  1. Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.
  2. See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;
  3. that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal.
  4. For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.
  5. For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind,
  1. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
  2. Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
  3. Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
  4. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
  5. For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
  1. and to the blast of a trumpet and the sound of words which sound was such that those who heard begged that no further word be spoken to them.
  2. For they could not bear the command, "IF EVEN A BEAST TOUCHES THE MOUNTAIN, IT WILL BE STONED."
  3. And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, "I AM FULL OF FEAR and trembling."
  4. But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels,
  5. to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,
  1. And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
  2. (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
  3. And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
  4. But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
  5. To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
  1. and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.
  2. See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven.
  3. And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, "YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN."
  4. This expression, "Yet once more," denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
  5. Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;
  1. And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things that that of Abel.
  2. See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
  3. Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
  4. And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
  5. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
  1. for our God is a consuming fire.
  1. For our God is a consuming fire.
