	예레미야 37:1-38:28 시드기야가 왕위에 오른 후, 애굽의 군대가 예루살렘에 진격해 오자 바벨론 군대가 일시적으로 철수하였다. 시드기야 왕은 이 상황을 바벨론으로부터 유다가 구원받는 절호의 기회로 보고 예레미야에게 기도를 요청했다. 그러나 예레미야는 다시 바벨론이 침공할 것이라고 예언했다. 이로 인해 예레미야는 구덩이에 갇히게 되었지만 아벳멜렉에 의해 구출받았다. 시드기야 왕은 비밀리에 예레미야를 만나 바벨론에 항복할 것을 권고받지만 예레미야의 경고를 듣지 않았다.

	시드기야와 예레미야(37:1-37:21)

Now Zedekiah the son of Josiah whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had made king in the land of Judah, reigned as king in place of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim.

But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of the LORD which He spoke through Jeremiah the prophet.

Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "Please pray to the LORD our God on our behalf."

Now Jeremiah was still coming in and going out among the people, for they had not yet put him in the prison.

Meanwhile, Pharaoh's army had set out from Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who had been besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they lifted the siege from Jerusalem.

요시야의 아들 시드기야가 여호야김의 아들 고니야를 대신하여 왕이 되었으니 이는 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살이 그로 유다 땅의 왕을 삼음이었더라

그와 그 신하와 그 땅 백성이 여호와께서 선지자 예레미야로 하신 말씀을 듣지 아니하니라

시드기야왕이 셀레먀의 아들 여후갈과 마아세야의 아들 제사장 스바냐를 선지자 예레미야에게 보내어 청하되 너는 우리를 위하여 우리 하나님 여호와께 기도하라 하였으니

때에 예레미야가 갇히지 아니하였으므로 백성 가운데 출입하는 중이었더라

바로의 군대가 애굽에서 나오매 예루살렘을 에워쌌던 갈대아인이 그 소문을 듣고 예루살렘에서 떠났더라

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

"Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'Thus you are to say to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: "Behold, Pharaoh's army which has come out for your assistance is going to return to its own land of Egypt.

"The Chaldeans will also return and fight against this city, and they will capture it and burn it with fire."'

"Thus says the LORD, 'Do not deceive yourselves, saying, "The Chaldeans will surely go away from us," for they will not go.

'For even if you had defeated the entire army of Chaldeans who were fighting against you, and there were only wounded men left among them, each man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.'"

여호와의 말씀이 선지자 예레미야에게 임하여 가라사대

이스라엘의 하나님 나 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 너희를 보내어 내게 구하게 한 유다 왕에게 이르라 너희를 도우려고 나왔던 바로의 군대는 자기 땅 애굽으로 돌아가겠고

갈대아인이 다시 와서 이 성을 쳐서 취하여 불사르리라

나 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 너희는 스스로 속여 말하기를 갈대아인이 반드시 우리를 떠나리라 하지 말라 그들이 떠나지 아니하리라

가령 너희가 너희를 치는 갈대아인의 온 군대를 쳐서 그 중에 부상자만 남긴다 할찌라도 그들이 각기 장막에서 일어나 이 성을 불사르리라

Now it happened when the army of the Chaldeans had lifted the siege from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army,

that Jeremiah went out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin in order to take possession of some property there among the people.

While he was at the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah the son of Hananiah was there; and he arrested Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You are going over to the Chaldeans!"

But Jeremiah said, "A lie! I am not going over to the Chaldeans"; yet he would not listen to him. So Irijah arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.

Then the officials were angry at Jeremiah and beat him, and they put him in jail in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which they had made into the prison.

