- Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was being provoked within him as he was observing the city full of idols.
- So he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market place every day with those who happened to be present.
- And also some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him. Some were saying, "What would this idle babbler wish to say?" Others, "He seems to be a proclaimer of strange deities,"--because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.
- And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new teaching is which you are proclaiming?
- "For you are bringing some strange things to our ears; so we want to know what these things mean."

- パウロ は アテネ で 二人を 待っている 間に， この 町の 至るところに 偶像があるのを 見て 憤慨した．
- それで， 會堂では ユダヤ 人や 神をあがめる 人¿と 論じ， また， 廣場では 居合わせた 人¿と 每日論じ 合っていた．
- また， エピクロス 派や ストア 派の 幾人かの 哲學者も パウロ と 討論したが， その 中には， 「このおしゃべりは， 何を 言いたいのだろうか 」と 言う 者もいれば， 「彼は 外國の 神¿の 宣傳をする 者らしい 」と 言う 者もいた． パウロ が， イエス と 復活について 福音を 告げ 知らせていたからである．
- そこで， 彼らは パウロ を アレオパゴス に 連れて 行き， こう 言った． 「あなたが 說いているこの 新しい 敎えがどんなものか， 知らせてもらえないか．
- 奇妙なことをわたしたちに 聞かせているが， それがどんな 意味なのか 知りたいのだ． 」

- (Now all the Athenians and the strangers visiting there used to spend their time in nothing other than telling or hearing something new.)
- So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I observe that you are very religious in all respects.
- "For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, 'TO AN UNKNOWN GOD ' Therefore what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.
- "The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands;
- nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things;

- すべての アテネ 人やそこに 在留する 外國人は， 何か 新しいことを 話したり 聞いたりすることだけで， 時を 過ごしていたのである．
- パウロ は， アレオパゴス の 眞ん 中に 立って 言った． 「アテネ の 皆さん， あらゆる 点においてあなたがたが 信仰のあつい 方であることを， わたしは 認めます．
- 道を 步きながら， あなたがたが 拜むいろいろなものを 見ていると， 『知られざる 神に 』と 刻まれている 祭壇さえ 見つけたからです． それで， あなたがたが 知らずに 拜んでいるもの， それをわたしはお 知らせしましょう．
- 世界とその 中の 万物とを 造られた 神が， その 方です． この 神は 天地の 主ですから， 手で 造った 神殿などにはお 住みになりません．
- また， 何か 足りないことでもあるかのように， 人の 手によって 仕えてもらう 必要もありません． すべての 人に 命と 息と， その 他すべてのものを 與えてくださるのは， この 神だからです．

- and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,
- that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;
- for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, 'For we also are His children.'
- "Being then the children of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man.
- "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,

- 神は， 一人の 人からすべての 民族を 造り 出して， 地上の 至るところに 住まわせ， 季節を 決め， 彼らの 居住地の 境界をお 決めになりました．
- これは， 人に 神を 求めさせるためであり， また， 彼らが 探し 求めさえすれば， 神を 見いだすことができるようにということなのです． 實際， 神はわたしたち 一人一人から 遠く 離れてはおられません．
- 皆さんのうちのある 詩人たちも， ／『我らは 神の 中に 生き， 動き， 存在する 』／『我らもその 子孫である 』と， ／言っているとおりです．
- わたしたちは 神の 子孫なのですから， 神である 方を， 人間の 技や 考えで 造った 金， 銀， 石などの 像と 同じものと 考えてはなりません．
- さて， 神はこのような 無知な 時代を， 大目に 見てくださいましたが， 今はどこにいる 人でも 皆悔い 改めるようにと， 命じておられます．

- because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead."
- Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some began to sneer, but others said, "We shall hear you again concerning this."
- So Paul went out of their midst.
- But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.

- それは， 先にお 選びになった 一人の 方によって， この 世を 正しく 裁く 日をお 決めになったからです． 神はこの 方を 死者の 中から 復活させて， すべての 人にそのことの 確證をお 與えになったのです． 」
- 死者の 復活ということを 聞くと， ある 者はあざ 笑い， ある 者は， 「それについては， いずれまた 聞かせてもらうことにしよう 」と 言った．
- それで， パウロ はその 場を 立ち 去った．
- しかし， 彼について 行って 信仰に 入った 者も， 何人かいた． その 中には アレオパゴス の 議員 ディオニシオ ， また ダマリス という 婦人やその 他の 人¿もいた．
