  1. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
  2. And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
  3. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
  4. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
  5. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
  1. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
  2. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
  3. We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.
  4. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
  5. But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:
  1. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
  2. Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
  3. Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
  4. He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
  5. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
  1. Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
  2. Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.
  3. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
  4. Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.
  5. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.
  1. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
  2. I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
  3. I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
  4. I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
  5. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
  1. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.
  2. I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
  3. I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father.
  4. I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
  5. Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
  1. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
  2. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
  1. For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world.
  2. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
