- As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.
- His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
- "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.
- As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
- While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

- さて， イエス は 通りすがりに， 生まれつき 目の 見えない 人を 見かけられた．
- 弟子たちが イエス に 尋ねた． 「ラビ ， この 人が 生まれつき 目が 見えないのは， だれが 罪を 犯したからですか． 本人ですか． それとも， 兩親ですか． 」
- イエス はお 答えになった． 「本人が 罪を 犯したからでも， 兩親が 罪を 犯したからでもない． 神の 業がこの 人に 現れるためである．
- わたしたちは， わたしをお 遣わしになった 方の 業を， まだ 日のあるうちに 行わねばならない． だれも ¿くことのできない 夜が 來る．
- わたしは， 世にいる 間， 世の 光である． 」

- Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes.
- "Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
- His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, "Isn't this the same man who used to sit and beg?"
- Some claimed that he was. Others said, "No, he only looks like him." But he himself insisted, "I am the man."
- "How then were your eyes opened?" they demanded.

- こう 言ってから， イエス は 地面に 唾をし， 唾で 土をこねてその 人の 目にお 塗りになった．
- そして， 「シロアム ――『遣わされた 者 』という 意味 ――の 池に 行って 洗いなさい 」と 言われた． そこで， 彼は 行って 洗い， 目が 見えるようになって， 歸って 來た．
- 近所の 人¿や， 彼が 物乞いであったのを 前に 見ていた 人¿が， 「これは， 座って 物乞いをしていた 人ではないか 」と 言った．
- 「その 人だ 」と 言う 者もいれば， 「いや 違う． 似ているだけだ 」と 言う 者もいた． 本人は， 「わたしがそうなのです 」と 言った．
- そこで 人¿が， 「では， お 前の 目はどのようにして 開いたのか 」と 言うと，

- He replied, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see."
- "Where is this man?" they asked him. "I don't know," he said.
- They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
- Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man's eyes was a Sabbath.
- Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. "He put mud on my eyes," the man replied, "and I washed, and now I see."

- 彼は 答えた． 「イエス という 方が， 土をこねてわたしの 目に 塗り， 『シロアム に 行って 洗いなさい 』と 言われました． そこで， 行って 洗ったら， 見えるようになったのです． 」
- 人¿が「その 人はどこにいるのか 」と 言うと， 彼は「知りません 」と 言った．
- 人¿は， 前に 盲人であった 人を ファリサイ 派の 人¿のところへ 連れて 行った．
- イエス が 土をこねてその 目を 開けられたのは， 安息日のことであった．
- そこで， ファリサイ 派の 人¿も， どうして 見えるようになったのかと 尋ねた． 彼は 言った． 「あの 方が， わたしの 目にこねた 土を 塗りました． そして， わたしが 洗うと， 見えるようになったのです． 」

- Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." But others asked, "How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?" So they were divided.
- Finally they turned again to the blind man, "What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened." The man replied, "He is a prophet."
- The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man's parents.
- "Is this your son?" they asked. "Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?"
- "We know he is our son," the parents answered, "and we know he was born blind.

- ファリサイ 派の 人¿の 中には， 「その 人は， 安息日を 守らないから， 神のもとから 來た 者ではない 」と 言う 者もいれば， 「どうして 罪のある 人間が， こんなしるしを 行うことができるだろうか 」と 言う 者もいた． こうして， 彼らの 間で 意見が 分かれた．
- そこで， 人¿は 盲人であった 人に 再び 言った． 「目を 開けてくれたということだが， いったい， お 前はあの 人をどう 思うのか． 」彼は「あの 方は 預言者です 」と 言った．
- それでも， ユダヤ 人たちはこの 人について， 盲人であったのに 目が 見えるようになったということを 信じなかった． ついに， 目が 見えるようになった 人の 兩親を 呼び 出して，
- 尋ねた． 「この 者はあなたたちの 息子で， 生まれつき 目が 見えなかったと 言うのか． それが， どうして 今は 目が 見えるのか． 」
- 兩親は 答えて 言った． 「これがわたしどもの 息子で， 生まれつき 目が 見えなかったことは 知っています．

- But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don't know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself."
- His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.
- That was why his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."
- A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. "Give glory to God," they said. "We know this man is a sinner."
- He replied, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!"

