  1. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
  2. Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.
  3. And when they shall blow with them, all the assembly shall assemble themselves to thee at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
  4. And if they blow but with one trumpet, then the princes, which are heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves unto thee.
  5. When ye blow an alarm, then the camps that lie on the east parts shall go forward.
  1. The LORD said to Moses:
  2. "Make two trumpets of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community together and for having the camps set out.
  3. When both are sounded, the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
  4. If only one is sounded, the leaders--the heads of the clans of Israel--are to assemble before you.
  5. When a trumpet blast is sounded, the tribes camping on the east are to set out.
  1. When ye blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys.
  2. But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm.
  3. And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations.
  4. And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.
  5. Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the LORD your God.
  1. At the sounding of a second blast, the camps on the south are to set out. The blast will be the signal for setting out.
  2. To gather the assembly, blow the trumpets, but not with the same signal.
  3. "The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to blow the trumpets. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come.
  4. When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you, sound a blast on the trumpets. Then you will be remembered by the LORD your God and rescued from your enemies.
  5. Also at your times of rejoicing--your appointed feasts and New Moon festivals--you are to sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the LORD your God."
  1. And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the tabernacle of the testimony.
  2. And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.
  3. And they first took their journey according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
  4. In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Judah according to their armies: and over his host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab.
  5. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethaneel the son of Zuar.
  1. On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle of the Testimony.
  2. Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran.
  3. They set out, this first time, at the LORD's command through Moses.
  4. The divisions of the camp of Judah went first, under their standard. Nahshon son of Amminadab was in command.
  5. Nethanel son of Zuar was over the division of the tribe of Issachar,
  1. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon.
  2. And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set forward, bearing the tabernacle.
  3. And the standard of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elizur the son of Shedeur.
  4. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.
  5. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.
  1. and Eliab son of Helon was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun.
  2. Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, set out.
  3. The divisions of the camp of Reuben went next, under their standard. Elizur son of Shedeur was in command.
  4. Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the division of the tribe of Simeon,
  5. and Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the division of the tribe of Gad.
  1. And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and the other did set up the tabernacle against they came.
  2. And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud.
  3. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.
  4. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni.
  5. And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan set forward, which was the rereward of all the camps throughout their hosts: and over his host was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.
  1. Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy things. The tabernacle was to be set up before they arrived.
  2. The divisions of the camp of Ephraim went next, under their standard. Elishama son of Ammihud was in command.
  3. Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of Manasseh,
  4. and Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of Benjamin.
  5. Finally, as the rear guard for all the units, the divisions of the camp of Dan set out, under their standard. Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai was in command.
  1. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ocran.
  2. And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan.
  3. Thus were the journeyings of the children of Israel according to their armies, when they set forward.
  4. And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.
  5. And he said unto him, I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred.
  1. Pagiel son of Ocran was over the division of the tribe of Asher,
  2. and Ahira son of Enan was over the division of the tribe of Naphtali.
  3. This was the order of march for the Israelite divisions as they set out.
  4. Now Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law, "We are setting out for the place about which the LORD said, 'I will give it to you.' Come with us and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised good things to Israel."
  5. He answered, "No, I will not go; I am going back to my own land and my own people."
  1. And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayest be to us instead of eyes.
  2. And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what goodness the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.
  3. And they departed from the mount of the LORD three days' journey: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them.
  4. And the cloud of the LORD was upon them by day, when they went out of the camp.
  5. And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee.
  1. But Moses said, "Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the desert, and you can be our eyes.
  2. If you come with us, we will share with you whatever good things the LORD gives us."
  3. So they set out from the mountain of the LORD and traveled for three days. The ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest.
  4. The cloud of the LORD was over them by day when they set out from the camp.
  5. Whenever the ark set out, Moses said, "Rise up, O LORD! May your enemies be scattered; may your foes flee before you."
  1. And when it rested, he said, Return, O LORD, unto the many thousands of Israel.
  1. Whenever it came to rest, he said, "Return, O LORD, to the countless thousands of Israel."

  1. And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.
  2. And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched.
  3. And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.
  4. And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?
  5. We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:
  1. Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the LORD, and when he heard them his anger was aroused. Then fire from the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.
  2. When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the LORD and the fire died down.
  3. So that place was called Taberah, because fire from the LORD had burned among them.
  4. The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, "If only we had meat to eat!
  5. We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost--also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.
  1. But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.
  2. And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.
  3. And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.
  4. And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.
  5. Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.
  1. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!"
  2. The manna was like coriander seed and looked like resin.
  3. The people went around gathering it, and then ground it in a handmill or crushed it in a mortar. They cooked it in a pot or made it into cakes. And it tasted like something made with olive oil.
  4. When the dew settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down.
  5. Moses heard the people of every family wailing, each at the entrance to his tent. The LORD became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled.
  1. And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?
  2. Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?
  3. Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.
  4. I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.
  5. And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.
  1. He asked the LORD, "Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me?
  2. Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant, to the land you promised on oath to their forefathers?
  3. Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep wailing to me, 'Give us meat to eat!'
  4. I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me.
  5. If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right now--if I have found favor in your eyes--and do not let me face my own ruin."
  1. And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.
  2. And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.
  3. And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.
  4. Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;
  5. But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?
  1. The LORD said to Moses: "Bring me seventy of Israel's elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have them come to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you.
  2. I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of the Spirit that is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you carry the burden of the people so that you will not have to carry it alone.
  3. "Tell the people: 'Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The LORD heard you when you wailed, "If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!" Now the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat it.
  4. You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days,
  5. but for a whole month--until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it--because you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, "Why did we ever leave Egypt?" ' "
  1. And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.
  2. Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?
  3. And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD's hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.
  1. But Moses said, "Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, 'I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!'
  2. Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?"
  3. The LORD answered Moses, "Is the LORD's arm too short? You will now see whether or not what I say will come true for you."
