- Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
- Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
- It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
- That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
- THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

- -2 わたしたちの 間で 實現した 事柄について， 最初から 目擊して 御言葉のために ¿いた 人¿がわたしたちに 傳えたとおりに， 物語を 書き 連ねようと， 多くの 人¿が 旣に 手を 着けています．

- そこで， 敬愛する テオフィロ さま， わたしもすべての 事を 初めから 詳しく 調べていますので， 順序正しく 書いてあなたに 獻呈するのがよいと 思いました．
- お 受けになった 敎えが 確實なものであることを， よく 分かっていただきたいのであります．
- ユダヤ の 王 ヘロデ の 時代， アビヤ 組の 祭司に ザカリア という 人がいた． その 妻は アロン 家の 娘の 一人で， 名を エリサベト といった．

- And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
- And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
- And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
- According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
- And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

- 二人とも 神の 前に 正しい 人で， 主の ¿と 定めをすべて 守り， 非のうちどころがなかった．
- しかし， エリサベト は 不妊の 女だったので， 彼らには， 子供がなく， 二人とも 旣に 年をとっていた．
- さて， ザカリア は 自分の 組が 當番で， 神の 御前で 祭司の 務めをしていたとき，
- 祭司職のしきたりによってくじを 引いたところ， 主の 聖所に 入って 香をたくことになった．
- 香をたいている 間， 大勢の 民衆が 皆外で 祈っていた．

- And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
- And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
- But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
- And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
- For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

- すると， 主の 天使が 現れ， 香壇の 右に 立った．
- ザカリア はそれを 見て 不安になり， 恐怖の 念に 襲われた．
- 天使は 言った． 「恐れることはない． ザカリア ， あなたの 願いは 聞き 入れられた． あなたの 妻 エリサベト は 男の 子を 産む． その 子を ヨハネ と 名付けなさい．
- その 子はあなたにとって 喜びとなり， 樂しみとなる． 多くの 人もその 誕生を 喜ぶ．
- 彼は 主の 御前に 偉大な 人になり， ぶどう 酒や 强い 酒を 飮まず， 旣に 母の 胎にいるときから 聖靈に 滿たされていて，

- And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
- And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
- And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
- And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
- And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

- イスラエル の 多くの 子らをその 神である 主のもとに 立ち 歸らせる．
- 彼は エリヤ の 靈と 力で 主に 先立って 行き， 父の 心を 子に 向けさせ， 逆らう 者に 正しい 人の 分別を 持たせて， 準備のできた 民を 主のために 用意する． 」
- そこで， ザカリア は 天使に 言った． 「何によって， わたしはそれを 知ることができるのでしょうか． わたしは 老人ですし， 妻も 年をとっています． 」
- 天使は 答えた． 「わたしは ガブリエル ， 神の 前に 立つ 者． あなたに 話しかけて， この 喜ばしい 知らせを 傳えるために 遣わされたのである．
- あなたは 口が 利けなくなり， この 事の 起こる 日まで 話すことができなくなる． 時が 來れば 實現するわたしの 言葉を 信じなかったからである． 」

- And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
- And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
- And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
- And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
- Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

- 民衆は ザカリア を 待っていた． そして， 彼が 聖所で 手間取るのを， 不思議に 思っていた．
- ザカリア はやっと 出て 來たけれども， 話すことができなかった． そこで， 人¿は 彼が 聖所で 幻を 見たのだと 悟った． ザカリア は 身振りで 示すだけで， 口が 利けないままだった．
- やがて， 務めの 期間が 終わって 自分の 家に 歸った．
- その 後， 妻 エリサベト は 身ごもって， 五か 月の 間身を 隱していた． そして， こう 言った．
- 「主は 今こそ， こうして， わたしに 目を 留め， 人¿の 間からわたしの 恥を 取り 去ってくださいました． 」
