- This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
- A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
- Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
- One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
- (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

- この 言葉は 眞實です． 「監督の 職を 求める 人がいれば， その 人は 良い 仕事を 望んでいる． 」
- だから， 監督は， 非のうちどころがなく， 一人の 妻の 夫であり， 節制し， 分別があり， 禮儀正しく， 客を 親切にもてなし， よく 敎えることができなければなりません．
- また， 酒におぼれず， 亂暴でなく， 寬容で， 爭いを 好まず， 金錢に 執着せず，
- 自分の 家庭をよく 治め， 常に 品位を 保って 子供たちを 從順な 者に 育てている 人でなければなりません．
- 自分の 家庭を 治めることを 知らない 者に， どうして 神の 敎會の 世話ができるでしょうか．
