- Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
- Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
- It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
- That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
- THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

- ふたりとも， 神の 御前に 正しく， 主のすべての 戒めと 定めを 落度なく 踏み 行なっていた．

- And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
- And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
- And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
- According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
- And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

- ところが， 主の 使いが 彼に 現われて， 香壇の 右に 立った．
- これを 見た ザカリヤ は 不安を 覺え， 恐怖に 襲われたが，
- 御使いは 彼に 言った． 「こわがることはない． ザカリヤ ． あなたの 願いが 聞かれたのです． あなたの 妻 エリサベツ は 男の 子を 産みます． 名を ヨハネ とつけなさい．
- その 子はあなたにとって 喜びとなり 樂しみとなり， 多くの 人もその 誕生を 喜びます．
- 彼は 主の 御前にすぐれた 者となるからです． 彼は， ぶどう 酒も 强い 酒も 飮まず， まだ 母の 胎內にあるときから 聖靈に 滿たされ，

- And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
- And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
- But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
- And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
- For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

- そして イスラエル の 多くの 子らを， 彼らの 神である 主に 立ち 返らせます．
- 彼こそ， エリヤ の 靈と 力で 主の 前ぶれをし， 父たちの 心を 子供たちに 向けさせ， 逆らう 者を 義人の 心に 立ち 戾らせ， こうして， 整えられた 民を 主のために 用意するのです． 」
- そこで， ザカリヤ は 御使いに 言った． 「私は 何によってそれを 知ることができましょうか． 私ももう 年寄りですし， 妻も 年をとっております． 」
- 御使いは 答えて 言った． 「私は 神の 御前に 立つ ガブリエル です． あなたに 話をし， この 喜びのおとずれを 傳えるように 遣わされているのです．
- ですから， 見なさい． これらのことが 起こる 日までは， あなたは， おしになって， ものが 言えなくなります． 私のことばを 信じなかったからです． 私のことばは， その 時が 來れば 實現します． 」

- And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
- And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
- And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
- And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
- And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

- 人¿は ザカリヤ を 待っていたが， 神殿であまり 暇取るので 不思議に 思った．
- やがて 彼は 出て 來たが， 人¿に 話をすることができなかった． それで， 彼は 神殿で 幻を 見たのだとわかった． ザカリヤ は， 彼らに 合圖を 續けるだけで， おしのままであった．
- やがて， 務めの 期間が 終わったので， 彼は 自分の 家に 歸った．
- その 後， 妻 エリサベツ はみごもり， 五か 月の 間引きこもって， こう 言った．
- 「主は， 人中で 私の 恥を 取り 除こうと 心にかけられ， 今， 私をこのようにしてくださいました． 」

- And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
- And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
- And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
- And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
- Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
