- Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
- Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
- A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both.
- Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?
- Open rebuke is better than secret love.

- 내일 일을 자랑하지 마라. 하루 사이에 무슨 변이 생길지 모른다.
- 자화자찬하지 말고 남에게 칭찬을 받도록 하여라. 칭찬은 남이 해주는 것이지 제 입술로 하는 것이 아니다.
- 돌이 무겁고 모래가 힘겨워도 어리석은 자가 귀찮게 구는 것보다는 가볍다.
- 화가 나면 사나워지고 분이 터지면 막을 수 없겠지만 사람이 질투를 부리면 누가 당해 내랴.
- 속으로 사랑하는 것보다 터놓고 꾸짖는 것이 낫다.
