- When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt;
- Then Jethro, Moses' father in law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,
- And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:
- And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:
- And Jethro, Moses' father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:

- モ ― セ のしゅうとで， ミディアン の 祭司である エトロ は， 神が モ ― セ とその 民 イスラエル のためになされたすべてのこと， すなわち， 主が イスラエル を エジプト から 導き 出されたことを 聞いた．
- モ ― セ のしゅうと エトロ は， モ ― セ が 先に 歸していた 妻の ツィポラ と，
- 二人の 息子を 連れて 來た． 一人は， モ ― セ が， 「わたしは 異國にいる 寄留者だ 」と 言って， ゲルショム と 名付け，
- もう 一人は， 「わたしの 父の 神はわたしの 助け， ファラオ の 劍からわたしを 救われた 」と 言って， エリエゼル と 名付けた．
- モ ― セ のしゅうと エトロ は， モ ― セ の 息子たちと 妻を 連れて 荒れ 野に 行き， 神の 山に 宿營している モ ― セ のところに 行った．

- And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.
- And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.
- And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.
- And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.
- And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

- 彼は モ ― セ に， 「あなたのしゅうとであるわたし， エトロ があなたの 妻と 二人の 子供を 連れて 來た 」と 傳えると，
- モ ― セ は 出て 來てしゅうとを 迎え， 身をかがめて 口づけした． 彼らは 互いに 安否を 尋ね 合ってから， 天幕の 中に 入った．

- エトロ は， 主が イスラエル を エジプト 人の 手から 救い 出し， 彼らに 惠みを 與えられたことを 喜んで，
- 言った． 「主をたたえよ ／主はあなたたちを エジプト 人の 手から ／ ファラオ の 手から 救い 出された． 主は エジプト 人のもとから 民を 救い 出された．

- Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.
- And Jethro, Moses' father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father in law before God.
- And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.
- And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?
- And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:

- 今， わたしは 知った ／彼らが イスラエル に 向かって ／高慢にふるまったときにも ／主はすべての 神¿にまさって 偉大であったことを． 」
- モ ― セ のしゅうと エトロ は 燒き 盡くす 獻げ 物といけにえを 神にささげた． アロン と イスラエル の 長老たちも 皆來て， モ ― セ のしゅうとと 共に 神の 御前で 食事をした．
- 翌日になって， モ ― セ は 座に 着いて 民を 裁いたが， 民は 朝から 晩まで モ ― セ の 裁きを 待って ¿んでいた．
- モ ― セ のしゅうとは， 彼が 民のために 行っているすべてのことを 見て， 「あなたが 民のためにしているこのやり 方はどうしたことか． なぜ， あなた 一人だけが 座に 着いて， 民は 朝から 晩まであなたの 裁きを 待って ¿んでいるのか 」と 尋ねた．
- モ ― セ はしゅうとに， 「民は， 神に 問うためにわたしのところに 來るのです．

- When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.
- And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.
- Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
- Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:
- And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

- 彼らの 間に 何か 事件が 起こると， わたしのところに 來ますので， わたしはそれぞれの 間を 裁き， また， 神の ¿と 指示とを 知らせるのです 」と 答えた．
- モ ― セ のしゅうとは 言った． 「あなたのやり 方は 良くない．
- あなた 自身も， あなたを 訪ねて 來る 民も， きっと 疲れ 果ててしまうだろう． このやり 方ではあなたの 荷が 重すぎて， 一人では 負いきれないからだ．
- わたしの 言うことを 聞きなさい． 助言をしよう． 神があなたと 共におられるように． あなたが 民に 代わって 神の 前に 立って 事件について 神に 述べ，
- 彼らに ¿と 指示を 示して， 彼らの 步むべき 道となすべき 事を 敎えなさい．

- Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
- And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
- If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
- So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.
- And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

- あなたは， 民全員の 中から， 神を 畏れる 有能な 人で， 不正な 利得を 憎み， 信賴に 値する 人物を ／選び， 千人隊長， 百人隊長， 五十人隊長， 十人隊長として 民の 上に 立てなさい．
- 平素は 彼らに 民を 裁かせ， 大きな 事件があったときだけ， あなたのもとに 持って 來させる． 小さな 事件は 彼ら 自身で 裁かせ， あなたの 負擔を 輕くし， あなたと 共に 彼らに 分擔させなさい．
- もし， あなたがこのやり 方を 實行し， 神があなたに 命令を 與えてくださるならば， あなたは 任に 堪えることができ， この 民も 皆， 安心して 自分の 所へ 歸ることができよう． 」
- モ ― セ はしゅうとの 言うことを 聞き 入れ， その 勸めのとおりにし，
- 全 イスラエル の 中から 有能な 人¿を 選び， 彼らを 民の 長， すなわち， 千人隊長， 百人隊長， 五十人隊長， 十人隊長とした．

- And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.
- And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

- こうして， 平素は 彼らが 民を 裁いた． 難しい 事件は モ ― セ のもとに 持って 來たが， 小さい 事件はすべて， 彼ら 自身が 裁いた．
- しゅうとは モ ― セ に 送られて， 自分の 國に 歸って 行った．
