- Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was being provoked within him as he was observing the city full of idols.
- So he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market place every day with those who happened to be present.
- And also some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him. Some were saying, "What would this idle babbler wish to say?" Others, "He seems to be a proclaimer of strange deities,"--because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.
- And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new teaching is which you are proclaiming?
- "For you are bringing some strange things to our ears; so we want to know what these things mean."

- さて， アテネ でふたりを 待っていた パウロ は， 町が 偶像でいっぱいなのを 見て， 心に 憤りを 感じた．
- そこで パウロ は， 會堂では ユダヤ 人や 神を 敬う 人たちと 論じ， 廣場では 每日そこに 居合わせた 人たちと 論じた．
- エピクロス 派と ストア 派の 哲學者たちも 幾人かいて， パウロ と 論じ 合っていたが， その 中のある 者たちは， 「このおしゃべりは， 何を 言うつもりなのか． 」と 言い， ほかの 者たちは， 「彼は 外國の 神¿を 傳えているらしい． 」と 言った． パウロ が イエス と 復活とを 宣べ 傳えたからである．
- そこで 彼らは， パウロ を アレオパゴス に 連れて 行ってこう 言った． 「あなたの 語っているその 新しい 敎えがどんなものであるか， 知らせていただけませんか．
- 私たちにとっては 珍しいことを 聞かせてくださるので， それがいったいどんなものか， 私たちは 知りたいのです． 」

- (Now all the Athenians and the strangers visiting there used to spend their time in nothing other than telling or hearing something new.)
- So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I observe that you are very religious in all respects.
- "For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, 'TO AN UNKNOWN GOD ' Therefore what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.
- "The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands;
- nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things;

- アテネ 人も， そこに 住む 外國人もみな， 何か 耳新しいことを 話したり， 聞いたりすることだけで， 日を 過ごしていた．
- そこで パウロ は， アレオパゴス の 眞中に 立って 言った． 「アテネ の 人たち． あらゆる 点から 見て， 私はあなたがたを 宗敎心にあつい 方¿だと 見ております．
- 私が 道を 通りながら， あなたがたの 拜むものをよく 見ているうちに， 『知られない 神に． 』と 刻まれた 祭壇があるのを 見つけました． そこで， あなたがたが 知らずに 拜んでいるものを， 敎えましょう．
- この 世界とその 中にあるすべてのものをお 造りになった 神は， 天地の 主ですから， 手でこしらえた 宮などにはお 住みになりません．
- また， 何かに 不自由なことでもあるかのように， 人の 手によって 仕えられる 必要はありません． 神は， すべての 人に， いのちと 息と 万物とをお 與えになった 方だからです．

- and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,
- that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;
- for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, 'For we also are His children.'
- "Being then the children of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man.
- "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,

- 神は， ひとりの 人からすべての 國の 人¿を 造り 出して， 地の 全面に 住まわせ， それぞれに 決められた 時代と， その 住まいの 境界とをお 定めになりました．
- これは， 神を 求めさせるためであって， もし 探り 求めることでもあるなら， 神を 見いだすこともあるのです． 確かに， 神は， 私たちひとりひとりから 遠く 離れてはおられません．
- 私たちは， 神の 中に 生き， 動き， また 存在しているのです． あなたがたのある 詩人たちも， 『私たちもまたその 子孫である． 』と 言ったとおりです．
- そのように 私たちは 神の 子孫ですから， 神を， 人間の 技術や 工夫で 造った 金や 銀や 石などの 像と 同じものと 考えてはいけません．
- 神は， そのような 無知の 時代を 見過ごしておられましたが， 今は， どこででもすべての 人に 悔い 改めを 命じておられます．

- because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead."
- Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some began to sneer, but others said, "We shall hear you again concerning this."
- So Paul went out of their midst.
- But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.

- なぜなら， 神は， お 立てになったひとりの 人により 義をもってこの 世界をさばくため， 日を 決めておられるからです． そして， その 方を 死者の 中からよみがえらせることによって， このことの 確證をすべての 人にお 與えになったのです． 」
- 死者の 復活のことを 聞くと， ある 者たちはあざ 笑い， ほかの 者たちは， 「このことについては， またいつか 聞くことにしよう． 」と 言った．
- こうして， パウロ は 彼らの 中から 出て 行った．
- しかし， 彼につき 從って 信仰にはいった 人たちもいた． それは， アレオパゴス の 裁判官 デオヌシオ ， ダマリス という 女， その 他の 人¿であった．