- しかし， どうして 今， 目が 見えるようになったかは， 分かりません． だれが 目を 開けてくれたのかも， わたしどもは 分かりません． 本人にお 聞きください． もう 大人ですから， 自分のことは 自分で 話すでしょう． 」
- 兩親がこう 言ったのは， ユダヤ 人たちを 恐れていたからである． ユダヤ 人たちは 旣に， イエス を メシア であると 公に 言い 表す 者がいれば， 會堂から 追放すると 決めていたのである．
- 兩親が， 「もう 大人ですから， 本人にお 聞きください 」と 言ったのは， そのためである．
- さて， ユダヤ 人たちは， 盲人であった 人をもう 一度呼び 出して 言った． 「神の 前で 正直に 答えなさい． わたしたちは， あの 者が 罪ある 人間だと 知っているのだ． 」
- 彼は 答えた． 「あの 方が 罪人かどうか， わたしには 分かりません． ただ 一つ 知っているのは， 目の 見えなかったわたしが， 今は 見えるということです． 」

- Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"
- He answered, "I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?"
- Then they hurled insults at him and said, "You are this fellow's disciple! We are disciples of Moses!
- We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don't even know where he comes from."
- The man answered, "Now that is remarkable! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.

- すると， 彼らは 言った． 「あの 者はお 前にどんなことをしたのか． お 前の 目をどうやって 開けたのか． 」
- 彼は 答えた． 「もうお 話ししたのに， 聞いてくださいませんでした． なぜまた， 聞こうとなさるのですか． あなたがたもあの 方の 弟子になりたいのですか． 」
- そこで， 彼らはののしって 言った． 「お 前はあの 者の 弟子だが， 我¿は モ ― セ の 弟子だ．
- 我¿は， 神が モ ― セ に 語られたことは 知っているが， あの 者がどこから 來たのかは 知らない． 」
- 彼は 答えて 言った． 「あの 方がどこから 來られたか， あなたがたがご 存じないとは， 實に 不思議です． あの 方は， わたしの 目を 開けてくださったのに．

- We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will.
- Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.
- If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."
- To this they replied, "You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!" And they threw him out.
- Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"

- 神は 罪人の 言うことはお 聞きにならないと， わたしたちは 承知しています． しかし， 神をあがめ， その 御心を 行う 人の 言うことは， お 聞きになります．
- 生まれつき 目が 見えなかった 者の 目を 開けた 人がいるということなど， これまで 一度も 聞いたことがありません．
- あの 方が 神のもとから 來られたのでなければ， 何もおできにならなかったはずです． 」
- 彼らは， 「お 前は 全く 罪の 中に 生まれたのに， 我¿に 敎えようというのか 」と 言い 返し， 彼を 外に 追い 出した．
- イエス は 彼が 外に 追い 出されたことをお 聞きになった． そして 彼に 出會うと， 「あなたは 人の 子を 信じるか 」と 言われた．

- "Who is he, sir?" the man asked. "Tell me so that I may believe in him."
- Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you."
- Then the man said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him.
- Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind."
- Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, "What? Are we blind too?"

- 彼は 答えて 言った． 「主よ， その 方はどんな 人ですか． その 方を 信じたいのですが． 」
- イエス は 言われた． 「あなたは， もうその 人を 見ている． あなたと 話しているのが， その 人だ． 」
- 彼が， 「主よ， 信じます 」と 言って， ひざまずくと，
- イエス は 言われた． 「わたしがこの 世に 來たのは， 裁くためである． こうして， 見えない 者は 見えるようになり， 見える 者は 見えないようになる． 」
- イエス と 一緖に 居合わせた ファリサイ 派の 人¿は， これらのことを 聞いて， 「我¿も 見えないということか 」と 言った．

- Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
|
- イエス は 言われた． 「見えなかったのであれば， 罪はなかったであろう． しかし， 今， 『見える 』とあなたたちは 言っている． だから， あなたたちの 罪は 殘る． 」
