창세기 37:1-38:30

 아버지의 사랑을 독차지하고 두 번에 걸친 자신의 꿈 이야기를 자랑하는 요셉을 시기하고 질투한 형들이 음모로 꾸며 요셉을 종으로 팔았다. 한편 세 아들을 둔 유다는 야웨 앞에서 행위가 악한 장자와 둘째 아들을 잃었고, 맏며느리 다말은 장성한 셋째 아들을 통해서도 후사를 잇지 못하게 되자 꾀를 내어 시부인 유다와 동침하여 베레스와 세라를 낳았다.
  
  요셉의 꿈(37:1-37:36)    
 
  1. Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.
  2. This is the account of Jacob. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.
  3. Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for him.
  4. When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.
  5. Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.
  1. 한편 야곱은 자기 선친이 유랑민으로서 머문 적이 있던 땅 가나안에 자리를 잡았다.
  2. 야곱의 아들들의 이야기는 여기에서 시작된다. 요셉은 열일곱 살이 되어 형들과 함께 양을 치게 되었다. 그는 아버지의 두 소실 빌하와 질바의 아들들을 거들어주고 있다가 아버지에게 그들을 좋지 않게 일러바쳤다.
  3. 이스라엘은 요셉을 늘그막에 얻은 아들이라고 해서 어느 아들보다도 더 사랑하였다. 그래서 장신구를 단 옷을 지어 입히곤 하였다.
  4. 이렇게 아버지가 유별나게 그만을 더 사랑하는 것을 보고 형들은 미워서 정다운 말 한마디 건넬 생각이 없었다.
  5. 한번은 요셉이 꿈을 꾸고 그 꿈 이야기를 형들에게 했는데 그 때문에 형들은 그를 더 미워하게 되었다.
  1. He said to them, "Listen to this dream I had:
  2. We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it."
  3. His brothers said to him, "Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?" And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.
  4. Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. "Listen," he said, "I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me."
  5. When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, "What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?"
  1. "내가 꾼 꿈 이야기를 들어봐요." 하며 그는 이야기를 꺼냈다.
  2. "글쎄, 밭에서 우리가 곡식 단을 묶고 있는데, 내가 묶은 단이 우뚝 일어서고 형들이 묶은 단이 둘러서서 내가 묶은 단에게 절을 하지 않겠어요?"
  3. "네가 정말 우리에게 왕노릇 할 셈이냐? 네가 정말 우리에게 주인노릇 할 셈이냐?" 형들은 그 꿈 이야기를 듣자 그를 더욱 미워하게 되었다.
  4. 그 후 그는 또 다른 꿈을 꾸고는 형들에게 그 이야기를 또 했다. "글쎄, 내가 꿈을 또 꾸었는데 해와 달과 별 열 하나가 내게 절을 하더군요."
  5. 그는 아버지와 형들에게 이 이야기를 했다가 아버지에게 꾸지람을 들었다. "네가 꾼 꿈이 대체 무엇이냐? 그래, 나와 네 어머니와 네 형제들이 너에게 나아가 땅에 엎드려 절을 할 것이란 말이냐?"
  1. His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
  2. Now his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shechem,
  3. and Israel said to Joseph, "As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them." "Very well," he replied.
  4. So he said to him, "Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me." Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron. When Joseph arrived at Shechem,
  5. a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, "What are you looking for?"
  1. 형들은 그를 질투했지만, 아버지는 그 일을 마음에 두었다.

