- Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
- And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
- But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
- As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
- For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)

- 이제는 우상 앞에 놓았던 제물에 관하여 말하겠습니다. "우리는 다 지식이 있다."고 여러분은 말하는데 사실 그렇습니다. 그러나 지식은 사람을 교만하게 만듭니다. 사람을 향상시켜 주는 것은 사랑입니다.
- 자기가 무엇을 좀 안다고 생각하는 사람이 있다면 그는 마땅히 알아야 할 것을 아직 알지 못하고 있는 것입니다.
- 그러나 하느님을 사랑하는 사람은 하느님께서도 그를 알아주십니다.
- 우상 앞에 놓았던 제물을 먹는 문제가 나왔지만 우리가 알고 있는 대로 세상에 있는 우상은 아무것도 아니고 또 하느님은 한 분밖에 안 계십니다.
- 남들은 하느님도 많고 주님도 많아서 소위 신이라는 것들이 하늘에도 있고 땅에도 있다고들 하지만

- But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
- Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
- But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
- But take heed lest by any means this liberty of your's become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
- For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;

- 우리에게는 아버지가 되시는 하느님 한 분이 계실 뿐입니다. 그분은 만물을 창조하신 분이며 우리는 그분을 위해서 있습니다. 또 주님은 예수 그리스도 한 분이 계실 뿐이고 그분을 통해서 만물이 존재하고 우리도 그분으로 말미암아 살아갑니다.
- 그러나 모든 사람이 다 이런 지식을 가지고 있는 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 교우들은 아직까지도 우상을 섬기던 관습에 젖어 있어서 우상에게 바쳤던 제물을 먹을 때는 그것이 참말로 우상의 것이라고 생각합니다. 그리고 그들의 양심이 약하기 때문에 그 음식으로 말미암아 자기들이 더럽혀졌다고 생각합니다.
- 음식이 우리를 하느님께로 가까이 나가게 해주는 것은 아닙니다. 그것을 안 먹었다고 해서 손해될 것도 없고 먹었다고 해서 더 이로울 것도 없습니다.
- 다만 여러분의 자유로운 행동이 믿음이 약한 사람을 넘어지게 하는 일이 없도록 조심하십시오.
- 지식이 있다는 여러분이 우상의 사당에 앉아 제물을 먹고 있는 것을 믿음이 약한 사람이 본다면 그는 양심에 꺼리면서도 용기를 얻어 가지고 우상의 제물을 먹게 되지 않겠습니까?

- And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
- But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
- Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

- 그렇게 되면 믿음이 약한 그 사람은 여러분의 그 지식 때문에 망하게 될 것입니다. 그리스도께서는 그 형제를 위해서도 죽으시지 않았습니까?
- 여러분이 이렇게 형제에게 죄를 짓고 그들의 약한 양심에 상처를 입히는 것은 결국 여러분이 그리스도께 죄를 짓는 것입니다.
- 만일 음식이 내 형제를 넘어뜨린다면 나는 그를 넘어뜨리지 않기 위해서 절대로 고기를 다시 입에 대지 않겠습니다.
