  1. For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance--now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.
  2. In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it,
  3. because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living.
  4. This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.
  5. When Moses had proclaimed every commandment of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.
  1. For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
  2. For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it.
  3. For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives.
  4. Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood.
  5. For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,
  1. He said, "This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep."
  2. In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies.
  3. In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
  4. It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
  5. For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God's presence.
  1. saying, "THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU."
  2. And in the same way he sprinkled both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood.
  3. And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
  4. Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
  5. For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;
  1. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.
  2. Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.
  3. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,
  4. so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
  1. nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood that is not his own.
  2. Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
  3. And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,
  4. so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.
