- Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.
- And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
- And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
- And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
- And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

- 불레셋은 전쟁을 일으키려고 군대를 소집하여 유다 소고에 집결했다가 소고와 아제카 사이에 있는 에베스담밈에 진을 쳤다.
- 사울은 이스라엘 군을 집결시켜 느티나무 골짜기에 진을 치고 불레셋에 맞서 전열을 갖추었다.
- 불레셋과 이스라엘이 골짜기를 사이에 두고 이쪽 저쪽 산 위에 자리를 잡고 있는데
- 불레셋 진영에서 골리앗이라고 하는 장수 하나가 싸움을 걸어왔다. 그는 갓 출신으로서 장신이었다.
- 머리에는 놋투구를 썼고 비늘갑옷을 입었는데 그 갑옷의 무게는 놋 오천 세겔이나 나갔으며,

- And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
- And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.
- And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
- If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
- And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

- 정강이에는 놋으로 만든 정강이받이를 찼고 어깨에는 놋으로 만든 창을 메고 있었다.
- 그 창대는 베틀 용두머리만큼 굵었고 창날은 쇠로 되어 있었는데 그 무게는 육백 세겔이 넘었다. 방패 당번을 앞에 세우고
- 나서서 그는 이스라엘 진영을 향하여 고함을 질렀다. "전열을 갖추어가지고 나오면 어쩌겠다는 말이냐? 너희 사울의 졸개들아, 이 불레셋 장수와 맞서 싸울 자를 골라 이리로 내려보내라.
- 만약 그자가 나한테 이겨서 나를 쳐죽이면 우리가 너희 종이 될 터이나, 내가 이겨서 그자를 죽이면 너희가 우리의 종이 되어 우리를 섬겨야 한다."
- 그리고 나서 그 불레셋 장수는 다시 소리쳤다. "내가 오늘 이렇게 너희 이스라엘 진영에 욕을 퍼붓는데도, 나와 결판을 낼 사람을 내보내지 못하겠느냐?"

- When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
- Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
- And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
- And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.
- But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

- 사울과 이스라엘 전군은 이 불레셋 장수의 말을 듣고 너무나 겁에 질려 떨고만 있었다.
- 그 때 유다 베들레헴에 이새라는 에브랏 사람이 있었는데, 그에게 다윗이라는 아들이 있었다. 아들 팔 형제를 둔 이새는 사울이 왕노릇 할 무렵에 이미 나이가 많았다.
- 이새의 아들 중에서 위로 세 아들은 사울을 따라 전장에 나가 있었다. 전장에 나간 세 아들의 이름은 맏아들 엘리압, 둘째 아비나답, 셋째 삼마였다.
- 다윗은 막내였다. 세 형들은 사울을 따라갔고
- 다윗은 사울에게 갔다가 다시 베들레헴에 돌아와서 아버지의 양떼를 치고 있었다.

- And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
- And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren;
- And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.
- Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
- And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

- 그런데 불레셋 장수가 아침 저녁으로 나서서 싸움을 걸어온 지가 사십 일이나 되었다.
- 이새가 아들 다윗에게 심부름을 시켰다. "네 형들에게 이 볶은 밀 한 말과 빵 열 덩이를 가져다 주어라. 진지로 뛰어가서 형들에게 주어라.
- 이 치이즈 열 개는 그 곳 사령관에게 갖다 드리고, 형들의 안부를 물어 형들이 잘 있다면 그 표를 받아가지고 오너라."
- 다윗의 형들은 사울이 거느린 이스라엘 군에 끼여 느티나무 골짜기에서 불레셋 군과 싸우고 있었다.
- 이튿날 아침 다윗은 일찍 일어나 양떼를 양지기에게 맡기고 아버지 이새가 일러준 대로 채비를 갖추어 길을 떠났다. 그가 진지에 다다랐을 때 마침 이스라엘 군은 대열을 지어 함성을 올리고 있었다.

