  1. After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
  2. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
  3. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
  4. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
  5. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
  1. After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
  2. Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes.
  3. In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [waiting for the moving of the waters;
  4. for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.]
  5. A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.
  1. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
  2. The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
  3. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
  4. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
  5. The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
  1. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, "Do you wish to get well?"
  2. The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me."
  3. Jesus said to him, "Get up, pick up your pallet and walk."
  4. Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. Now it was the Sabbath on that day.
  5. So the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, "It is the Sabbath, and it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet."
  1. He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
  2. Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
  3. And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
  4. Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
  5. The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
  1. But he answered them, "He who made me well was the one who said to me, 'Pick up your pallet and walk.'"
  2. They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Pick up your pallet and walk'?"
  3. But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place.
  4. Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you."
  5. The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
  1. And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
  2. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
  3. Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
  1. For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.
  2. But He answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working."
  3. For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

  1. Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
  2. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
  3. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
  4. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
  5. That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
  1. Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.
  2. "For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel.
  3. "For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.
  4. "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,
  5. so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
  1. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
  2. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
  3. For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
  4. And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
  5. Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
  1. "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
  2. "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
  3. "For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;
  4. and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
  5. "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
  1. And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
  1. and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
