- Now while Ezra was praying and making confession, weeping and prostrating himself before the house of God, a very large assembly, men, women and children, gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept bitterly.
- Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, said to Ezra, "We have been unfaithful to our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.
- "So now let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
- "Arise! For this matter is your responsibility, but we will be with you; be courageous and act."
- Then Ezra rose and made the leading priests, the Levites and all Israel, take oath that they would do according to this proposal; so they took the oath.

- 에즈라가 하느님의 전 앞에 쓰러져 죄를 고백하고 울며 기도하는데, 이스라엘 사람들이 남자 여자 어린이 할 것 없이 울며불며 구름처럼 모여들었다.
- 그러는 가운데 엘람 후손으로 여히엘의 아들 스가니야가 에즈라에게 말하였다. "우리가 우리 하느님을 배신하고 이 땅에 사는 족속들 가운데서 외국 여자를 얻어 살고 있기는 합니다마는 이스라엘은 아직 앞날이 있습니다.
- 이제 우리는 선생님의 뜻과 우리 하느님의 분부를 두려워 받드는 이들의 뜻을 따라 우리 하느님과 약조를 맺고 외국 여자와 그 몸에서 얻은 자식들을 다 내보내도록 합시다. 법에 그렇게 있으면 그대로 해야 하지 않겠습니까?
- 일어나십시오. 선생님이 알아서 일을 처리하십시오. 우리는 다만 따르겠습니다. 용기를 내어 밀고 나가십시오."
- 이 말을 듣고 에즈라는 일어나 사제장들과 레위인들을 비롯하여 온 이스라엘에게 그 말대로 따르겠다는 맹세를 하게 하였다. 사람들은 그대로 맹세하였다.

- Then Ezra rose from before the house of God and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib Although he went there, he did not eat bread nor drink water, for he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
- They made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the exiles, that they should assemble at Jerusalem,
- and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the leaders and the elders, all his possessions should be forfeited and he himself excluded from the assembly of the exiles.
- So all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month on the twentieth of the month, and all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and the heavy rain.
- Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have been unfaithful and have married foreign wives adding to the guilt of Israel.

- 그제야 에즈라는 하느님의 전 앞을 떠나 엘랴십의 아들 여호하난의 집으로 갔다. 그러나 거기 묵으면서도 떡을 먹거나 물을 마시지는 않았다. 포로 생활까지 한 자들이 하느님을 다시 배반한 사실이 너무나도 서글펐던 것이다.
- 사로잡혀 갔다 온 사람들은 다 예루살렘으로 모이라는 전갈이 유다와 예루살렘에 전하여졌으며,
- 누구든지 사흘 안에 오지 않으면 민족의 어른들과 장로들의 뜻을 따라 재산을 몰수하고 포로 귀환민 교단에서 추방한다는 선포가 있었다.
- 그리하여 유다와 베냐민 사람들은 모두 사흘 안에 예루살렘에 모였다. 때는 구월 이십일이었다. 온 백성은 하느님의 성전 앞마당에 웅크리고 앉아 떨고 있었다. 겪을 일도 두려운데다가 겨울비마저 내렸던 것이다.
- 그런 가운데 사제 에즈라가 나서서 말하였다. "여러분 가운데는 외국 여자들과 같이 사는 사람들이 있습니다. 이것은 하느님을 배신하는 일이요, 이스라엘에 죄 한 조목을 더 보태는 일입니다.

- "Now therefore, make confession to the LORD God of your fathers and do His will; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives."
- Then all the assembly replied with a loud voice, "That's right! As you have said, so it is our duty to do.
- "But there are many people; it is the rainy season and we are not able to stand in the open. Nor can the task be done in one or two days, for we have transgressed greatly in this matter.
- "Let our leaders represent the whole assembly and let all those in our cities who have married foreign wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of each city, until the fierce anger of our God on account of this matter is turned away from us."
- Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, with Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supporting them.

- 이제 우리의 선조들의 하느님 야훼께 죄를 고백하고 하느님께서 기뻐하실 일을 하도록 하시오. 이 땅의 뭇 족속들과 손을 끊고 외국 여인들과의 관계를 끊으시오."
- 모인 사람들이 모두 큰소리로 외쳤다. "말씀대로 따르겠습니다.
- 그러나 사람이 많은데다가 지금은 겨울 장마철입니다. 그러니 언제까지 이러고 한데 서 있을 수도 없습니다. 이 일로 죄에 빠진 사람이 많아서 하루 이틀에 일이 끝나지도 않겠습니다.
- 그러니 우리의 어른들께서 온 교단을 대표해서 일해 주셨으면 좋겠습니다. 마을마다 때를 정해 주십시오. 그러면 외국 여자와 사는 사람들이 그 때에 그 마을 장로들과 판사들과 함께 와서 하느님의 진노를 풀어드리도록 하는 것이 좋겠습니다."
- 아사헬의 아들 요나단과 디그와의 아들 야하지야만은 이것을 반대하였다. 그들을 지지한 사람은 므술람과 레위인 삽대였다.

- But the exiles did so. And Ezra the priest selected men who were heads of fathers' households for each of their father's households, all of them by name. So they convened on the first day of the tenth month to investigate the matter.
- They finished investigating all the men who had married foreign wives by the first day of the first month.
- Among the sons of the priests who had married foreign wives were found of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah.
- They pledged to put away their wives, and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their offense.
- Of the sons of Immer there were Hanani and Zebadiah;

- 그러나 포로 귀환민들은 그대로 따르기로 하였다. 그래서 사제 에즈라는 각 가문의 어른들을 하나하나 이름을 불러 일을 맡겼다. 그들이 조사를 시작한 것은 시월 초하루였는데
- 다음해 설날까지 외국 여인과 사는 사람들을 모두 밝혀내었다.
- 사제들 가운데서 외국 여인과 사는 사람은 요사닥의 아들 예수아, 그의 일가 중에서 마아세야, 엘리에젤, 야립, 그달리야였다.
- 이들은 모두 아내를 내보내기로 서약하고 속죄제물로 숫양 한 마리를 바쳤다.

- Of Levites there were Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah and Eliezer.
- Of the singers there was Eliashib; and of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem and Uri.
- Of Israel, of the sons of Parosh there were Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah and Benaiah;

- All these had married foreign wives, and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
