  1. Surely you remember, brothers, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you.
  2. You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed.
  3. For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,
  4. encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.
  5. And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.
  1. For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.
  2. Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:
  3. As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,
  4. That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
  5. For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
  1. For you, brothers, became imitators of God's churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own countrymen the same things those churches suffered from the Jews,
  2. who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to all men
  3. in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last.
  4. But, brothers, when we were torn away from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.
  5. For we wanted to come to you--certainly I, Paul, did, again and again--but Satan stopped us.
  1. For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:
  2. Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:
  3. Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.
  4. But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.
  5. Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.
  1. For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?
  2. Indeed, you are our glory and joy.
  1. For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?
  2. For ye are our glory and joy.

  1. So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens.
  2. We sent Timothy, who is our brother and God's fellow workerin spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,
  3. so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. You know quite well that we were destined for them.
  4. In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know.
  5. For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless.
  1. Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;
  2. And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:
  3. That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.
  4. For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.
  5. For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
  1. But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you.
  2. Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith.
  3. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.
  4. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?
  5. Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.
  1. But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:
  2. Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:
  3. For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.
  4. For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;
  5. Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?
  1. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you.
  2. May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.
  3. May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.
  1. Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.
  2. And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:
  3. To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.
