- And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.
- And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.
- And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;
- And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.
- For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.

- 이스라엘 자손이 주님께서 보시는 앞에서 악한 일을 저질렀다. 그래서 주님께서는 일곱 해 동안 그들을 미디안의 손에 넘겨 주셨다.
- 미디안 사람의 세력이 이스라엘을 억누르니, 이스라엘 자손은 미디안 사람들 때문에 산에 있는 동굴과 요새에 도피처를 마련하였다.
- 이스라엘 자손이 씨앗을 심어 놓으면, 미디안 사람과 아말렉 사람과 동방 사람들이 쳐올라오는 것이었다.
- 그들은 이스라엘을 마주보고 진을 쳐놓고는, 가사에 이르기까지 온 땅의 소산물을 망쳐 놓았다. 그리고 이스라엘에 먹을 것을 하나도 남기지 않았으며, 양이나 소나 나귀까지도 남기지 않았다.
- 그들은 가축 떼를 몰고 장막을 가지고 메뚜기 떼처럼 쳐들어왔는데, 사람과 낙타가 이루 셀 수 없을 만큼 많았다. 그들이 들어와서 온 땅을 황폐하게 만들었다.

- And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.
- And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,
- That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;
- And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;
- And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

- 이스라엘이 미디안 때문에 전혀 기를 펴지 못하게 되자, 마침내 이스라엘 자손이 주님께 울부짖었다.
- 이스라엘 자손이 미디안 사람들 때문에 주님께 울부짖을 때에,
- 주님께서 이스라엘 자손에게 한 예언자를 보내어 말씀하셨다. "나 주 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. 바로 내가 너희를 이집트에서 나오게 하였고, 종살이하던 집에서 너희를 이끌어 내었다.
- 내가 너희를 이집트 사람과 또 너희를 억압하는 모든 원수의 손에서 구하여 내었다. 내가 그들을 너희가 보는 앞에서 쫓아내었고 그 땅을 너희에게 주었다.
- 그러면서 나는 너희에게 말하였다. '나는 주 너희의 하나님이다. 너희가 아모리 사람의 땅에서 살고 있으나, 아모리 사람의 신들은 섬기지 말아라.' 이렇게 말하였으나, 너희는 내 말을 듣지 않았다."

- And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.
- And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.
- And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
- And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
- And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.

- 주님의 천사가 아비에셀 사람 요아스의 땅 오브라에 있는 상수리나무 아래에 와서 앉았다. 그 때에 요아스의 아들 기드온은, 미디안 사람들에게 들키지 않으려고, 포도주 틀에서 몰래 밀이삭을 타작하고 있었다.
- 주님의 천사가 그에게 나타나서 "힘센 장사야, 주님께서 너와 함께 계신다" 하고 말하였다.
- 그러자 기드온이 그에게 되물었다. "감히 여쭙습니다만, 주님께서 우리와 함께 계신다면, 어째서 우리가 이 모든 어려움을 겪습니까? 우리 조상이 우리에게, 주님께서 놀라운 기적을 일으키시어 우리 백성을 이집트에서 인도해 내셨다고 말하였는데, 그 모든 기적들이 다 어디에 있단 말입니까? 지금은 주님께서 우리를 버리시기까지 하셔서, 우리가 미디안 사람의 손아귀에 넘어가고 말았습니다."
- 그러자 주님께서 그를 바라보시며 말씀하셨다. "너에게 있는 그 힘을 가지고 가서, 이스라엘을 미디안의 손에서 구하여라. 내가 친히 너를 보낸다."
- 기드온이 주님께 아뢰었다. "감히 여쭙습니다만, 내가 어떻게 이스라엘을 구할 수 있습니까? 보시는 바와 같이 나의 가문은 므낫세 지파 가운데서도 가장 약하고, 또 나는 아버지의 집에서도 가장 어린 사람입니다."

- And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.
- And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.
- Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.
- And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.
- And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

- 그러나 주님께서는 "내가 반드시 너와 함께 있을 것이니, 네가 미디안 사람들을 마치 한 사람을 쳐부수듯 쳐부술 것이다" 하고 말씀하셨다.
- 기드온이 또 주님께 아뢰었다. "참으로 나를 좋게 보아 주신다면, 지금 나에게 말씀하시는 분이 정말로 주님이시라는 증거를 보여 주십시오.
- 내가 예물을 꺼내와서 가져다 놓겠으니, 내가 돌아올 때까지 떠나지 마십시오." 그러자 주님께서 대답하셨다. "네가 돌아올 때까지, 내가 그대로 머물러 있겠다."
- 기드온은 즉시 가서, 염소 새끼 한 마리로 요리를 만들고, 밀가루 한 에바로 누룩을 넣지 않은 빵도 만들고, 고기는 바구니에 담고, 국물은 그릇에 담아, 상수리나무 아래로 가지고 가서 천사에게 주었다.
- 하나님의 천사가 그에게 말하였다. "그 고기와 누룩 넣지 않은 빵을 가져다가 이 바위 위에 놓고, 국물을 그 위에 부어라." 기드온이 그대로 하였더니,

- Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.
- And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O LORD God! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.
- And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
- Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
- And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father's young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:

