광야의 아르논강 건너편에 진을 쳤다. 아르논강은 모압 땅과 아모리인의 땅 사이에 있는 모압의 경계선이었다.

그래서 여호와의 전쟁기에는 이렇게 적혀 있다. '수바의 와헵과 그 골짜기들, 아르논과 그 골짜기의 비탈은 아르 지방으로 뻗어 있고 모압의 경계에 닿았다.'

They journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iyeabarim, in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, to the east.

From there they set out and camped in Wadi Zered.

From there they journeyed and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites, for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD, "Waheb in Suphah, And the wadis of the Arnon,

And the slope of the wadis That extends to the site of Ar, And leans to the border of Moab."

그 후에 이스라엘 백성은 거기서 브엘로 갔다. 여호와께서는 그 곳에서 모세에게 '백성을 모아라. 내가 그들에게 물을 주겠다.' 하고 말씀하셨다.

그때 이스라엘 백성이 이렇게 노래하였다. '우물물아 솟아나라! 이 물을 노래하세! 이것은 귀족들이 판 우물이요 백성의 지도자들이 홀과 지팡이로 판 우물이라네.' 그리고 나서 그들은 그 광야를 떠나 맛다나,

나할리엘, 바못을 거쳐

광야가 내려다 보이는 비스가산 밑 모압 땅 계곡에 이르렀다.

From there they continued to Beer, that is the well where the LORD said to Moses, "Assemble the people, that I may give them water."

Then Israel sang this song: "Spring up, O well! Sing to it!

"The well, which the leaders sank, Which the nobles of the people dug, With the scepter and with their staffs." And from the wilderness they continued to Mattanah,

and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the land of Moab, at the top of Pisgah which overlooks the wasteland.

이스라엘 백성은 여기서 아모리 왕 시혼에게 사람을 보내 이렇게 요청하였다.

'우리가 당신의 땅을 통과할 수 있도록 허락해 주십시오. 우리가 밭이나 포도원에 들어가지 않고 우물물도 마시지 않으며 당신의 땅을 다 지나갈 때까지 큰 길로만 가겠습니다.'

그러나 시혼 왕은 이스라엘 백성이 자기 땅으로 지나가는 것을 거절하고 군대를 동원하여 광야의 야하스로 나와 이스라엘을 공격하였다.

그래서 이스라엘 백성은 그들을 대항하여 시혼 왕과 많은 군사를 죽이고 아르논강에서부터 암몬 사람의 국경 지대인 얍복강까지 점령하였다. 그러나 암몬 사람의 국경이 너무 튼튼하여 그들은 더 이상 진격하지 못하였다.

이렇게 해서 이스라엘 백성은 아모리 사람의 모든 성을 점령하고 헤스본과 그 주변 부락에 살았는데

Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying,

"Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the king's highway until we have passed through your border."

But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his border So Sihon gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.

Then Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the sons of Ammon; for the border of the sons of Ammon was Jazer.

Israel took all these cities and Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all her villages.

헤스본은 시혼 왕의 수도였으며 시혼은 한때 모압 왕과 싸워 아르논강에 이르는 그의 모든 땅을 점령할 왕이었다.

그래서 시인들은 이렇게 노래하였다. '시혼 왕의 수도, 헤스본으로 오너라. 시혼의 성을 굳게 세워라.

헤스본에서 시혼의 군대가 불같이 나와 모압의 아르성을 삼키며 아르논 고원의 주민들을 멸망시켰다!

모압아, 네가 재난을 당하였구나! 드모스의 백성들아, 너희가 멸망하였구나! 너희 아들들은 도망하는 신세가 되었으며 너희 딸들은 아모리 사람의 왕 시혼에게 포로가 되었다.

그러나 우리는 그들을 쳐서 헤스본에서 디본까지 멸망시켰으며 메드바에 이르는 노바까지 휩쓸어 버렸다.'

For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon.

Therefore those who use proverbs say, "Come to Heshbon! Let it be built! So let the city of Sihon be established.

"For a fire went forth from Heshbon, A flame from the town of Sihon; It devoured Ar of Moab, The dominant heights of the Arnon.

"Woe to you, O Moab! You are ruined, O people of Chemosh! He has given his sons as fugitives, And his daughters into captivity, To an Amorite king, Sihon.

"But we have cast them down, Heshbon is ruined as far as Dibon, Then we have laid waste even to Nophah, Which reaches to Medeba."

이렇게 해서 이스라엘 사람들은 아모리 사람의 땅에서 정착하게 되었다.

그리고 모세는 사람을 보내 야셀을 정착하게 한 후에 그 주변 부락들을 점령하여 거기에 살고 있던 아모리 사람들을 쫓아내 버렸다.

그 후에 그들은 바산을 향하여 올라갔다. 그러자 바산 왕 옥이 군대를 거느리고 나와 에드레이에서 이스라엘군과 싸우려고 맞섰다.

그때 여호와께서 모세에게 '그를 두려워하지 말아라. 너는 그와 그의 군대를 이기고 그 땅을 점령하게 될 것이다. 그러므로 너는 헤스본에서 통치하던 아모리 사람의 왕 시혼에게 행한 것을 그에게도 행하라.' 하고 말씀하셨다.

그래서 이스라엘군은 옥과 그의 아들들과 그의 군대를 하나도 남김없이 다 죽이고 그 땅을 점령하였다.

Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.

Moses sent to spy out Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.

Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan went out with all his people, for battle at Edrei.

But the LORD said to Moses, "Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon."

So they killed him and his sons and all his people, until there was no remnant left him; and they possessed his land.