갈대아인의 군대가 바로의 군대를 두려워하여 예루살렘에서 떠나매

예레미야가 베냐민 땅에서 백성 중 분깃을 받으려고 예루살렘을 떠나 그리로 가려하여

베냐민 문에 이른즉 하나냐의 손자요 셀레먀의 아들인 이리야라 이름하는 문지기의 두목이 선지자 예레미야를 붙잡아 가로되 네가 갈대아인에게 항복하려 하는도다

예레미야가 가로되 망령되다 나는 갈대아인에게 항복하려 하지 아니하노라 이리야가 듣지 아니하고 예레미야를 잡아 방백들에게로 끌어가매

방백들이 노하여 예레미야를 때려서 서기관 요나단의 집에 가두었으니 이는 그들이 이 집으로 옥을 삼았음이더라

For Jeremiah had come into the dungeon, that is, the vaulted cell; and Jeremiah stayed there many days.

Now King Zedekiah sent and took him out; and in his palace the king secretly asked him and said, "Is there a word from the LORD?" And Jeremiah said, "There is!" Then he said, "You will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon!"

Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "In what way have I sinned against you, or against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison?

"Where then are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, 'The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land'?

"But now, please listen, O my lord the king; please let my petition come before you and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, that I may not die there."

예레미야가 토굴 옥 음실에 들어간지 여러날만에

시드기야왕이 보내어 그를 이끌어 내고 왕궁에서 그에게 비밀히 물어 가로되 여호와께로서 받은 말씀이 있느뇨 예레미야가 대답하되 있나이다 또 가로되 왕이 바벨론 왕의 손에 붙임을 입으리이다

예레미야가 다시 시드기야왕에게 이르되 내가 왕에게나 왕의 신하에게나 이 백성에게 무슨 죄를 범하였관대 나를 옥에 가두었나이까

바벨론 왕이 와서 왕과 이 땅을 치지 아니하리라고 예언한 왕의 선지자들이 이제 어디 있나이까

내 주 왕이여 이제 청컨대 나를 들으시며 나의 탄원을 받으사 나를 서기관 요나단의 집으로 돌려보내지 마옵소서 내가 거기서 죽을까 두려워하나이다

Then King Zedekiah gave commandment, and they committed Jeremiah to the court of the guardhouse and gave him a loaf of bread daily from the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guardhouse.

이에 시드기야왕이 명하여 예레미야를 시위대 뜰에 두고 떡 만드는 자의 거리에서 매일 떡 한덩이씩 그에게 주게 하매 성중에 떡이 다할 때까지 이르니라 예레미야가 시위대 뜰에 머무니라

	살아난 예레미야(38:1-38:28)

Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah heard the words that Jeremiah was speaking to all the people, saying,

"Thus says the LORD, 'He who stays in this city will die by the sword and by famine and by pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans will live and have his own life as booty and stay alive.'

"Thus says the LORD, 'This city will certainly be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon and he will capture it.'"

Then the officials said to the king, "Now let this man be put to death, inasmuch as he is discouraging the men of war who are left in this city and all the people, by speaking such words to them; for this man is not seeking the well-being of this people but rather their harm."

So King Zedekiah said, "Behold, he is in your hands; for the king can do nothing against you."

맛단의 아들 스바댜와 바스훌의 아들 그다랴와 셀레먀의 아들 유갈과 말기야의 아들 바스훌이 예레미야의 모든 백성에게 이르는 말을 들은즉 이르기를

여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 이 성에 머무는 자는 칼과 기근과 염병에 죽으리라 그러나 갈대아인에게 항복하는 자는 살리니 그의 생명이 노략물을 얻음 같이 살리라

나 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 이 성이 반드시 바벨론 왕의 군대의 손에 붙이우리니 그가 취하리라 하셨다 하는지라

이에 그 방백들이 왕께 고하되 이 사람이 백성의 평안을 구치 아니하고 해를 구하오니 청컨대 이 사람을 죽이소서 그가 이같이 말하여 이 성에 남은 군사의 손과 모든 백성의 손을 약하게 하나이다

시드기야왕이 가로되 보라 그가 너희 손에 있느니라 왕은 조금도 너희를 거스릴 수 없느니라

Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchijah the king's son, which was in the court of the guardhouse; and they let Jeremiah down with ropes Now in the cistern there was no water but only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.

But Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, while he was in the king's palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern Now the king was sitting in the Gate of Benjamin;

and Ebed-melech went out from the king's palace and spoke to the king, saying,

"My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have cast into the cistern; and he will die right where he is because of the famine, for there is no more bread in the city."

Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, "Take thirty men from here under your authority and bring up Jeremiah the prophet from the cistern before he dies."

그들이 예레미야를 취하여 시위대 뜰에 있는 왕의 아들 말기야의 구덩이에 던져 넣을 때에 예레미야를 줄로 달아내리웠는데 그 구덩이에는 물이 없고 진흙 뿐이므로 예레미야가 진흙 중에 빠졌더라

왕궁 환관 구스인 에벳멜렉이 그들의 예레미야를 구덩이에 던져 넣었음을 들으니라 때에 왕이 베냐민 문에 앉았더니

에벳멜렉이 왕궁에서 나와 왕께 고하여 가로되

내 주 왕이여 저 사람들이 선지자 예레미야에게 행한 모든 일은 악하니이다 성 중에 떡이 떨어졌거늘 그들이 그를 구덩이에 던져 넣었으니 그가 거기서 주려 죽으리이다

왕이 구스인 에벳멜렉에게 명하여 가로되 너는 여기서 삼십명을 데리고 가서 선지자 예레미야의 죽기 전에 그를 구덩이에서 끌어 내라

So Ebed-melech took the men under his authority and went into the king's palace to a place beneath the storeroom and took from there worn-out clothes and worn-out rags and let them down by ropes into the cistern to Jeremiah.

Then Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, "Now put these worn-out clothes and rags under your armpits under the ropes"; and Jeremiah did so.

So they pulled Jeremiah up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern, and Jeremiah stayed in the court of the guardhouse.

Then King Zedekiah sent and had Jeremiah the prophet brought to him at the third entrance that is in the house of the LORD; and the king said to Jeremiah, "I am going to ask you something; do not hide anything from me."

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "If I tell you, will you not certainly put me to death? Besides, if I give you advice, you will not listen to me."

에벳멜렉이 사람들을 데리고 왕궁 곳간 밑 방에 들어가서 거기서 헝겊과 낡은 옷을 취하고 그것을 구덩이에 있는 예레미야에게 줄로 내리우며

구스인 에벳멜렉이 예레미야에게 이르되 너는 이 헝겊과 낡은 옷을 네 겨드랑이에 대고 줄을 그 아래 대라 예레미야가 그대로 하매

그들이 줄로 예레미야를 구덩이에서 끌어낸지라 예레미야가 시위대 뜰에 머무니라

시드기야왕이 보내어 선지자 예레미야를 여호와의 집 제 삼문으로 데려오게 하고 왕이 예레미야에게 이르되 내가 네게 한 일을 물으리니 일호도 내게 숨기지 말라

예레미야가 시드기야에게 이르되 내가 이 일을 왕에게 아시게 하여도 왕이 단정코 나를 죽이지 아니하시리이까 가령 내가 왕을 권한다 할찌라도 왕이 듣지 아니하시리이다

But King Zedekiah swore to Jeremiah in secret saying, "As the LORD lives, who made this life for us, surely I will not put you to death nor will I give you over to the hand of these men who are seeking your life."

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "Thus says the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, 'If you will indeed go out to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you will live, this city will not be burned with fire, and you and your household will survive.

'But if you will not go out to the officers of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given over to the hand of the Chaldeans; and they will burn it with fire, and you yourself will not escape from their hand.'"

Then King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "I dread the Jews who have gone over to the Chaldeans, for they may give me over into their hand and they will abuse me."

But Jeremiah said, "They will not give you over. Please obey the LORD in what I am saying to you, that it may go well with you and you may live.

