- Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.
- And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
- And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
- And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
- And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

- 블레셋 사람들이 또 전쟁을 일으키려고 군인을 모두 모아, 유다의 소고에 집결시키고, 소고와 아세가 사이에 있는 에베스담밈에 진을 쳤다.
- 사울도 이스라엘 군인들을 집결시켜 엘라 평지에 진을 친 뒤에, 블레셋 군인들과 맞서서 싸울 전열을 갖추었다.
- 그리하여 블레셋과 이스라엘이 골짜기를 사이에 두고, 이쪽 저쪽 산 위에서 맞서서 버티고 있었다.
- 블레셋 진에서 가드 사람 골리앗이라는 장수가 싸움을 걸려고 나섰다. 그는 키가 여섯 규빗 하고도 한 뼘이나 더 되었다.
- 머리에는 놋으로 만든 투구를 쓰고, 몸에는 비늘 갑옷을 입었는데, 그 갑옷의 무게는 놋 오천 세겔이나 되었다.

- And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
- And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.
- And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
- If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
- And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

- 다리에는 놋으로 만든 각반을 차고, 어깨에는 놋으로 만든 창을 메고 있었다.
- 그의 창자루는 베틀의 용두머리만큼 굵었고, 그 창날의 무게는 쇠 육백 세겔이나 되었다. 그의 앞에서는 방패를 든 사람이 걸어 나왔다.

- 그가 나를 쳐죽여 이기면, 우리가 너희의 종이 되겠다. 그러나 내가 그를 쳐죽여 이기면, 너희가 우리의 종이 되어서 우리를 섬겨야 한다."
- 이 블레셋 사람이 다시 고함을 질렀다. "내가 오늘 이스라엘 군대를 이처럼 모욕하였으니, 너희는 어서 나에게 한 사람을 내보내어 나하고 맞붙어 싸우게 하여라."

- When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
- Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
- And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
- And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.
- But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

- 사울과 온 이스라엘은 그 블레셋 사람이 하는 말을 듣고, 몹시 놀라서 떨기만 하였다.
- 다윗은 유다 땅 베들레헴에 있는 에브랏 사람 이새의 아들이다. 이새에게는 모두 아들이 여덟 명 있었는데, 사울이 다스릴 무렵에, 이새는 이미 나이가 매우 많은 노인이었다.
- 이새의 큰 아들 셋은 사울을 따라 싸움터에 나가 있었다. 군대에 가 있는 그 세 아들의 이름은, 맏아들이 엘리압이요, 둘째가 아비나답이요, 셋째가 삼마였다.
- 다윗은 여덟 형제 가운데서 막내였다. 위로 큰 형들 셋만 사울을 따라 싸움터에 나가 있었고,
- 다윗은 사울이 있는 곳과 베들레헴 사이를 오가며, 아버지의 양 떼를 치고 있었다.

- And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
- And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren;
- And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.
- Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
- And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

- 그 블레셋 사람은 아침 저녁으로 가까이 나아와서, 계속 싸움을 걸어 왔고, 그런 지가 벌써 사십 일이나 되었다.
- 이 때에 이새가 자기 아들 다윗에게 일렀다. "여기에 있는 볶은 곡식 한 에바와 빵 열 덩어리를 너의 형들에게 가져다 주어라. 너는 그것을 가지고 빨리 진으로 가서, 너의 형들에게 주어라.
- 그리고 이 치즈 열 덩이는 부대장에게 갖다 드리고, 너의 형들의 안부를 물은 뒤에, 형들이 잘 있다는 증거물을 가지고 오너라."
- 그 무렵 사울은, 다윗의 형들을 비롯하여 이스라엘 군인을 모두 거느리고, 엘라 평지에서 블레셋 사람과 싸우고 있었다.
- 다음날 아침에 다윗은 일찍 일어나서, 양 떼를 다른 양치기에게 맡기고, 아버지 이새가 시킨 대로 짐을 가지고 길을 떠났다. 그가 진영에 이르렀을 때에, 군인들은 마침 전선으로 나아가면서, 전투 개시의 함성을 올리고,

- For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.
- And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.
- And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.
- And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.
- And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

- 이스라엘과 블레셋 군인이 전열을 지어 서로 맞서 있었다.
- 다윗은, 가지고 온 짐을 군수품 담당자에게 맡기고, 전선으로 달려가, 자기의 형들에게 이르러 안부를 물었다.
- 다윗이 형들과 이야기하고 있는 동안에, 마침 블레셋 사람 쪽에서 가드 사람 골리앗이라는 장수가 그 대열에서 나와서, 전과 똑같은 말로 싸움을 걸어왔다. 다윗도 그 소리를 들었다.
- 이스라엘 사람들은 그를 보고 무서워하며, 모두 그 사람 앞에서 달아났다.
- "저기 올라온 저 자를 좀 보게." 군인들이 서로 말하였다. "또 올라와서 이스라엘을 모욕하고 있어. 임금님은, 누구든지 저 자를 죽이면 많은 상을 내리실 뿐 아니라, 임금님의 사위로 삼으시고, 그의 집안에는 모든 세금을 면제해 주시겠다고 하셨네."