  1. He replied, "I'm looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?"
  2. "They have moved on from here," the man answered. "I heard them say, 'Let's go to Dothan.' " So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan.
  3. But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.
  4. "Here comes that dreamer!" they said to each other.
  5. "Come now, let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams."
  1. "저의 형들을 찾고 있습니다." 요셉은 그에게 형들이 어디서 풀을 뜯기고 있는지 알거든 알려달라고 했다.
  2. 그가 대답하였다. "벌써 여기를 떠났다. 도다인으로 가자고 하는 소리를 들었다." 이 말을 듣고 요셉은 도다인으로 찾아가 거기에서 형들을 만나게 되었다.
  3. 형들은 멀리서 알아보고 그가 다다르기 전에 죽이려고 음모를 꾸몄다.
  4. "야, 꿈쟁이가 오는구나.
  5. 저 녀석을 죽여 아무 구덩이에나 처넣고는 들짐승이 잡아먹었다고 하자. 그리고 그 꿈이 어떻게 되어가는가 보자."
  1. When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. "Let's not take his life," he said.
  2. "Don't shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the desert, but don't lay a hand on him." Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.
  3. So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe--the richly ornamented robe he was wearing-
  4. and they took him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it.
  5. As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.
  1. 그러나 르우벤은 그 말을 듣고 있다가 그들의 손에서 그를 건져낼 속셈으로 목숨만은 해치지 말자고 하였다.
  2. "피만은 흘리지 마라. 그 녀석을 이 빈 들에 있는 구덩이에 처넣고 손만은 대지 마라." 르우벤은 그들의 손에서 요셉을 살려내어 아버지께로 되돌려보낼 생각이었다.
  3. 이윽고 요셉이 다다르자 그들은 요셉에게서 옷을 벗겼다. 그것은 장신구를 단 옷이었다.
  4. 그리고는 그를 잡아 구덩이에 처넣었는데 그 구덩이는 물 없는 빈 구덩이였다.
  5. 그들이 앉아 음식을 먹는데, 마침 길르앗으로부터 낙타를 몰고 오는 이스마엘 상인들이 눈에 띄었다. 그들은 향고무와 유향과 몰약을 낙타에 싣고 이집트로 가는 길이었다.
  1. Judah said to his brothers, "What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?
  2. Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood." His brothers agreed.
  3. So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.
  4. When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.
  5. He went back to his brothers and said, "The boy isn't there! Where can I turn now?"
  1. 유다가 형제들에게 말하였다. "그래도 우리 동기인데 그를 죽이고 그 피를 덮어버린다고 해서 무슨 이득이 있겠니?
  2. 그러니 그 애를 이스마엘 사람들에게 팔아버리고 우리는 손을 대지 말자. 아무래도 우리 동기요, 우리 혈육이 아니냐?" 형제들은 그의 말을 듣기로 했다.
  3. 그러는 동안 미디안 상인들이 지나가다가 요셉을 구덩이에서 끌어내었다. 그들은 그를 이스마엘 사람들에게 은 이십 냥에 팔아 넘겼다. 이스마엘 사람들은 요셉을 이집트로 데리고 갔다.
  4. 르우벤은 구덩이로 돌아와 요셉이 그 안에 없는 것을 보고 옷을 찢으며
  5. 형제들에게로 돌아가 "그 애가 없어졌다. 난 이제 어디로 가야 하느냐!" 하고 부르짖었다.
  1. Then they got Joseph's robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.
  2. They took the ornamented robe back to their father and said, "We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son's robe."
  3. He recognized it and said, "It is my son's robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces."
  4. Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days.
  5. All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. "No," he said, "in mourning will I go down to the grave to my son." So his father wept for him.
  1. 그러자 그들은 염소 한 마리를 죽이고 요셉의 옷을 가져다 그 피를 묻혔다.
  2. 그리고 그 장신구로 꾸민 옷을 아버지께 보내며 말을 전하였다. "이것을 우리가 주웠습니다. 이것이 아버님 아들의 옷인지 아닌지 잘 보십시오."
  3. 그는 그것을 곧 알아보고 외쳤다. "내 아들의 옷이다. 들짐승이 잡아먹었구나. 요셉이 짐승들의 밥이 되다니!"
  4. 야곱은 옷을 찢고, 베옷을 몸에 걸친 채 아들을 생각하며 날이 가도 달이 가도 울기만 했다.
  5. 그의 아들딸들이 모두 일어나 위로했지만 그는 위로를 받지 않고 다만 이렇게 말하는 것이었다. "아니다, 나는 지하로 내 아들한테 울면서 내려가겠다." 이렇게 아버지는 요셉을 생각하여 울었다.
  1. Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard.
  1. 한편 미디안 사람들은 이집트로 가서 파라오의 신하인 경호대장 이집트 사람 보디발에게 그를 팔아 넘겼다.
 
