	예레미야 37:1-38:28 시드기야가 왕위에 오른 후, 애굽의 군대가 예루살렘에 진격해 오자 바벨론 군대가 일시적으로 철수하였다. 시드기야 왕은 이 상황을 바벨론으로부터 유다가 구원받는 절호의 기회로 보고 예레미야에게 기도를 요청했다. 그러나 예레미야는 다시 바벨론이 침공할 것이라고 예언했다. 이로 인해 예레미야는 구덩이에 갇히게 되었지만 아벳멜렉에 의해 구출받았다. 시드기야 왕은 비밀리에 예레미야를 만나 바벨론에 항복할 것을 권고받지만 예레미야의 경고를 듣지 않았다.

	시드기야와 예레미야(37:1-37:21)

And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.

But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the LORD, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.

And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the LORD our God for us.

Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.

Then Pharaoh's army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

바빌로니아 왕 느부갓네살은 여호야김의 아들 고니야를 대신하여 요시야의 아들 시드기야를 유다 땅의 왕으로 앉혔다.

그런데 왕이나 그의 신하들이나 그 땅의 백성이나 할 것 없이 모두가, 주님께서 예언자 예레미야를 보내셔서 전한 말씀에 순종하지 않았다.

그 때에 시드기야 왕이 셀레먀의 아들 여후갈과 마아세야의 아들 제사장 스바냐를 예언자 예레미야에게 보내어서, 자기들을 도와 그들의 주 하나님께 기도를 드려 달라고 청하였다.

그 때는 예레미야가 아직 감옥에 갇히지 않았기 때문에 그 백성 사이에서 자유롭게 활동하던 때였으며,

바로의 군대가 이미 이집트에서 출동했고, 예루살렘을 포위했던 바빌로니아 군인들은 그 소식을 듣고 예루살렘에서 퇴각한 때였다.

Then came the word of the LORD unto the prophet Jeremiah saying,

Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh's army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.

And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.

Thus saith the LORD; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.

For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

그 때에 주님께서 예언자 예레미야에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다.

"나 주 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. 너희를 보내어 나에게 물어 보도록 한 유다 왕에게 너희는 이렇게 전하여라. '너희를 도우려고 출동한 바로의 군대는 제 나라 이집트로 돌아갈 것이다.

그러나 바빌로니아 군대는 다시 와서 이 도성을 공격하여 점령하고 불질러 버릴 것이다.

나 주가 말한다. 너희는 바빌로니아 군대가 틀림없이 너희에게서 떠나갈 것이라고 생각함으로써, 너희 자신을 속이지 말아라. 그들은 절대로 철수하지 않을 것이다.

너희를 공격하는 바빌로니아 군대 전체를 너희가 물리쳐서 오직 부상병들만 남긴다 하여도, 그들은 각자의 장막에서 떨치고 일어나 나와서, 이 도성을 불질러 버릴 것이다.'"

And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,

Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.

And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.

Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.

Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

바빌로니아 군대가 바로의 군대 때문에 예루살렘에서 철수하였을 때에,

예레미야는 집안의 상속재산을 물려받을 일이 있어서, 예루살렘을 떠나 베냐민 땅으로 가려고 길을 떠났다.

그가 '베냐민 문'에 이르렀을 때에, 그 곳에 한 수문장이 있었는데, 그는 하나냐의 손자이며 셀레먀의 아들로서, 이리야라고 하는 사람이었다. 그가 예언자 예레미야를 붙들고 말하였다. "당신은 지금 바빌로니아 군인들에게 투항하러 가고 있소."

이 말을 듣고, 예레미야가 "그렇지 않소. 나는 바빌로니아 진영으로 투항하러 가는 사람이 아니오" 하고 해명하였으나, 이리야는 그 말을 듣지 않고, 예레미야를 체포하여 고관들에게로 데려갔다.

고관들은 예레미야에게 화를 내며, 그를 때린 다음에, 서기관 요나단의 관저에 있는 구치소에 예레미야를 감금시켰다. 그 때에는 그 집이 감옥으로 사용되었기 때문이다.

When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?

Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?

Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

그 곳에는 지하 감옥이 있었는데, 예레미야는 거기에 들어가서 오랫동안 갇혀 있었다.

하루는 시드기야 왕이 사람을 보내어, 예레미야를 왕궁으로 데려와서, 그에게 은밀히 물어 보았다. "주님께서 무슨 말씀을 하신 것이 없습니까?" 그 때에 예레미야가 대답하였다. "있습니다." 예레미야가 계속해서 말하였다. "임금님께서는 바빌로니아 왕의 손아귀에 들어가실 것입니다."