- And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
- And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
- And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
- And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?
- And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

- 다윗이 곁에 서 있는 사람들에게 물었다. "저 블레셋 사람을 죽이고 이스라엘이 받는 치욕을 씻어내는 사람에게는, 어떻게 해준다구요? 저 할례도 받지 않은 블레셋 녀석이 무엇이기에, 살아 계시는 하나님을 섬기는 군인들을 이렇게 모욕하는 것입니까?"
- 군인들은 앞에서 말한 내용과 같이, 저 자를 죽이는 사람에게는 이러이러한 상이 내릴 것이라고 대답해 주었다.
- 다윗이 군인들과 이렇게 이야기하는 것을 맏형 엘리압이 듣고, 다윗에게 화를 내며 꾸짖었다. "너는 어쩌자고 여기까지 내려왔느냐? 들판에 있는, 몇 마리도 안 되는 양은 누구에게 떠맡겨 놓았느냐? 이 건방지고 고집 센 녀석아, 네가 전쟁 구경을 하려고 내려온 것을, 누가 모를 줄 아느냐?"
- 다윗이 대들었다. "내가 무엇을 잘못하였다는 겁니까? 물어 보지도 못합니까?"
- 그런 다음에 다윗은, 몸을 돌려 형 옆에서 떠나 다른 사람 앞으로 가서, 똑같은 말로 또 물어 보았다. 거기에서도 사람들이 똑같은 말을 하였다.

- And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.
- And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
- And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
- And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
- And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

- 다윗이 한 말이 사람들에게 알려지고, 누군가가 그것을 사울에게 알렸다. 그러자 사울이 그를 데려오게 하였다.
- 다윗이 사울에게 말하였다. "누구든지 저 자 때문에 사기를 잃어서는 안 됩니다. 임금님의 종인 제가 나가서, 저 블레셋 사람과 싸우겠습니다."
- 그러나 사울은 다윗을 말렸다. "그만두어라. 네가 어떻게 저 자와 싸운단 말이냐? 저 자는 평생 군대에서 뼈가 굵은 자이지만, 너는 아직 어린 소년이 아니냐?"
- 그러나 다윗은 굽히지 않고 사울에게 말하였다. "임금님의 종인 저는 아버지의 양 떼를 지켜 왔습니다. 사자나 곰이 양 떼에 달려들어 한 마리라도 물어가면,
- 저는 곧바로 뒤쫓아가서 그 놈을 쳐죽이고, 그 입에서 양을 꺼내어 살려 내곤 하였습니다. 그 짐승이 저에게 덤벼들면, 그 턱수염을 붙잡고 때려 죽였습니다.

- Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
- David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
- And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.
- And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
- And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

- 제가 이렇게 사자도 죽이고 곰도 죽였으니, 저 할례받지 않은 블레셋 사람도 그 꼴로 만들어 놓겠습니다. 살아 계시는 하나님의 군대를 모욕한 자를 어찌 그대로 두겠습니까?"
- 다윗은 말을 계속하였다. "사자의 발톱이나 곰의 발톱에서 저를 살려 주신 주님께서, 저 블레셋 사람의 손에서도 틀림없이 저를 살려 주실 것입니다." 그제서야 사울이 다윗에게 허락하였다. "그렇다면, 나가도 좋다. 주님께서 너와 함께 계시길 바란다."
- 사울은 자기의 군장비로 다윗을 무장시켜 주었다. 머리에는 놋투구를 씌워 주고, 몸에는 갑옷을 입혀 주었다.
- 다윗은, 허리에 사울의 칼까지 차고, 시험삼아 몇 걸음 걸어 본 다음에, 사울에게 "이런 무장에는 제가 익숙하지 못합니다. 이렇게 무장을 한 채로는 걸어갈 수도 없습니다" 하고는 그것을 다 벗었다. 그렇게 무장을 해 본 일이 없었기 때문이다.
- 그런 다음에, 다윗은 목동의 지팡이를 들고, 시냇가에서 돌 다섯 개를 골라서, 자기가 메고 다니던 목동의 도구인 주머니에 집어 넣은 다음, 자기가 쓰던 무릿매를 손에 들고, 그 블레셋 사람에게 가까이 나아갔다.