  유다와 다말의 근친 상간(38:1-38:30)    
 
  1. At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah.
  2. There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and lay with her;
  3. she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er.
  4. She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan.
  5. She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.
  1. 그 무렵에 유다는 형제들로부터 떨어져 나와 히라라 불리는 아둘람 사람에게 붙어 살았다.
  2. 거기서 유다는 가나안 사람 수아의 딸을 만나 아내로 삼아 한자리에 들었다.
  3. 그 여자는 임신하여 아들을 낳고 이름을 에르라 지어주었다.
  4. 그는 다시 임신하여 아들을 낳고 이름을 오난이라 지어주었고
  5. 다시 아들을 낳고 이름을 셀라라 지어주었다. 그가 셀라를 낳은 것은 그집이라는 곳에서였다.
  1. Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
  2. But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the LORD's sight; so the LORD put him to death.
  3. Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother."
  4. But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother.
  5. What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also.
  1. 유다는 맏아들 에르에게 아내를 얻어주었는데 그의 이름은 다말이었다.
  2. 유다의 맏아들 에르는 야훼의 눈 밖에 나서 죽었다.
  3. 유다는 오난에게 이르기를 형수에게 장가들어 시동생으로서 할 일을 하여 형의 후손을 남기라고 하였다.
  4. 그러나 그 씨가 자기 것이 되지 않을 줄 알고 오난은 형수와 한자리에 들었을 때 정액을 바닥에 흘려 형에게 후손을 남겨주지 않으려 하였다.
  5. 그가 한 이런 짓은 야훼의 눈에 거슬리는 일이었으므로 야훼께서는 그도 죽이셨다.
  1. Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Live as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up." For he thought, "He may die too, just like his brothers." So Tamar went to live in her father's house.
  2. After a long time Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.
  3. When Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,"
  4. she took off her widow's clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.
  5. When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.
  1. 그러자 유다는 며느리 다말에게 이렇게 말하였다. "내 아들 셀라가 어른이 될 때까지 친정에 돌아가 홀몸으로 기다려다오." 그마저 형들처럼 죽을까봐 걱정스러웠던 것이다. 그리하여 다말은 친정에 돌아가 살게 되었다.
  2. 그 후 많은 세월이 흘러 유다의 아내, 수아의 딸이 죽었다. 유다는 상을 벗은 다음, 친구 아둘람 사람 히라와 함께 양털을 깎으러 딤나로 올라갔다.
  3. 한편 다말은 시아버지가 양털을 깎으러 딤나로 올라온다는 말을 전해 듣고는
  4. 과부의 옷차림을 벗어버리고 너울을 써서 몸을 가리우고 딤나로 가는 길가 에나임 성 문에 나가 앉았다. 셀라가 이미 어른이 되었는데도 자기를 아내로 데려가 주지 않았기 때문이었다.
  5. 유다는 그 여자가 얼굴을 가린 것을 보고 창녀려니 생각하였다.
  1. Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, "Come now, let me sleep with you." "And what will you give me to sleep with you?" she asked.
  2. "I'll send you a young goat from my flock," he said. "Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?" she asked.
  3. He said, "What pledge should I give you?" "Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand," she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.
  4. After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow's clothes again.
