출애굽기 17:1-18:27

신 광야에서 이스라엘 백성들이 갈증으로 인해 불평하자 하나님께서는 반석에서 물이 나오게 하심으로 백성들의 목마름을 해결해 주셨다. 아말렉과의 전쟁에서, 모세는 아론과 훌의 도움을 받아 해가 지도록 손을 들고 기도하여 아말렉을 이기게 되었다. 모세는 장인 이드로의 충고에 따라 백성들 가운데서 재덕을 갖춘 자로 천부장, 백부장, 오십부장, 십부장을 택하여 일을 맡겼다.
 
  아말렉과의 전쟁(17:1-17:16)    
 
  1. The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.
  2. So they quarreled with Moses and said, "Give us water to drink." Moses replied, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the LORD to the test?"
  3. But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?"
  4. Then Moses cried out to the LORD, "What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me."
  5. The LORD answered Moses, "Walk on ahead of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
  1. 이스라엘 백성 온 회중은 씬 광야를 떠나 야훼의 지시대로 진지를 옮겨가면서 전진하였다. 르비딤에 이르러 먹을 물이 없는 것을 보고,
  2. 백성들은 모세에게 먹을 물을 내라고 들이대었다. 모세가 "어찌하여 나에게 대드느냐? 어찌하여 야훼를 시험하느냐?" 하고 말했지만,
  3. 백성들은 당장 목이 말라 견딜 수 없었으므로 모세에게 불평을 터뜨렸다. "어쩌자고 우리를 이집트에서 데려내왔느냐? 자식들과 가축들과 함께 목말라 죽게 할 작정이냐?"
  4. 모세가 야훼께 부르짖었다. "이 백성을 어떻게 하면 좋겠습니까? 당장 저를 돌로 쳐죽일 것만 같습니다."
  5. 야훼께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 이스라엘 장로들을 데리고 이 백성보다 앞서 오너라. 나일 강을 치던 너의 지팡이를 손에 들고 오너라.
  1. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink." So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.
  2. And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the LORD saying, "Is the LORD among us or not?"
  3. The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.
  4. Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands."
  5. So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.
  1. 내가 호렙의 바위 옆에서 네 앞에 나타나리라. 네가 그 바위를 치면, 물이 터져 나와 이 백성이 마시게 되리라." 모세는 이스라엘 장로들이 지켜보는 앞에서 그대로 하였다.
  2. 여기에서 이스라엘 백성이 대들었다고 해서 이 고장 이름을 므리바라고도 하고 "야훼께서 우리 가운데 계신가 안 계신가?" 하며 야훼를 시험했다고 해서 마싸아라고도 부르게 되었다.
  3. 아말렉 사람들이 몰려와 르비딤에서 이스라엘 사람들과 싸움을 벌였다.
  4. 모세가 여호수아에게 명령하였다. "장정을 뽑아서 내일 아말렉과 싸우러 나가시오. 나는 하느님의 지팡이를 손에 들고 산꼭대기에 서 있겠소."
  5. 여호수아는 모세가 지시하는 대로 아말렉과 싸우러 나갔다. 모세와 아론과 후르는 언덕 위에 올라가 있었다.
  1. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning.
  2. When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up--one on one side, one on the other--so that his hands remained steady till sunset.
  3. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.
  4. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven."
  5. Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner.
  1. 모세가 팔을 들면 이스라엘이 이기고 모세가 팔을 내리면 아말렉이 이겼다.
  2. 모세의 팔에 힘이 빠지기 시작하였다. 그러자 사람들이 돌을 갖다 놓고 모세를 그 위에 앉히고 아론과 후르는 모세의 팔을 좌우에서 각각 붙들어 떠받치니 해가 질 때까지 그의 팔은 처지지 않게 되었다.
  3. 그래서 여호수아는 아말렉과 그 백성을 칼로 쳐 이겼다.
  4. 야훼께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "이 일을 책에 기록하여 후세에 남겨두어라. 그리고 내가, 아무도 아말렉을 기억하는 사람이 없도록 하늘 아래에서 전멸시키겠다고 여호수아에게 똑똑히 일러주어라."
  5. 모세는 그 곳에 제단을 쌓고 야훼 니씨라고 이름을 붙이고
  1. He said, "For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD. The LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation."
  1. "야훼의 사령기를 향해 손을 들자. 야훼께서 대대로 아말렉과 싸워주시리라." 하고 외쳤다.
 
  이드로의 충고(18:1-18:27)    
 