- For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.
- And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.
- And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.
- And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.
- And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

- 이스라엘과 불레셋은 서로 전열을 지어 마주보고 있었다.
- 다윗은 가지고 온 보따리를 보급 장교에게 맡기고 대열로 달려가 형들에게 문안하였다.
- 그가 형들과 말을 나누고 있을 때 골리앗이라고 하는 갓 출신 불레셋 장수가 불레셋 대열에서 나와 전과 같은 말로 싸움을 걸어왔다. 다윗도 그 말을 들었다.
- 이스라엘 전군은 그를 보자 그만 겁에 질려 도망을 쳤다.
- "자네도 저걸 보았겠지. 또 나타나 이스라엘에게 욕지거리를 퍼붓고 있네. 우리 왕께서는 저자를 죽이는 사람에게 후한 상을 내리실 뿐만 아니라 부마로 삼고 그 집안 식구들에게는 모든 징발을 면제해 주신다더군." 이스라엘 군인들이 귀뜀해 주는 말을 듣고,

- And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
- And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
- And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
- And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?
- And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

- 다윗이 옆에 서 있는 사람들에게 물었다. "저 불레셋 사람을 죽여 우리의 치욕을 씻어주는 사람은 어떻게 해준다구요? 저 불레셋의 오랑캐 녀석이 도대체 누구기에 살아 계시는 하느님께서 거느리시는 이 군대에게 욕지거리를 하는 겁니까?"
- 군인들은 골리앗을 죽이면 이러이러하게 해준다고 같은 말을 일러주었다.
- 다윗이 이렇게 다른 사람들과 이야기하는 것을 큰 형 엘리압이 엿듣고 화를 내며 소리쳤다. "네가 무엇을 하겠다고 여기 내려왔느냐? 들판에 있는 몇 마리 안 되는 양 새끼는 누구한테 맡겼지? 이 건방진 못된 녀석, 네가 싸움 구경하러 온 걸 모를 줄 아느냐?"
- 다윗은 "그저 물어본 것뿐인데 내가 지금 무엇을 했다고 그래요?" 하고는
- 형을 떠나 다른 사람한테 가서 같은 말을 물어보았다. 대답은 전과 같았다.

- And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.
- And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
- And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
- And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
- And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

- 다윗이 한 말이 퍼져서 사울의 귀에까지 들어갔다. 그래서 사울이 그를 불러들이자
- 다윗이 사울에게 말하였다. "저자 때문에 상심하지 마십시오. 소인이 나가 저 불레셋 놈과 싸우겠습니다."
- 그러나 사울은 다윗을 말리며 말했다. "네가 나가 저 불레셋 놈과 싸우다니, 어림도 없는 일이다. 그는 어렸을 때부터 싸움으로 몸을 단련해 온 자인데, 너는 아직 나이 어린 소년이 아니냐?"
- 그러나 다윗은 굽히지 않았다. "소인은 아버지의 양을 쳐왔습니다. 사자나 곰이 나타나 양 새끼를 한 마리라도 물어가면
- 소인은 한사코 뒤쫓아가서 그놈을 쳐 그 아가리에서 양 새끼를 빼내곤 했습니다. 그놈이 돌아서서 덤벼들면 턱수염을 휘어잡고 때려죽였습니다.

- Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
- David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
- And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.
- And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
- And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

- 소인은 이렇게 사자도 죽이고 곰도 죽였습니다. 저 불레셋의 오랑캐놈도 그렇게 해치우겠습니다. 살아 계시는 하느님께서 거느리시는 이 군대에게 욕지거리를 퍼붓는 자를 어찌 그냥 내버려두겠습니까?"
- 계속해서 다윗이 말하였다. "사자와 곰으로부터 소인을 살려내신 야훼께서 저 불레셋 놈에게서도 소인을 살려내실 것입니다." 그제야 사울이 다윗에게 허락을 내렸다. "그러면 나가거라. 야훼께서 너와 함께 하시기를 빈다."
- 사울은 자기 군복을 다윗에게 입힌 다음, 머리에는 놋투구를 씌워주고 몸에는 갑옷을 입혔다.
- 그리고 자기 칼을 다윗의 군복에 채워주었다. 그러나 다윗은 이런 것을 입어본 일이 없었으므로 몸을 제대로 움직일 수가 없었다. 그래서 다윗은 사울에게 "이런 것은 입어본 적이 없습니다. 이래 가지고는 몸을 제대로 움직일 수가 없습니다." 하고는 그것을 모두 벗어버렸다.
- 그리고 다윗은 자기의 막대기를 집어 들고 개울가에서 자갈 다섯 개를 골라 목동 주머니에 넣은 다음 돌팔매 끈을 가지고 그 불레셋 장수 쪽으로 걸어갔다.