  5. Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her.
  1. 그래서 그는 길가에 있는 여인에게로 발길을 돌리며 수작을 건넸다. "너한테 들러가고 싶구나. 어서 가자." 그 여인이 바로 자기의 며느리라는 것을 알았을 리가 만무하다. 다말은 화대로 무엇을 주겠느냐고 물었다.
  2. "내 양떼 가운데서 새끼 염소 한 마리를 보내마." 하고 그가 대답하였다. "그걸 보내주실 때까지 담보물을 맡겨주세요." 하고 그 여자가 말했다.
  3. 그가 물었다. "무슨 담보물을 주어야 하나?" 그 여자가 대답했다. "당신의 그 줄 달린 인장과 잡고 있는 지팡이면 됩니다." 그래서 그것을 주고 한자리에 들었는데 마침 그의 아이를 갖게 되었다.
  4. 그는 돌아가 너울을 벗고 과부 옷차림으로 바꾸었다.
  5. 유다는 자기 친구 아둘람 사람을 시켜 새끼 염소 한 마리를 주고 그 여인에게서 담보물을 찾아오게 하였으나 그 여인은 이미 거기에 없었다.
  1. He asked the men who lived there, "Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?" "There hasn't been any shrine prostitute here," they said.
  2. So he went back to Judah and said, "I didn't find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, 'There hasn't been any shrine prostitute here.' "
  3. Then Judah said, "Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn't find her."
  4. About three months later Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant." Judah said, "Bring her out and have her burned to death!"
  5. As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. "I am pregnant by the man who owns these," she said. And she added, "See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are."
  1. 그는 그 곳 사람들에게 에나임 길 가에 있는 신전 창녀가 어디로 갔느냐고 물어보았으나, 거기에는 신전 창녀라고는 하나도 없다는 것이었다.
  2. 그래서 그는 돌아와 "그 여자를 찾지 못했네. 뿐만 아니라 그 곳에는 신전 창녀라고는 하나도 없다고 그 곳 사람들이 말하더군." 하고 보고했다.
  3. 유다가 그에게 말했다. "그것을 가질 테면 가지라지. 우리가 공연히 웃음거리가 될 것은 없지 않나? 글쎄 보게. 새끼 염소를 보냈는데도 자넨 그 여자를 찾을 수가 없었으니...."
  4. 석 달쯤 지나 유다는 며느리 다말이 창녀 짓을 하여 아이까지 가졌다는 말을 전해 듣게 되었다. 유다는 그를 끌어내어 화형에 처하라고 명령하였다.
  5. 그리하여 다말은 끌려 나오게 되자 시아버지에게 전갈을 보냈다. "이 물건들은 누구의 것입니까? 나는 그의 아이를 배었습니다. 이 줄 달린 인장과 지팡이가 누구의 것인지 보아주십시오."
  1. Judah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn't give her to my son Shelah." And he did not sleep with her again.
  2. When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.
  3. As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, "This one came out first."
  4. But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, "So this is how you have broken out!" And he was named Perez.
  5. Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out and he was given the name Zerah.
  1. 유다는 그 물건들을 알아보고 "그 애가 나보다 낫구나! 내가 내 아들 셀라에게 그 애를 아내로 맞게 하지 않았으니...." 하고 다시는 그를 가까이하지 않았다.
  2. 몸을 풀 때가 다 되어 그의 태에 쌍둥이가 들어 있는 것이 나타났다.
  3. 그런데 몸을 막 풀려고 하는데 한 아이가 손 하나를 내밀었다. "이 아이가 먼저 나온 놈이다." 산파는 그 손을 잡아 진홍 실을 매두었다.
  4. 그러나 그 아이는 손을 안으로 다시 끌어들였다. 그러는 사이에 그의 아우가 나오자 "이 밀치고 나온 놈!" 하고 산파가 말하였다. 그래서 그의 이름을 베레스라고 지었다.
  5. 뒤따라 손에 진홍 실을 맨 형이 나오자 그의 이름을 제라라고 지었다.
 
  임산(臨産, 38:27)  산기(産期)가 임박하여 고통이 시작됨
