  1. For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
  2. For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it.
  3. For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives.
  4. Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood.
  5. For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,
  1. And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
  2. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
  3. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
  4. Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.
  5. For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
  1. saying, "THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU."
  2. And in the same way he sprinkled both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood.
  3. And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
  4. Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
  5. For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;
  1. Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.
  2. Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.
  3. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
  4. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
  5. For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
  1. nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood that is not his own.
  2. Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
  3. And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,
  4. so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.
  1. Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;
  2. For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
  3. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
  4. So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
