창세기 32:1-33:20

 야곱은 형 에서와 화해하기 위해 사람들을 보냈지만, 그들로부터 에서가 큰 무리를 이끌고 온다는 보고를 받자 두려워 떨었다. 야곱은 모든 소유를 얍복 강 건너편으로 보내고 홀로 그곳에 남아 하나님의 사자와 날이 새도록 씨름하던 끝에 환도뼈가 부러졌다. 그러나 결국 하나님의 복을 받고 이름도 이스라엘로 불리게 되었다. 에서와 화해한 야곱은 세겜에 이르러 단을 쌓았다.
  
  하나님과 씨름하는 야곱(32:1-32:32)    
 
  1. And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
  2. And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
  3. And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
  4. And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
  5. And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
  1. 야곱이 길을 떠나서 가는데, 하나님의 천사들이 야곱 앞에 나타났다.
  2. 야곱이 그들을 알아보고 "이 곳은 하나님의 진이구나!" 하면서, 그 곳 이름을 마하나임이라고 하였다.
  3. 야곱이 에돔 벌 세일 땅에 사는 형 에서에게, 자기보다 먼저 심부름꾼들을 보내면서
  4. 지시하였다. "너희는 나의 형님 에서에게 가서, 이렇게 전하여라. '주인의 종 야곱이 이렇게 아룁니다. 저는 그 동안 라반에게 몸붙여 살며, 최근까지도 거기에 머물러 있었습니다.
  5. 저에게는 소와 나귀, 양 떼와 염소 떼, 남종과 여종이 있습니다. 형님께 이렇게 소식을 전하여 드립니다. 형님께서 저를 너그럽게 보아 주십시오.'"
  1. And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
  2. Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
  3. And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
  4. And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
  5. I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
  1. 심부름꾼들이 에서에게 갔다가, 야곱에게 돌아와서 말하였다. "주인 어른의 형님인 에서 어른께 다녀왔습니다. 그분은 지금 부하 사백 명을 거느리고, 주인 어른을 치려고 이리로 오고 있습니다."
  2. 야곱은 너무나 두렵고 걱정이 되어서, 자기 일행과 양 떼와 소 떼와 낙타 떼를 두 패로 나누었다.
  3. 에서가 와서 한 패를 치면, 나머지 한 패라도 피하게 해야겠다는 속셈이었다.
  4. 야곱은 기도를 드렸다. "할아버지 아브라함을 보살펴 주신 하나님, 아버지 이삭을 보살펴 주신 하나님, 고향 친족에게로 돌아가면 은혜를 베푸시겠다고 저에게 약속하신 주님,
  5. 주님께서 주님의 종에게 베푸신 이 모든 은총과 온갖 진실을, 이 종은 감히 받을 자격이 없습니다. 제가 이 요단 강을 건널 때에, 가진 것이라고는 지팡이 하나뿐이었습니다만, 이제 저는 이처럼 두 무리나 이루었습니다.
  1. Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
  2. And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
  3. And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
  4. Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
  5. Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
  1. 부디, 제 형의 손에서, 에서의 손에서, 저를 건져 주십시오. 형이 와서 저를 치고, 아내들과 자식들까지 죽일까 두렵습니다.
  2. 주님께서 말씀하시기를 '내가 반드시 너에게 은혜를 베풀어서, 너의 씨가 바다의 모래처럼 셀 수도 없이 많아지게 하겠다' 하시지 않으셨습니까?"
  3. 그 날 밤에 야곱은 거기에서 묵었다. 야곱은 자기가 가진 것 가운데서, 자기의 형 에서에게 줄 선물을 따로 골라 냈다.
  4. 암염소 이백 마리와 숫염소 스무 마리, 암양 이백 마리와 숫양 스무 마리,
  5. 젖을 빨리는 낙타 서른 마리와 거기에 딸린 새끼들, 암소 마흔 마리와 황소 열 마리, 암나귀 스무 마리와 새끼 나귀 열 마리였다.