시드기야왕이 비밀히 예레미야에게 맹세하여 가로되 우리에게 이 영혼을 지으신 여호와께서 사시거니와 내가 너를 죽이지도 아니하겠고 네 생명을 찾는 그 사람들의 손에 붙이지도 아니하리라

예레미야가 시드기야에게 이르되 만군의 하나님이신 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 네가 만일 바벨론 왕의 방백들에게 항복하면 네 생명이 살겠고 이 성이 불사름을 입지 아니하겠고 너와 네 가족이 살려니와

네가 만일 나가서 바벨론 왕의 방백들에게 항복하지 아니하면 이 성이 갈대아인의 손에 붙이우리니 그들이 이 성을 불사를 것이며 너는 그들의 손을 벗어나지 못하리라 하셨나이다

시드기야왕이 예레미야에게 이르되 나는 갈대아인에게 항복한 유다인을 두려워하노라 염려컨대 갈대아인이 나를 그들의 손에 붙이면 그들이 나를 조롱할까 하노라

예레미야가 가로되 그 무리가 왕을 그들에게 붙이지 아니하리이다 원하옵나니 내가 왕에게 고한바 여호와의 목소리를 청종하소서 그리하면 왕이 복을 받아 생명을 보존하시리이다

"But if you keep refusing to go out, this is the word which the LORD has shown me:

'Then behold, all of the women who have been left in the palace of the king of Judah are going to be brought out to the officers of the king of Babylon; and those women will say, "Your close friends Have misled and overpowered you; While your feet were sunk in the mire, They turned back."

'They will also bring out all your wives and your sons to the Chaldeans, and you yourself will not escape from their hand, but will be seized by the hand of the king of Babylon, and this city will be burned with fire.'"

Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "Let no man know about these words and you will not die.

"But if the officials hear that I have talked with you and come to you and say to you, 'Tell us now what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us and we will not put you to death,'

그러나 만일 항복하기를 거절하시면 여호와께서 내게 보이신 말씀대로 되리이다

곧 유다 왕궁에 남아 있는 모든 여자가 바벨론 왕의 방백들에게로 끌려갈 것이요 그들은 네게 말하기를 네 친구들이 너를 꾀어 이기고 네 발이 진흙에 빠짐을 보고 물러갔도다 하리라

네 아내들과 자녀는 갈대아인에게로 끌어냄을 입겠고 너는 그들의 손에서 벗어나지 못하고 바벨론 왕의 손에 잡히리라 또 네가 이 성으로 불사름을 입게 하리라 하셨나이다

시드기야가 예레미야에게 이르되 너는 이 말을 사람으로 알게 하지 말라 그리하면 네가 죽지 아니하리라

만일 방백들이 내가 너와 말하였다 함을 듣고 와서 네게 말하기를 네가 왕에게 말씀한 것을 우리에게 고하라 우리에게 숨기지 말라 그리하면 우리가 너를 죽이지 아니하리라 또 왕이 네게 말씀한 것을 고하라 하거든

then you are to say to them, 'I was presenting my petition before the king, not to make me return to the house of Jonathan to die there.'"

Then all the officials came to Jeremiah and questioned him. So he reported to them in accordance with all these words which the king had commanded; and they ceased speaking with him, since the conversation had not been overheard.

So Jeremiah stayed in the court of the guardhouse until the day that Jerusalem was captured.

그들에게 대답하되 내가 왕의 앞에 간구하기를 나를 요나단의 집으로 도로 보내지 말아서 거기서 죽지 않게 하옵소서 하였다 하라 하니라

모든 방백이 예레미야에게 와서 물으매 그가 왕의 명한 모든 말대로 대답하였으므로 일이 탄로치 아니하였고 그들은 더불어 말하기를 그쳤더라

예레미야가 예루살렘이 함락되는 날까지 시위대 뜰에 머물렀더라

	고니야( 37:1) 여호야긴

	음실(陰室, 37:16) 본래 ‘무덤’을 뜻하나, 여기서는 어둡고 더러운 지하 감옥을 가리킴
