- What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered in this matter?
- If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about--but not before God.
- What does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."
- Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation.
- However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness.

- 그러면 우리 조상 아브라함에 대해서는 어떤 결론을 내릴 수 있습니까?
- 만일 아브라함이 행위로 의롭다는 인정을 받았다면 자랑할 것이 있었을 것입니다. 그러나 사실 그에게는 하나님 앞에서 자랑할 것이 아무것도 없었습니다.
- 성경에는 '아브라함이 하나님을 믿었으므로 하나님은 이 믿음 때문에 그를 의롭게 여기셨다.' 라고 기록되어 있습니다.
- 일해서 받는 삯은 정당한 댓가이지 선물로 거저 받는 것이 아닙니다.
- 그러나 아무 공로가 없어도 경건치 않은 사람을 의롭다고 하시는 하나님을 믿는 사람에게는 그의 믿음이 의로운 것으로 인정을 받습니다.

- David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
- "Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
- Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him."
- Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham's faith was credited to him as righteousness.
- Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before!

- 이처럼 공로가 없어도 하나님이 의롭다고 인정해 주는 사람의 행복에 대해서 다윗은 이렇게 말하고 있습니다.
- '잘못을 용서받고 하나님이 죄를 덮어 주신 사람은 행복하다!
- 주께서 그 죄를 인정하지 않는 사람도 행복하다.'
- 그렇다면 이런 행복은 할례를 받은 사람만이 누릴 수 있는 것입니까, 아니면 할례를 받지 못한 사람도 누릴 수 있는 것입니까? 우리는 아브라함이 믿음으로 의롭다는 인정을 받았다고 말했습니다.
- 그러면 언제 아브라함의 믿음이 인정을 받았습니까? 할례를 받은 후입니까, 받기 전입니까? 그것은 할례를 받은 후가 아니라 받기 전이었습니다.

- And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them.
- And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

- 아브라함은 할례를 받기 전에 이미 믿음으로 의롭다는 인정을 받은 표로서 후에 할례를 받았습니다. 그래서 아브라함은 할례를 받지 않고도 하나님을 믿어 의롭다는 인정을 받은 모든 사람들의 조상이 되었습니다.
- 그는 또 할례를 받은 사람들의 조상이기도 합니다. 다시 말해서 그는 할례를 받은 사람들뿐만 아니라 우리 조상 아브라함이 할례를 받기 전에 가졌던 믿음을 좇아 사는 사람들의 조상도 되는 것입니다.