  1. And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
  2. And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
  3. Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
  4. And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
  5. And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
  1. 야곱은 이것들을 몇 떼로 나누고, 자기의 종들에게 맡겨서, 자기보다 앞서서 가게 하고, 떼와 떼 사이에 거리를 두게 하라고 일렀다.
  2. 야곱은 맨 앞에 선 종에게 지시하였다. "나의 형 에서가 너를 만나서, 네가 뉘 집 사람이며, 어디로 가는 길이며, 네가 끌고 가는 이 짐승들이 다 누구의 것이냐고 묻거든,
  3. 너는 그에게 '이것은 모두 주인의 종 야곱의 것인데, 야곱이 그 형님 에서께 드리는 선물입니다. 야곱은 우리 뒤에 옵니다' 하고 말하여라."
  4. 야곱은, 둘째 떼를 몰고 떠나는 종과, 셋째 떼를 몰고 떠나는 종과, 나머지 떼를 몰고 떠나는 종들에게도, 똑같은 말로 지시하였다. "너희는 에서 형님을 만나거든, 그에게 똑같이 말하여야 한다.
  5. 그리고 '주인의 종 야곱은 우리 뒤에 옵니다' 하고 말하는 것을 잊지 않도록 하여라." 야곱이 이렇게 지시한 데는, 자기가 미리 여러 차례 보낸 선물들이 그 형 에서의 분노를 서서히 풀어 주고, 마침내 서로 만날 때에는, 형이 자기를 반가이 맞아 주리라고 생각하였기 때문이다
  1. So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
  2. And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
  3. And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
  4. And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
  5. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
  1. 그래서 야곱은 선물을 실은 떼를 앞세워서 보내고, 자기는 그 날 밤에 장막에서 묵었다.
  2. 그 밤에 야곱은 일어나서, 두 아내와 두 여종과 열한 아들을 데리고, 얍복 나루를 건넜다.
  3. 야곱은 이렇게 식구들을 인도하여 개울을 건너 보내고, 자기에게 딸린 모든 소유도 건너 보내고 난 다음에,
  4. 뒤에 홀로 남았는데, 어떤 이가 나타나 야곱을 붙잡고 동이 틀 때까지 씨름을 하였다.
  5. 그는 도저히 야곱을 이길 수 없다는 것을 알고서, 야곱의 엉덩이뼈를 쳤다. 야곱은 그와 씨름을 하다가 엉덩이뼈를 다쳤다.
  1. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
  2. And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
  3. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
  4. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
  5. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
  1. 그가, 날이 새려고 하니 놓아 달라고 하였지만, 야곱은 자기에게 축복해 주지 않으면 보내지 않겠다고 떼를 썼다.
  2. 그가 야곱에게 물었다. "너의 이름이 무엇이냐?" 야곱이 대답하였다. "야곱입니다."
  3. 그 사람이 말하였다. "네가 하나님과도 겨루어 이겼고, 사람과도 겨루어 이겼으니, 이제 네 이름은 야곱이 아니라 이스라엘이다."
  4. 야곱이 말하였다. "당신의 이름이 무엇인지 가르쳐 주십시오." 그러나 그는 "어찌하여 나의 이름을 묻느냐?" 하면서, 그 자리에서 야곱에게 축복하여 주었다.
  5. 야곱은 "내가 하나님의 얼굴을 직접 뵙고도, 목숨이 이렇게 붙어 있구나!" 하면서, 그 곳 이름을 브니엘이라고 하였다.
  1. And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
  2. Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
  1. 그가 브니엘을 지날 때에, 해가 솟아올라서 그를 비추었다. 그는, 엉덩이뼈가 어긋났으므로, 절뚝거리며 걸었다.
  2. 밤에 나타난 그가 야곱의 엉덩이뼈의 힘줄을 쳤으므로, 이스라엘 사람들은 오늘날까지 짐승의 엉덩이뼈의 큰 힘줄을 먹지 않는다.
 