- 주님의 천사가 손에 든 지팡이 끝을 내밀어, 고기와 누룩 넣지 않은 빵에 댔다. 그러자 불이 바위에서 나와서, 고기와 누룩 넣지 않은 빵을 살라 버렸다. 그런 다음에 주님의 천사는 그 앞에서 사라져서 보이지 않았다.
- 기드온은 그가 주님의 천사라는 것을 알고, 떨면서 말하였다. "주 하나님, 내가 주님의 천사를 대면하여 뵈었습니다."
- 그러자 주님께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. "안심하여라. 두려워하지 말아라. 너는 죽지 않는다."
- 기드온은 거기에서 주님께 제단을 쌓아 바치고는, 그 제단을 '여호와 샬롬'이라고 불렀다. （그 제단은 오늘날까지도 아비에셀 사람의 땅인 오브라에 서 있다.）
- 그 날 밤에 주님께서 기드온에게 말씀하셨다. "네 아버지의 외양간에서 어린 수소 한 마리를 끌어오고, 또 일곱 해 된 수소도 한 마리를 끌어오고, 네 아버지의 바알 제단을 허물고, 그 곁에 있는 아세라 상을 찍어라.

- And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.
- Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father's household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
- And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.
- And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.
- Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.

- 그런 다음에 이 산성 꼭대기에서 규례에 따라 주 너의 하나님께 제단을 쌓고, 그 둘째 수소를 잡고, 찍어 낸 아세라 목상으로 불을 살라 번제를 드려라."
- 그리하여 기드온은 종들 가운데서 열 명을 데리고, 주님께서 말씀하신 대로 하였다. 그러나 그의 아버지 집안 사람들과 성읍 사람들을 두려워하여, 감히 그 일을 낮에 하지 못하고 밤에야 하였다.
- 다음날 아침 일찍 성읍 사람들이 일어나 보니, 바알 제단이 헐려 있고, 곁에 서 있던 아세라 상은 찍혀 있었으며, 새로 만든 제단 위에는 둘째 수소가 번제로 타오르고 있는 것이 아닌가!
- "누가 이런 짓을 하였느냐?" 하고 그들은 서로 물어 보았다. 그들이 캐묻고 조사하다가, 요아스의 아들 기드온이 이 일을 저질렀다는 것을 알았다.
- 그래서 성읍 사람들은 요아스에게 말하였다. "당신의 아들을 끌어내시오. 그는 죽어야 마땅하오. 그가 바알의 제단을 헐고, 그 곁에 서 있던 아세라 상을 찍어 버렸소."

- And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.
- Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.
- Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.
- But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.
- And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

- 요아스가 자기를 둘러선 모든 사람에게 이렇게 말하였다. "당신들이 바알의 편을 들어 싸우겠다는 것이오? 당신들이 바알을 구할 수 있다는 말이오? 누구든지 그의 편을 들어 싸우는 사람은 내일 아침에 죽음을 면하지 못할 것이오. 만일 바알이 신이라면, 자기의 제단을 헌 사람과 직접 싸우도록 놓아 두시오."
- 그래서 그 날 사람들은 기드온을 여룹바알이라고 불렀다. 그가 바알의 제단을 헐었으니, 바알이 직접 그와 싸우게 하라는 말에서 그렇게 부른 것이다.
- 그 때에 미디안 사람과 아말렉 사람과 사막 부족이 모두 함께 모여 요단 강을 건너와서, 이스르엘 평지에 진을 쳤다.
- 주님의 영이 기드온을 사로잡으니, 기드온은 나팔을 불어 아비에셀 족을 모아 자기를 따르게 하고,
- 전령들을 온 므낫세 지파에 보내어 그들도 자기를 따르게 하였으며, 아셀 지파와 스불론 지파와 납달리 지파에도 전령들을 보내니, 그들도 그와 합세하려고 올라왔다.

- And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,
- Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
- And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.
- And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.
- And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

- 기드온이 하나님께 아뢰었다. "참으로 주님께서는 말씀하신 대로 나를 시켜서 이스라엘을 구하시려고 하십니까?
- 그러시다면, 내가 양털 한 뭉치를 타작마당에 놓아 두겠습니다. 이슬이 이 양털뭉치에만 내리고 다른 땅은 모두 말라 있으면, 주님께서 말씀하신 대로, 저를 시켜서 이스라엘을 구하시려는 것으로 알겠습니다."
- 그러자 정말 그렇게 되었다. 기드온이 다음날 아침 일찍 일어나서 양털뭉치를 쥐어짜 보니 양털뭉치에 내린 이슬이 쏟아져 그릇에 물이 가득 찼다.
- 기드온이 또 하나님께 여쭈었다. "주님, 저에게 노하지 마십시오. 제가 한 번 더 말씀드리고자 합니다. 양털뭉치로 한 번만 더 시험하여 보게 하여 주십시오. 이번에는 양털은 마르고, 사방의 모든 땅에는 이슬이 내리게 하여 주십시오."
- 그 날 밤에 하나님은 그대로 하여 주셨다. 양털은 말라 있었고, 사방의 모든 땅만 이슬로 젖어 있었던 것이다.
