  1. Soon afterwards He went to a city called Nain; and His disciples were going along with Him, accompanied by a large crowd.
  2. Now as He approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from the city was with her.
  3. When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, "Do not weep."
  4. And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise!"
  5. The dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
  1. And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.
  2. Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
  3. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
  4. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
  5. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
  1. Fear gripped them all, and they began glorifying God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and, "God has visited His people!"
  2. This report concerning Him went out all over Judea and in all the surrounding district.
  3. The disciples of John reported to him about all these things.
  4. Summoning two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, "Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?"
  5. When the men came to Him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to You, to ask, 'Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?'"
  1. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
  2. And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.
  3. And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.
  4. And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
  5. When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
  1. At that very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind.
  2. And He answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM.
  3. "Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me."
  4. When the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
  5. "But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces!
  1. And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
  2. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
  3. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
  4. And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
  5. But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.
  1. "But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one who is more than a prophet.
  2. "This is the one about whom it is written, 'BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.'
  3. "I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."
  4. When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged God's justice, having been baptized with the baptism of John.
  5. But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God's purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John.
  1. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
  2. This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
  3. For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
  4. And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
  5. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
  1. "To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?
  2. "They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another, and they say, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.'
  3. "For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, 'He has a demon!'
  4. "The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'
  5. "Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children."
  1. And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
  2. They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
  3. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
  4. The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
  5. But wisdom is justified of all her children.