  에서와의 화해(33:1-33:20)    
 
  1. And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.
  2. And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.
  3. And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
  4. And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.
  5. And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.
  1. 야곱이 고개를 들어 보니, 에서가 장정 사백 명을 거느리고 오고 있었다. 야곱은, 아이들을 레아와 라헬과 두 여종에게 나누어서 맡기고,
  2. 두 여종과 그들에게서 난 아이들은 앞에 세우고, 레아와 그에게서 난 아이들은 그 뒤에 세우고, 라헬과 요셉은 맨 뒤에 세워서 따라오게 하였다.
  3. 야곱은 맨 앞으로 나가서 형에게로 가까이 가면서, 일곱 번이나 땅에 엎드려 절을 하였다.
  4. 그러자 에서가 달려와서, 그를 끌어안았다. 에서는 두 팔을 벌려, 야곱의 목을 끌어안고서, 입을 맞추고, 둘은 함께 울었다.
  5. 에서가 고개를 들어, 여인들과 아이들을 보면서 물었다. "네가 데리고 온 이 사람들은 누구냐?" 야곱이 대답하였다. "이것들은 하나님이 형님의 못난 아우에게 은혜로 주신 자식들입니다."
  1. Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
  2. And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
  3. And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.
  4. And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.
  5. And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.
  1. 그러자 두 여종과 그들에게서 난 아이들이 앞으로 나와서, 엎드려 절을 하였다.
  2. 다음에는 레아와 그에게서 난 아이들이 앞으로 나와서, 엎드려 절을 하였다. 마지막으로 요셉과 라헬이 나와서, 그들도 엎드려 절을 하였다.
  3. 에서가 물었다. "내가 오는 길에 만난 가축 떼는 모두 웬 것이냐?" 야곱이 대답하였다. "형님께 은혜를 입고 싶어서, 가지고 온 것입니다."
  4. 에서가 말하였다. "아우야, 나는 넉넉하다. 너의 것은 네가 가져라."
  5. 야곱이 말하였다. "아닙니다, 형님, 형님께서 저를 좋게 보시면, 제가 드리는 이 선물을 받아 주십시오. 형님께서 저를 이렇게 너그럽게 맞아 주시니, 형님의 얼굴을 뵙는 것이 하나님의 얼굴을 뵙는 듯합니다.
  1. Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.
  2. And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.
  3. And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.
  4. Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.
  5. And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.
  1. 하나님이 저에게 은혜를 베푸시므로, 제가 가진 것도 이렇게 넉넉하게 되었습니다. 그러니 제가 형님께 가지고 온 이 선물을 기꺼이 받아 주시기 바랍니다." 야곱이 간곡히 권하므로, 에서는 그 선물을 받았다.
  2. 에서가 말하였다. "자, 이제 갈 길을 서두르자. 내가 앞장을 서마."
  3. 야곱이 그에게 말하였다. "형님께서도 아시다시피, 아이들이 아직 어립니다. 또 저는 새끼 딸린 양 떼와 소 떼를 돌봐야 합니다. 하루만이라도 지나치게 빨리 몰고 가면 다 죽습니다.
  4. 형님께서는 이 아우보다 앞서서 떠나십시오. 그렇게 하시면, 저는 앞에 가는 이 가축 떼와 아이들을 이끌고, 그들의 걸음에 맞추어 천천히 세일로 가서, 형님께 나가겠습니다."
  5. 에서가 말하였다. "그렇다면, 내가 나의 부하 몇을 너와 같이 가게 하겠다." 야곱이 말렸다. "그러실 것까지는 없습니다. 형님께서 저를 너그럽게 맞아 주신 것만으로도 만족합니다."
  1. So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.
  2. And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
  3. And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city.
  4. And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.
  5. And he erected there an altar, and called it EleloheIsrael.
  1. 그 날로 에서는 길을 떠나 세일로 돌아갔고,
  2. 야곱은 숙곳으로 갔다. 거기에서 야곱은 자기들이 살 집과 짐승이 바람을 피할 우리를 지었다. 그래서 그 곳 이름이 숙곳이 되었다.
  3. 야곱이 밧단아람을 떠나, 가나안 땅의 세겜 성에 무사히 이르러서, 그 성 앞에다가 장막을 쳤다.
  4. 야곱은, 장막을 친 그 밭을, 세겜의 아버지인 하몰의 아들들에게서 은 백 냥을 주고 샀다.
  5. 야곱은 거기에서 제단을 쌓고, 그 이름을 엘엘로헤이스라엘이라고 하였다.