  1. Now Jethro, the priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.
  2. After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro received her
  3. and her two sons. One son was named Gershom, for Moses said, "I have become an alien in a foreign land";
  4. and the other was named Eliezer, for he said, "My father's God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh."
  5. Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, together with Moses' sons and wife, came to him in the desert, where he was camped near the mountain of God.
  1. 모세의 장인이요, 미디안 사제인 이드로는 하느님께서 온갖 일로 모세와 그의 백성 이스라엘을 이집트에서 건져내셨다는 소식을 들었다.
  2. 모세의 장인 이드로는 친정에 돌아와 있던 모세의 아내 시뽀라와
  3. 시뽀라의 두 아들을 데리고 나섰다. 한 아들은 게르솜인데, "내가 낯선 고장에 몸붙여 사는 식객이 되었구나." 하며 붙여준 이름이었다.
  4. 또 한 아들은 엘리에젤인데 이는 "나의 선조의 하느님께서 나를 도우시어 파라오의 칼에서 건져주셨다." 하며 붙여준 이름이었다.
  5. 모세의 장인 이드로는 모세의 두 아들과 아내를 데리고 모세가 진을 친 광야에 있는 하느님의 산 기슭에 이르러
  1. Jethro had sent word to him, "I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons."
  2. So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent.
  3. Moses told his father-in-law about everything the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel's sake and about all the hardships they had met along the way and how the LORD had saved them.
  4. Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things the LORD had done for Israel in rescuing them from the hand of the Egyptians.
  5. He said, "Praise be to the LORD, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians.
  1. 모세에게 전갈을 보냈다. "자네의 장인 나 이드로가 자네의 처와 두 아들을 데리고 왔다."
  2. 모세는 장인을 맞으러 나가 엎드려 인사를 올리고 입을 맞추었다. 그들은 서로 안부를 물으며 천막으로 들어갔다.
  3. 모세는 장인에게 그 동안 야훼께서 이스라엘을 위하여 파라오와 이집트인들에게 어떤 일을 하셨는지, 저희가 도중에 얼마나 고달픈 일을 겪었으며, 그 때마다 야훼께서 어떻게 건져주셨는지를 낱낱이 이야기해 주었다.
  4. 이드로는 야훼께서 이스라엘을 이집트인들의 손아귀에서 건지시기 위하여 베푸신 온갖 고마운 일을 듣고 기뻐하며
  5. 말하였다. "이집트인들의 손아귀와 파라오의 손에서 너희를 건지신 야훼야말로 마땅히 찬양받으실 분이다. 그분이 이 백성을 이집트인들의 억압에서 건져내셨구나.
  1. Now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly."
  2. Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God.
  3. The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening.
  4. When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, "What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?"
  5. Moses answered him, "Because the people come to me to seek God's will.
  1. 이제야 나는 야훼께서 어떤 신보다도 위대하시다는 것을 알았다. 이집트인들은 이 백성에게 너무나도 방자했구나."
  2. 모세의 장인 이드로가 번제물과 여러 가지 제물을 하느님께 바쳤다. 아론과 이스라엘의 장로들이 모두 와서 모세의 장인과 함께 하느님 앞에서 제사 음식을 먹었다.
  3. 이튿날 아침, 모세가 백성들의 소송을 재판하기 위하여 재판석에 앉았다. 백성들은 아침부터 저녁까지 모세 둘레에 서 있었다.
  4. 모세의 장인은 모세가 백성을 다스리느라고 애쓰는 모습을 보고 말하였다. "백성을 이렇게 다스리다니, 이게 무슨 일인가? 아침부터 저녁까지 둘러서 있는 이 백성을 왜 혼자 앉아서 다 처리하는가?"
  5. 그러자 모세는, "백성은 하느님께서 판가름해 주셔야 할 일이 생기면 저에게로 옵니다.
  1. Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God's decrees and laws."
  2. Moses' father-in-law replied, "What you are doing is not good.
  3. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.
  4. Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people's representative before God and bring their disputes to him.
  5. Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform.
  1. 무슨 일이든지 생기면 저에게로 옵니다. 이웃끼리의 문제를 제가 재판해 주고 하느님께서 지키라고 주신 규칙도 알려주어야 합니다." 하고 설명하였다.
  2. 모세의 장인이 그에게 충고하였다. "이렇게 해서야 되겠는가?
  3. 자네뿐 아니라 자네가 거느린 이 백성도 아주 지쳐버리고 말겠네. 이렇게 힘겨운 일을 어떻게 혼자서 해내겠는가?
  4. 이제 내가 한마디 충고할 터이니 들어보게. 아무쪼록 하느님께서 자네를 도와주시기 바라네. 자네는 백성의 대변인이 되어 그들이 제시하는 소송들을 하느님 앞에 내어놓게.
  5. 그리고 그들이 지켜야 할 규칙을 알려주어 어떻게 살아야 하며 무엇을 해야 할지를 가르쳐주게.
  1. But select capable men from all the people--men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain--and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
  2. Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.
  3. If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied."
  4. Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said.
  5. He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
  1. 하느님을 두려워하여 참되게 살며 욕심이 없고 유능한 사람을 찾아내어 백성을 다스리게 세워주는 것이 좋겠네. 천 명을 거느릴 사람, 백 명을 거느릴 사람, 오십 명을 거느릴 사람, 십 명을 거느릴 사람을 세우게.
  2. 언제나 그들을 시켜 백성을 다스리게 하고 큰 사건만 자네에게 가져오도록 하게. 작은 사건은 모두 그들에게 맡겨두게. 그들과 짐을 나누어 자네 짐을 덜도록 하게.
  3. 자네가 이와 같이 일을 처리한다면, 이것이 곧 하느님의 뜻에도 부합되고 자네 일도 다 감당할 수 있어 이 백성이 모두 만족해서 집으로 돌아갈 것일세."
  4. 모세는 장인의 말을 듣고 그대로 하였다.
  5. 모세는 이스라엘 백성 가운데서 유능한 사람들을 골라내어 백성의 지도자로 삼았다. 천 명을 거느릴 사람, 백 명을 거느릴 사람, 오십 명을 거느릴 사람, 십 명을 거느릴 사람을 세워
  1. They served as judges for the people at all times. The difficult cases they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves.
  2. Then Moses sent his father-in-law on his way, and Jethro returned to his own country.
  1. 늘 백성을 다스리게 하였다. 그들은 어려운 일은 모세에게 가져왔지만 사소한 일들은 모두 자기네가 다스렸다.
  2. 얼마 있다가 이드로는 모세의 배웅을 받으며 제 고장으로 돌아갔다.
