- And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.
- And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.
- And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;
- And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.
- For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.

- 또다시 이스라엘 백성이 야훼의 눈에 거슬리는 일을 하자, 야훼께서는 그들을 칠 년 동안 미디안족의 손에 부치셨다.
- 그래서 이스라엘은 미디안족에게 억눌려 살게 되었다. 이스라엘 백성은 미디안 사람들을 피하려고 산 속에 굴을 파야 했고 동굴과 험준한 지형을 이용해야 했다.
- 이스라엘 사람들이 씨를 뿌릴 때만 되면 미디안 사람들은 아말렉 사람과 동방의 백성을 이끌고 올라와
- 진을 치고 이스라엘을 쳐서 가자 어귀에 이르기까지 온 땅의 농사를 망쳐놓곤 하였다. 그들은 이스라엘 사람들이 먹고 살 것을 하나도 남겨두지 않았고 양 한 마리, 소 한 마리, 나귀 한 마리도 남겨두지 않았다.
- 그들은 가축떼를 몰고 천막을 떠멘 채 메뚜기떼처럼 몰려왔다. 사람이고 낙타고 이루 다 셀 수 없이 몰려들어와 온 땅을 망쳐버렸다.

- And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.
- And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,
- That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;
- And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;
- And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

- 이리하여 미디안은 이스라엘을 극도로 황폐하게 만들었다. 마침내 이스라엘 백성은 또 야훼께 울부짖었다.
- 이스라엘 백성이 미디안 사람들의 횡포를 견디다 못해 야훼께 부르짖자,
- 야훼께서는 한 예언자를 이스라엘 백성에게 보내시어 당신의 말씀을 전하게 하셨다. "이스라엘의 하느님 야훼께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. '내가 너희를 이집트에서 나오게 하였다. 종살이하던 집에서 너희를 구출해 내었다.
- 이집트인들의 손아귀에서, 너희를 못살게 굴던 모든 사람의 손아귀에서 너희를 건져내었다. 그리고 그들을 너희 앞에서 몰아내고 그 땅을 너희에게 주었다.
- 그리고 너희에게 이르기를, 나는 너희의 하느님 야훼요 아모리인들의 땅에서 산다고 해서 그들의 신들을 두려워하면 안 된다고 했는데 끝내 너희는 내 말을 듣지 않았다.'"

- And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.
- And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.
- And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
- And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
- And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.

- 야훼의 천사가 아비에젤의 후손 요아스의 성 오브라에 있는 상수리나무 밑에 와서 앉았다. 마침 요아스의 아들 기드온이 미디안 사람들에게 들키지 않으려고 밀 이삭을 포도주틀에서 떨고 있었는데,
- 야훼의 천사가 그에게 나타나 일렀다. "힘센 장사야, 야훼께서 너와 함께 계신다."
- 기드온이 반문하였다. "외람된 말씀입니다만, 야훼께서 우리와 함께 계시는데 왜 우리가 지금 이 모든 어려움을 겪고 있는 것입니까? 우리를 이집트에서 올라오게 하실 때 야훼께서 온갖 기적을 행하셨다는 말을 우리는 선조들에게서 들었습니다마는 그 기적들이 지금 다 어디로 갔습니까? 지금은 야훼께서 우리를 버리셨습니다. 우리를 이렇게 미디안 사람들의 손에 부치시지 않으셨습니까?"
- 그러자 야훼께서 그를 돌아보시며 말씀하셨다. "너에게 있는 그 힘을 가지고 이스라엘을 미디안의 손에서 구원하러 가거라. 내가 친히 너를 보낸다."
- 기드온이 말하였다. "외람된 말씀입니다만, 제가 어떻게 이스라엘을 구원할 수 있겠습니까? 아시는 대로 우리 문중의 부대는 므나쎄 지파에서도 가장 약합니다. 또 저는 제 집안에서도 가장 어린 사람입니다."

- And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.
- And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.
- Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.
- And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.
- And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

- 야훼께서 그에게 이르셨다. "내가 너와 함께 있으리라. 네가 미디안을 한 사람 해치우듯 쳐부수리라."
- 기드온이 말하였다. "정말로 제가 눈에 드셨거든, 저에게 이렇게 말씀하시는 분이 당신이시라는 표를 보여주십시오.
- 제가 다녀오겠습니다. 그 때까지 여기를 떠나지 말고 계십시오. 예물을 내다 드리겠습니다." 야훼께서 대답하셨다. "네가 돌아올 때까지 이 자리에 있겠다."
- 이 말을 듣고 기드온은 물러가 새끼 염소 한 마리를 잡아 요리하고 가루 한 에바로 누룩 넣지 않은 떡을 만들었다. 그리고 고기를 바구니에 담고 국물은 그릇에 담아 상수리나무 아래에 있는 그에게 가져갔다. 기드온이 오는 것을 보고
- 야훼의 천사가 그에게 일렀다. "고기하고 누룩 넣지 않은 떡을 가져다가 이 바위 위에 놓고 국물은 그 위에 부어라." 기드온이 그대로 하자,

- Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.
- And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O LORD God! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.
- And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
- Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
- And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father's young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:

- 야훼의 천사는 손에 든 지팡이를 뻗쳐 그 끝을 고기와 누룩 넣지 않은 떡에 대었다. 그러자 불이 바위에서 나와 고기와 누룩 넣지 않은 떡을 살라버렸다. 야훼의 천사는 그의 눈앞에서 사라졌다.
- 그제야 기드온은 그가 야훼의 천사라는 것을 알고 말하였다. "오, 주님 야훼여, 제가 주님의 천사를 대면해 뵈었군요!"
- 야훼께서 "안심하여라. 너는 죽지 않을 테니 두려워하지 마라." 하셨다.
- 그리하여 기드온은 거기에서 야훼께 제단을 쌓아 바치고는 그 제단을 "안심시켜 주시는 야훼"라 이름지어 불렀다. 그 제단은 이날까지도 아비에젤의 성 오브라에 서 있다.
- 그 날 밤, 야훼께서 기드온에게 말씀하셨다. "네 아비의 일곱 살 된 살진 소를 끌고, 네 부하 열 사람을 데리고 가서 네 아비의 바알 제단을 허물고 곁에 있는 아세라를 찍어라.

- And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.
- Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father's household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
- And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.
- And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.
- Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.

- 그리고 이 산성 꼭대기에 너의 하느님 야훼께 바칠 제단을 차곡차곡 쌓아라. 그리고 그 살진 소를 잡고 찍어낸 아세라 목상을 태워 번제를 드려라."
- 기드온은 부하 열 사람을 데리고 야훼께서 시키신 대로 하였다. 그러나 집안 사람들과 성읍 사람들이 두려워 낮에 하지 못하고 밤에 해치웠다.
- 다음날 아침 일찍 성읍 사람들이 일어나 보니, 어이없게도 바알의 제단은 헐려 있었고 곁에 서 있던 아세라 상은 찍혀 있었으며 새로 선 제단 위에는 살진 소가 번제로 타오르고 있었다.
- 그들은 누가 이런 짓을 했느냐고 서로 부산을 떨며 조사하고 캐어본 결과 요아스의 아들 기드온이 한 일임을 알아냈다.
- 그러자 마을 사람들은 요아스를 닦달하였다. "당신 아들을 내놓으시오. 죽여버려야겠소. 바알의 제단을 헐고 곁에 서 있던 아세라 상을 찍어버렸는데 어찌 그냥 두겠소?"

- And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.
- Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.
- Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.
- But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.
- And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

- 요아스는 둘러선 모든 사람에게 이렇게 답변하였다. "당신들이 바알을 역성하겠다는 거요? 당신들이 바알을 도울 수라도 있다고 생각하는 거요? 바알을 역성하는 사람은 해 뜨기 전에 죽을 테니 그리 아시오. 만일 바알이 신이라면, 기드온이 바알의 제단을 헐었으니 친히 나서서 기드온을 칠 것이 아니오?"
- 그 날 기드온은 여룹바알이란 이름을 얻었다. 바알의 제단을 헐었기 때문에 바알이 그와 맞설 것이라 해서 그렇게 부른 것이다.
- 마침 미디안 사람들은 아말렉 사람과 동방의 백성들을 다 모아가지고 강을 건너 이즈르엘 평지에 진을 치고 있었는데,
- 야훼의 영이 기드온을 사로잡았다. 그러자 기드온은 뿔나팔을 불어 아비에젤 일족에게 따라 나서라고 하였다.
- 그는 또 전령들을 므나쎄 온 지파에 보내어 므나쎄 지파도 따라 나서라고 불러내었다. 아셀 지파와 즈불룬 지파와 납달리 지파에도 전령들을 보내니 그들도 올라와서 기드온과 합세하였다.

- And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,
- Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
- And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.
- And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.
- And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

- 기드온이 하느님께 아뢰었다. "이미 말씀하신 대로 이스라엘을 제 손으로 구하시는 것이 하느님의 뜻이라면, 이렇게 해주십시오.
- 보십시오. 제가 타작 마당에 양털 한 뭉치를 이렇게 펴놓습니다. 만일 이 양털 뭉치에만 이슬이 내리고 땅바닥은 말라 있으면, 말씀하신 대로 이스라엘을 제 손으로 구하시려는 줄로 알겠습니다."
- 정말 그대로 되었다. 기드온이 다음날 아침 일찍 일어나서 양털 뭉치를 짜보니 한 대접 가득 물이 나왔다.
- 기드온은 다시 하느님께 아뢰었다. "다시 한 번 말씀드린다고 노하지 마십시오. 양털 뭉치로 꼭 한 번만 더 시험하게 해주십시오. 이번엔 양털만 말라 있고 사방의 땅바닥은 이슬로 젖게 해주십시오."
- 그 날 밤 하느님께서 그대로 해주셨다. 양털은 말라 있었고 사방의 땅바닥은 온통 이슬로 젖어 있었다.
