  1. Now it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.
  2. At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.
  3. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"
  4. For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.
  5. While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."
  1. Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people any one prisoner whom they wanted.
  2. At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.
  3. So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"
  4. For he knew that because of envy they had handed Him over.
  5. While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, "Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him."
  1. But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
  2. "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered.
  3. "What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!"
  4. "Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"
  5. When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!"
  1. But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death.
  2. But the governor said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" And they said, "Barabbas."
  3. Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all said, "Crucify Him!"
  4. And he said, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they kept shouting all the more, saying, "Crucify Him!"
  5. When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this Man's blood; see to that yourselves."
  1. All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and on our children!"
  2. Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
  3. Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.
  4. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
  5. and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they said.
  1. And all the people said, "His blood shall be on us and on our children!"
  2. Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
  3. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him.
  4. They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
  5. And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
  1. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.
  2. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
  1. They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.
  2. After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
