- And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.
- Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
- And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
- And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
- And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

- そののち， 間もなく， ナイン という 町へおいでになったが， 弟子たちや 大ぜいの 群衆も 一緖に 行った．
- 町の 門に 近づかれると， ちょうど， あるやもめにとってひとりむすこであった 者が 死んだので， 葬りに 出すところであった． 大ぜいの 町の 人たちが， その 母につきそっていた．
- 主はこの 婦人を 見て 深い 同情を 寄せられ， 「泣かないでいなさい 」と 言われた．
- そして 近寄って 棺に 手をかけられると， かついでいる 者たちが 立ち 止まったので， 「若者よ， さあ， 起きなさい 」と 言われた．
- すると， 死人が 起き 上がって 物を 言い 出した． イエス は 彼をその 母にお 渡しになった．

- And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
- And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.
- And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.
- And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
- When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

- 人¿はみな 恐れをいだき， 「大預言者がわたしたちの 間に 現れた 」， また， 「神はその 民を 顧みてくださった 」と 言って， 神をほめたたえた．
- イエス についてのこの 話は， ユダヤ 全土およびその 附近のいたる 所にひろまった．
- ヨハネ の 弟子たちは， これらのことを 全部彼に 報告した． すると ヨハネ は 弟子の 中からふたりの 者を 呼んで，
- 主のもとに 送り， 「『きたるべきかた 』はあなたなのですか． それとも， ほかにだれかを 待つべきでしょうか 」と 尋ねさせた．
- そこで， この 人たちが イエス のもとにきて 言った， 「わたしたちは バプテスマ の ヨハネ からの 使ですが， 『きたるべきかた 』はあなたなのですか， それとも， ほかにだれかを 待つべきでしょうか， と ヨハネ が 尋ねています 」．

- And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
- Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
- And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
- And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
- But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.

- そのとき， イエス はさまざまの 病苦と 惡靈とに 惱む 人¿をいやし， また 多くの 盲人を 見えるようにしておられたが，
- 答えて 言われた， 「行って， あなたがたが 見聞きしたことを， ヨハネ に 報告しなさい． 盲人は 見え， 足なえは 步き， らい 病人はきよまり， 耳しいは 聞え， 死人は 生きかえり， 貧しい 人¿は 福音を 聞かされている．
- わたしにつまずかない 者は， さいわいである 」．
- ヨハネ の 使が 行ってしまうと， イエス は ヨハネ のことを 群衆に 語りはじめられた， 「あなたがたは， 何を 見に 荒野に 出てきたのか． 風に ¿らぐ 葦であるか．
- では， 何を 見に 出てきたのか． 柔らかい 着物をまとった 人か． きらびやかに 着かざって， ぜいたくに 暮している 人¿なら， 宮殿にいる．

- But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
- This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
- For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
- And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
- But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

- では， 何を 見に 出てきたのか． 預言者か． そうだ， あなたがたに 言うが， 預言者以上の 者である．
- 『見よ， わたしは 使をあなたの 先につかわし， あなたの 前に， 道を 整えさせるであろう 』と 書いてあるのは， この 人のことである．
- あなたがたに 言っておく． 女の 産んだ 者の 中で， ヨハネ より 大きい 人物はいない． しかし， 神の 國で 最も 小さい 者も， 彼よりは 大きい．
- （これを 聞いた 民衆は 皆， また 取稅人たちも， ヨハネ の バプテスマ を 受けて 神の 正しいことを 認めた．
- しかし， パリサイ 人と 律法學者たちとは 彼から バプテスマ を 受けないで， 自分たちに 對する 神のみこころを 無にした． ）

- And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
- They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
- For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
- The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
- But wisdom is justified of all her children.

- だから 今の 時代の 人¿を 何に 比べようか． 彼らは 何に 似ているか．
- それは 子供たちが 廣場にすわって， 互に 呼びかけ， 『わたしたちが 笛を 吹いたのに， あなたたちは 踊ってくれなかった． 弔いの 歌を 歌ったのに， 泣いてくれなかった 』と 言うのに 似ている．
- なぜなら， バプテスマ の ヨハネ がきて， パン を 食べることも， ぶどう 酒を 飮むこともしないと， あなたがたは， あれは 惡靈につかれているのだ， と 言い，
- また 人の 子がきて 食べたり 飮んだりしていると， 見よ， あれは 食をむさぼる 者， 大酒を 飮む 者， また 取稅人， 罪人の 仲間だ， と 言う．
- しかし， 知惠の 正しいことは， そのすべての 子が 證明する 」．
