- Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.
- For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass.
- And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied.
- Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice.
- And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God,

- 이 일을 모두 마친 다음이었다. 백성의 지도자들이 찾아와서 나에게 밀고를 하였다. "이스라엘 백성은 사제나 레위인마저도 이 지방에 사는 여러 민족, 가나안족, 헷족, 브리즈족, 여부스족, 암몬족, 모압족, 이집트족, 아모리족과 관계를 끊지 않고 하느님께 역겨운 일을 그대로 하고 있습니다.
- 이민족들의 딸을 아내로 맞는가 하면 며느리를 삼기도 합니다. 그리하여 거룩한 씨가 이 땅의 여러 민족의 피와 섞이고 있습니다. 더군다나 지도자들과 관리라는 것들이 이런 짓에 앞장을 서고 있습니다."
- 나는 이 말을 듣고 겉옷과 속옷을 찢고 머리와 수염을 뜯으며 넋을 잃고 주저앉아 있었다.
- 그러나 이스라엘의 하느님께서 하신 말씀을 어렵게 아는 사람들도 있었다. 그들은 포로 생활까지 겪은 사람들이 이렇듯이 엄청난 배신을 하다니 될 말이냐고 분개하여 나에게 모여들었다. 나는 저녁 제사 때까지 그대로 넋을 잃고 있었다.
- 나는 너무 속이 상해서 겉옷과 속옷을 찢은 채 앉아 있다가 저녁 제사 때에 일어나 무릎을 꿇고 나의 하느님 야훼께 두 팔을 들고

- And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.
- Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
- And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.
- For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
- And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,

- 빌었다. "나의 하느님, 부끄럽고 송구스러워서 하느님 앞에서 감히 얼굴을 들 수가 없습니다. 우리의 죄악은 키를 넘었고 우리의 허물은 하늘에 닿았습니다.
- 일찍이 선조 때부터 이 날까지 우리가 저지른 허물이 너무 컸습니다. 우리는 못할 일을 하다가, 임금과 사제가 모조리 적국 왕들의 칼에 맞아 죽고 사로잡혀 가고 털렸습니다. 우리는 이 날까지 그 수모를 당하고 있습니다.
- 그러나 우리 하느님 야훼께서 이제 잠깐이나마 우리를 애처롭게 보아주셨습니다. 우리를 더러 살아 남게 해주셔서 다시 여기에 뿌리를 박도록 하여주셨습니다. 우리 하느님께서는 우리 앞을 환히 열어주셨습니다. 종살이하던 것들을 잠깐이나마 숨을 돌리도록 하여주셨습니다.
- 우리는 종살이하던 것들입니다. 그러던 우리를 하느님께서는 종살이하게 내버려두지 않으시고 페르시아 황제의 은총을 입어 한숨 돌리게 하여주셨습니다. 이렇게 우리 하느님의 성전을 세우고, 폐허가 된 유다와 예루살렘을 다시 세워 담을 치고 살게 되었습니다.
- 이런 은혜를 입고도 이제 또 하느님의 분부를 저버리다니, 무슨 할 말이 있겠습니까?

- Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.
- Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.
- And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;
- Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping?
- O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.

- 하느님께서는 일찍이 심복 예언자들을 시켜 분부하셨습니다. '너희가 가서 차지할 땅은 더럽혀진 땅이다. 여러 나라 족속들이 널려 살며 하느님께 역겨운 일을 하는 바람에 온 땅이 더럽혀졌다. 구석구석 부정을 타지 않은 곳이 없다.
- 그러니 이제 너희는 그들을 사위로 삼지도 말며 며느리로 맞지도 마라. 언제까지나 그들과 어울려 잘 지내도 되려니 하는 생각은 하지 마라. 그래야 너희는 강해져서 그 땅의 소출을 먹을 것이며 대대손손 언제까지나 그 땅을 물려주며 살게 되리라.'
- 이렇게 타일러주셨는데도, 우리는 못할 일만 해 왔습니다. 크나큰 죄를 지었습니다. 하느님께서 우리의 죄에 내리실 벌을 감해 주시고 이렇게 더러 살아 남게 해주셨지만, 우리는 무던히 당했습니다. 이런 일을 겪고도
- 다시 하느님의 분부를 어겼습니다. 하느님께서 역겹게 여기시는 이 족속들과 통혼하고 있습니다. 우리가 어찌 이럴 수가 있습니까? 노여우시어 씨도 없이 멸하신다 하여도 우리는 할 말이 없습니다.
- 야훼, 이스라엘의 하느님이여, 하느님께서 만일 너그럽지 않으셨던들 오늘 우리는 이렇게 살아 남지 못하였을 것입니다. 이런 죄를 지니고 어찌 하느님 앞에 나서겠습니까? 죄를 지닌 것들이기에 이렇게 하느님 앞에 엎드렸습니다."
