  1. Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
  2. It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
  3. So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick."
  4. But when Jesus heard this, He said, "This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it."
  5. Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
  1. Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
  2. (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
  3. Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
  4. When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
  5. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
  1. So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was.
  2. Then after this He said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again."
  3. The disciples said to Him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and are You going there again?"
  4. Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
  5. "But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."
  1. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
  2. Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
  3. His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
  4. Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
  5. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
  1. This He said, and after that He said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep."
  2. The disciples then said to Him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."
  3. Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literal sleep.
  4. So Jesus then said to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead,
  5. and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him."
  1. These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
  2. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
  3. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
  4. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
  5. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
  1. Therefore Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, so that we may die with Him."
  2. So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.
  3. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off;
  4. and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
  5. Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house.
  1. Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
  2. Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
  3. Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
  4. And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
  5. Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
  1. Martha then said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
  2. "Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You."
  3. Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
  4. Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."
  5. Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,
  1. Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
  2. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
  3. Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
  4. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
  5. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
  1. and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?"
  2. She said to Him, "Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world."
  3. When she had said this, she went away and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you."
  4. And when she heard it, she got up quickly and was coming to Him.
  5. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him.
  1. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
  2. She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
  3. And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
  4. As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
  5. Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
  1. Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
  2. Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died."
  3. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled,
  4. and said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to Him, "Lord, come and see."
  5. Jesus wept.
  1. The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
  2. Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
  3. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.
  4. And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
  5. Jesus wept.
  1. So the Jews were saying, "See how He loved him!"
  2. But some of them said, "Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man also from dying?"
  3. So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
  4. Jesus said, "Remove the stone." Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, "Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days."
  5. Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?"
  1. Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
  2. And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
  3. Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
  4. Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
  5. Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
  1. So they removed the stone Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
  2. "I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me."
  3. When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth."
  4. The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
  1. Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
  2. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
  3. And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
  4. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