예레미야는 시드기야 왕에게 호소하였다. "제가 임금님이나 임금님의 신하들에게나 이 백성에게 무슨 죄를 지었다고 저를 감옥에 가두어 두십니까?

바빌로니아 왕이 우리 나라를 치러 오지 않을 것이라고 임금님께 예언하던 임금님의 예언자들은, 지금 어디에 있습니까?

그러니 이제 부디 저의 소원을 들어주시기 바랍니다. 높으신 임금님, 부디 저의 간구를 받아 주셔서, 저를 다시 서기관 요나단의 집으로 돌려보내지 말아 주십시오. 거기에 가면 살아 나올 수 없습니다."

Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

시드기야 왕은 사람들에게 명령을 내려, 예레미야를 근위대 뜰에 가두고, 그 도성에서 양식이 모두 떨어질 때까지 빵 만드는 사람들의 거리에서 빵을 매일 한 덩이씩 가져다가 예레미야에게 주게 하였다. 이렇게 해서, 예레미야는 근위대 뜰 안에서 지내게 되었다.

	살아난 예레미야(38:1-38:28)

Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,

Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.

Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which shall take it.

Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.

맛단의 아들 스바댜와 바스훌의 아들 그달리야와 셀레먀의 아들 유갈과 말기야의 아들 바스훌이, 예레미야가 온 백성에게 이렇게 전하는 말씀을 들었다.

"나 주가 말한다. 이 도성 안에 머물러 있는 사람은 전쟁이나 기근이나 염병으로 죽을 것이다. 그러나 바빌로니아 군인들에게 나아가서 항복하는 사람은 죽지 않을 것이다. 적어도 자기의 목숨만은 건질 것이며, 계속 살아 남게 될 것이다.

나 주가 말한다. 이 도성은 반드시 바빌로니아 왕의 군대에게 넘어간다. 그들이 이 도성을 점령한다."

대신들이 왕에게 말하였다. "이 사람은 마땅히 사형에 처해야 합니다. 그가 이런 말을 해서, 아직도 이 도성에 남아 있는 군인들의 사기와 온 백성의 사기를 떨어뜨리고 있습니다. 이 사람은 참으로 이 백성의 평안을 구하지 않고, 오히려 재앙을 재촉하고 있습니다."

시드기야 왕이 대답하였다. "그가 여기에 있소. 죽이든 살리든 그대들 뜻대로 하시오. 나에게 무슨 힘이 있다고 그대들에게 반대하겠소."

Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;

Ebedmelech went forth out of the king's house, and spake to the king saying,

My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.

Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

그래서 그 고관들이 예레미야를 붙잡아서, 왕자 말기야의 집에 있는 물웅덩이에 집어 넣었다. 그 웅덩이는 근위대의 뜰 안에 있었으며, 사람들은 예레미야를 밧줄에 매달아 웅덩이 속으로 내려 보냈는데, 그 물웅덩이 속에는 물은 없고, 진흙만 있어서, 예레미야는 진흙 속에 빠져 있었다.

왕궁에 에티오피아 사람으로 에벳멜렉이라고 하는 한 환관이 있었는데, 그는, 사람들이 예레미야를 물웅덩이에 집어 넣었다는 소식을 들었다. 그 때에 왕은 '베냐민 문' 안에 머물러 있었다.

에벳멜렉은 왕궁에서 바깥으로 나와 왕에게 가서, 이렇게 아뢰었다.

"높으신 임금님, 저 사람들이 예언자 예레미야에게 한 일들은 모두 악한 것뿐입니다. 그들이 예레미야를 물웅덩이 속에 집어 넣었으니, 그가 그 속에서 굶어 죽을 것입니다. 이래서야 되겠습니까? 성 안에는 더 이상 먹을 것이 없습니다."

그 때에 왕은 에티오피아 사람 에벳멜렉에게 이렇게 명령하였다. "너는 여기 있는 군인들 가운데서 삼십 명을 데리고 가서, 예언자 예레미야가 죽기 전에, 어서 그를 그 물웅덩이 속에서 끌어올려라."

So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

And Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.

Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me?

에벳멜렉이 그 사람들을 데리고 왕궁의 의복 창고로 들어가서, 해어지고 찢어진 옷조각들을 거기에서 꺼내다가, 밧줄에 매달아서, 물웅덩이 속에 있는 예레미야에게 내려 주었다.

에티오피아 사람 에벳멜렉이 예레미야에게 말하였다. "해어지고 찢어진 옷조각들을 양쪽 겨드랑이 밑에 대고, 밧줄에 매달리십시오." 예레미야가 그대로 하였다.