- And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
- And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
- And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
- And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
- Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

- 그 블레셋 사람도 방패 든 사람을 앞세우고 다윗에게 점점 가까이 다가왔다.
- 그 블레셋 사람은 다윗을 보고 나서, 그가 다만 잘생긴 홍안 소년에 지나지 않는다는 것을 알고는, 그를 우습게 여겼다.
- 그 블레셋 사람은 다윗에게 "막대기를 들고 나에게로 나아오다니, 네가 나를 개로 여기는 것이냐?" 하고 묻고는, 자기 신들의 이름으로 다윗을 저주하였다.
- 그 블레셋 사람이 다윗에게 말하였다. "어서 내 앞으로 오너라. 내가 너의 살점을 공중의 새와 들짐승의 밥으로 만들어 주마."
- 그러자 다윗이 그 블레셋 사람에게 말하였다. "너는 칼을 차고 창을 메고 투창을 들고 나에게로 나왔으나, 나는 네가 모욕하는 이스라엘 군대의 하나님 곧 만군의 주님의 이름을 의지하고 너에게로 나왔다.

- This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
- And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.
- And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
- And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
- So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

- 주님께서 너를 나의 손에 넘겨 주실 터이니, 내가 오늘 너를 쳐서 네 머리를 베고, 블레셋 사람의 주검을 모조리 공중의 새와 땅의 들짐승에게 밥으로 주어서, 온 세상이 이스라엘의 하나님을 알게 하겠다.
- 또 주님께서는 칼이나 창 따위를 쓰셔서 구원하시는 것이 아니라는 것을, 여기에 모인 이 온 무리가 알게 하겠다. 전쟁에서 이기고 지는 것은 주님께 달린 것이다. 주님께서 너희를 모조리 우리 손에 넘겨 주실 것이다."
- 드디어 그 블레셋 사람이 몸을 움직여 다윗에게 점점 가까이 다가오자, 다윗은 재빠르게 그 블레셋 사람이 서 있는 대열 쪽으로 달려가면서,
- 주머니에 손을 넣어 돌을 하나 꺼낸 다음, 그 돌을 무릿매로 던져서, 그 블레셋 사람의 이마를 맞히었다. 골리앗이 이마에 돌을 맞고 땅바닥에 쓰러졌다.
- 이렇게 다윗은 무릿매와 돌 하나로 그 블레셋 사람을 이겼다. 그는 칼도 들고 가지 않고 그 블레셋 사람을 죽였다.

- Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
- And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.
- And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.
- And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
- And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.

- 다윗이 달려가서, 그 블레셋 사람을 밟고 서서, 그의 칼집에서 칼을 빼어 그의 목을 잘라 죽였다. 블레셋 군인들은 자기들의 장수가 이렇게 죽는 것을 보자 모두 달아났다.
- 이스라엘과 유다 사람들이 일어나 함성을 지르며 블레셋 사람들을 쫓아서, 가이를 지나 에그론 성문에까지 이르렀다. 그리하여 칼에 찔려 죽은 블레셋 사람의 주검이, 사아라임에서 가드와 에그론에 이르기까지 온 길에 널렸다.
- 이스라엘 자손은 블레셋 군대를 쫓다가 돌아와서, 블레셋 군대의 진을 약탈하였다.
- 다윗은, 그 블레셋 사람의 머리는 예루살렘으로 가지고 갔으나, 그의 무기들은 자기 장막에 간직하였다.
- 사울은, 다윗이 그 블레셋 사람에 맞서서 나가는 것을 보면서, 군사령관 아브넬에게 물었다. "아브넬 장군, 저 소년이 누구의 아들이오?" 아브넬이 대답하였다. "임금님, 황공하오나 저도 잘 모릅니다."

- And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.
- And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
- And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.

- 왕이 명령하였다. "저 젊은이가 누구의 아들인지 직접 알아보시오."
- 마침내 다윗이 그 블레셋 사람을 죽이고 돌아오자, 아브넬이 그를 데리고 사울 앞으로 갔다. 다윗의 손에는 여전히 그 블레셋 사람의 머리가 들려 있었다.
- 사울이 다윗에게 물었다. "너는 누구의 아들이냐?" 다윗이 대답하였다. "베들레헴 사람, 임금님의 종 이새의 아들입니다."