- And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
- And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
- And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
- And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
- Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

- 불레셋 장수도 방패 당번을 앞세우고 한 걸음 한 걸음 다윗에게 다가왔다.
- 불레셋 장수는 다윗을 건너다보고 볼이 붉은 잘생긴 어린아이라는 것을 알고는 우습게 여겨,
- "막대기는 왜 가지고 나왔느냐? 내가 개란 말이냐?" 하고는 자기 신의 이름을 부르며 다윗을 저주하였다.
- 그리고 불레셋 장수는 다윗을 을러메었다. "어서 나오너라. 네 살점을 하늘의 새와 들짐승의 밥으로 만들어주마."
- 그러나 다윗은 불레셋 장수에게 이렇게 응수하였다. "네가 칼을 차고 창과 표창을 잡고 나왔다만, 나는 만군의 야훼의 이름을 믿고 나왔다. 네가 욕지거리를 퍼붓는 이스라엘 군대의 하느님의 이름을 믿고 나왔다.

- This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
- And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.
- And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
- And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
- So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

- 오늘 야훼께서 너를 내 손아귀에 넣어주셨다. 나야말로 네놈을 쳐서 목을 떨어뜨리고 네 시체와 불레셋 전군의 시체를 하늘의 새와 들짐승의 밥으로 만들어주리라. 그리하여 이스라엘이 모시는 하느님이 어떤 분이신지 천하에 알리리라.
- 여기 모인 모든 사람은 이제 야훼께서는 칼이나 창 따위를 써서 구원하시는 것이 아니라는 사실을 알게 되리라. 야훼께서 몸소 싸우시어 네놈들을 우리 손에 넘겨주실 것이다."
- 불레셋 장수가 한 걸음 한 걸음 다가오자, 다윗은 재빨리 대열에서 벗어나 뛰쳐나가다가
- 주머니에서 돌 하나를 꺼내어 팔매질을 하여 그 불레셋 장수의 이마를 맞혔다. 돌이 이마에 박히자 그는 땅바닥에 쓰러졌다.
- 이리하여 다윗은 칼도 없이 팔매돌 하나로 불레셋 장수를 누르고 쳐죽였다.

- Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
- And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.
- And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.
- And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
- And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.

- 다윗은 달려가서 그 불레셋 장수를 밟고 서서 그의 칼집에서 칼을 빼어 목을 잘랐다. 불레셋 군은 저희 장수가 죽는 것을 보고 도망치기 시작하였다.
- 이스라엘과 유다 군대는 때를 놓치지 않고 함성을 지르며 불레셋 군을 추격하여 갓을 지나 에크론 성문에까지 이르렀다. 그리하여 사아라임에서 갓과 에크론에 이르는 길에는 불레셋 군의 시체가 뒹굴게 되었다.
- 이스라엘 군은 추격을 마치고 돌아와서 불레셋 진영을 약탈하였다.
- 다윗은 그 불레셋 장수의 목을 예루살렘으로 가져가고 그의 무기는 자기의 천막에 간직하였다.
- 사울은 다윗이 그 불레셋 장수와 대결하러 나가는 것을 보고 사령관 아브넬에게 "아브넬 사령관, 저기 저 소년은 누구의 아들이오?" 하고 물었다. "황공하오나, 소인은 아는 바 없습니다." 아브넬이 이렇게 대답하자,

- And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.
- And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
- And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.

- 왕은 아브넬에게 "그 청년이 누구의 아들인지 알아보시오." 하고 일렀다.
- 다윗이 그 불레셋 장수를 죽이고 돌아오는데 아브넬이 그를 사울 앞으로 인도했다. 그의 손에는 불레셋 장수의 목이 들려 있었다.
- 사울이 "젊은이는 누구의 아들인가?" 하고 묻자 다윗이 "저는 베들레헴에 사는 임금님의 종인 이새의 아들입니다." 하고 대답하였다.