사람들이 밧줄을 끌어당겨서 예레미야를 물웅덩이 속에서 끌어올렸다. 이렇게 해서, 예레미야는 근위대 뜰 안에서 지내게 되었다.

시드기야 왕은 사람을 보내어서, 예언자 예레미야를 주님의 성전 셋째 문 어귀로 데려왔다. 그리고 왕은 예레미야에게 말하였다. "내가 그대에게 한 가지를 묻겠으니, 아무것도 나에게 숨기지 마시오."

그러자 예레미야가 시드기야에게 대답하였다. "제가 만일 숨김없이 말씀드린다면, 임금님께서는 저를 죽이실 것입니다. 또 제가 임금님께 말씀을 드려도, 임금님께서는 저의 말을 들어주시지 않을 것입니다."

So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:

But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.

시드기야 왕은 예레미야에게 이렇게 은밀히 맹세하였다. "우리에게 목숨을 주신 주님의 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하오. 나는 그대를 죽이지도 않고, 그대의 목숨을 노리는 저 사람들의 손에 넘겨 주지도 않겠소."

그러자 예레미야가 시드기야에게 말하였다. "주 만군의 하나님, 이스라엘의 하나님께서 임금님에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다. '너는 바빌로니아 왕의 고관들에게 항복하여야 한다. 그러면 너는 너의 목숨을 구하고, 이 도성은 불에 타지 않을 것이다. 그리고 너와 너의 집안이 모두 살아 남게 될 것이다.

그러나 네가 바빌로니아 왕의 고관들에게 항복하지 않으면, 이 도성이 바빌로니아 군대의 손아귀에 들어가고, 그들은 이 도성에 불을 지를 것이고, 너는 그들의 손에서 벗어날 수가 없을 것이다.'"

그런데도 시드기야 왕은 예레미야에게 이렇게 대답하였다. "나는 바빌로니아 군대에게 투항한 유다 사람들이 두렵소. 바빌로니아 군대가 나를 그들의 손에 넘겨 주면, 그들이 나를 학대할지도 모르지 않소?"

예레미야가 말하였다. "그들의 손에 넘어가지 않을 것입니다. 부디 제가 임금님께 전하여 드린 주님의 말씀에 순종하십시오. 그래야 임금님께서 형통하시고, 임금님의 목숨도 구하실 것입니다.

But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD hath shewed me:

And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.

So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.

Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:

그러나 임금님께서 항복하기를 거부하시면, 주님께서 저에게 보여 주신 일들이 그대로 일어날 것입니다.

보십시오, 유다의 왕궁에 남아 있는 여인들이 모두 바빌로니아 왕의 고관들에게로 끌려가면서 이렇게 탄식할 것입니다. '믿던 도끼에 발 찍혔다. 친구들이 너를 속이고 멋대로 하다가, 네가 진창에 빠지니, 너를 버리고 떠났다.'

임금님의 모든 아내와 자녀들도 바빌로니아 군대에 끌려갈 것이고, 임금님께서도 그들의 손에서 벗어나지 못하고, 바빌로니아 왕의 손에 붙잡히실 것입니다. 그리고 이 도성도 불에 타버릴 것입니다."

그런데도 시드기야는 예레미야에게 이렇게 말하는 것이었다. "이런 이야기를 아무에게도 발설하지 마시오. 그렇지 않으면 그대는 목숨을 부지하지 못할 것이오.

나하고 이야기했다는 것을 고관들이 알면, 그들이 그대에게 와서, 나하고 무슨 말을 하였으며, 또 내가 무슨 말을 하였는지 자기들에게 사실대로 말하라고 할 것이오. 그들이 그대를 죽이지 않겠다고 하면서 아무것도 숨기지 말고 말하라고 할 것이오. 그러면

Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.

Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

그대는, 그대가 요나단의 집으로 돌아가면 죽게 될 터이니, 그 곳으로 돌려보내지 말아 달라고 임금님에게 간청하였다고만 대답하시오."

과연 고관들이 모두 예레미야에게 와서 물어 보았다. 그 때에 예레미야는 왕이 자기에게 명령한 그 말대로만 그들에게 대답하였다. 그 이야기의 내용은 전혀 탄로나지 않았고, 대신들은 예레미야에게 더 이상 할 말이 없었다.

이렇게 해서, 예레미야는 예루살렘이 함락되는 날까지 근위대 뜰 안에 머물러 있게 되었다.

	음실(陰室, 37:16) 본래 ‘무덤’을 뜻하나, 여기서는 어둡고 더러운 지하 감옥을 가리킴
