	사무엘상 11:1-13:23 왕으로 선출되었으나 명목상의 왕에 불과하던 사울은 길르앗 야베스 전투에서 승리함으로 왕권을 확립하였다. 사무엘은 백성들에게 고별 설교를 통해 그들의 잘못을 지적하며, 오직 하나님을 경외할 것을 권고했다. 블레셋과의 전투에 임한 사울이 전세가 위급한 가운데 하나님께 잘못된 제사를 드리자 사무엘은 그의 왕권이 길지 못할 것을 예고했다.

	사울의 야베스 구원(11:1-11:15)

암몬 사람 나하스가 올라와서, 길르앗의 야베스를 포위하였다. 그러자 야베스 사람들이 모두 나하스에게 "우리와 조약을 맺읍시다. 우리가 당신을 섬기겠습니다" 하고 제안하였다.

그러나 암몬 사람 나하스는 "내가 너희의 오른쪽 눈을 모조리 빼겠다. 온 이스라엘을 이같이 모욕하는 조건에서만 너희와 조약을 맺겠다" 하고 대답하였다.

야베스 장로들이 또 그에게 제안하였다. "우리에게 이레 동안만 말미를 주셔서, 우리가 이스라엘 모든 지역으로 전령들을 보내도록 하여 주십시오. 우리를 구하여 줄 사람이 아무도 없으면, 우리가 항복하겠습니다."

전령들이, 사울이 살고 있는 기브아에 가서 백성에게 그 사실을 알리니, 백성들이 모두 큰소리로 울었다.

마침 사울이 밭에서 소를 몰고 오다가, 무슨 일이 일어났기에 백성이 울고 있느냐고 물었다. 사람들은 야베스에서 온 전령들이 한 말을 그에게 일러주었다.

Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh Gilead. And all the men of Jabesh said to him, "Make a treaty with us, and we will be subject to you."

But Nahash the Ammonite replied, "I will make a treaty with you only on the condition that I gouge out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace on all Israel."

The elders of Jabesh said to him, "Give us seven days so we can send messengers throughout Israel; if no one comes to rescue us, we will surrender to you."

When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported these terms to the people, they all wept aloud.

Just then Saul was returning from the fields, behind his oxen, and he asked, "What is wrong with the people? Why are they weeping?" Then they repeated to him what the men of Jabesh had said.

이 말을 듣고 있을 때에, 사울에게 하나님의 영이 세차게 내리니, 그가 무섭게 분노를 터뜨렸다.

사울은 겨릿소 두 마리를 잡아서 여러 토막으로 자른 다음에, 그것을 전령들에게 나누어 주고, 이스라엘 모든 지역으로 말을 전하라고 보냈다. "누구든지 사울과 사무엘을 따라나서지 않으면, 그 집의 소들도 이런 꼴을 당할 것이다." 주님께서 온 백성을 두려움에 사로잡히게 하시니, 모두 하나같이 그를 따라나섰다.

사울이 그들을 베섹에 모으고 수를 세어 보니, 이스라엘에서 삼십만 명이 왔고 유다에서 삼만 명이 왔다.

기브아 사람들이 야베스에서 온 전령들에게 말하였다. "길르앗의 야베스 사람들에게 가서, 내일 햇볕이 뜨겁게 내리쬘 때쯤에는 구출될 것이라고 전하여라." 전령들이 돌아가서 야베스 사람들에게 소식을 전하니, 그들이 모두 기뻐하였다.

그래서 야베스 사람들이 암몬 사람들에게 회답하였다. "우리가 내일 당신들에게 나아가 항복하겠습니다. 그 때 가서는 우리에게 하고 싶은 대로 하시오."

When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came upon him in power, and he burned with anger.

He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming, "This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel." Then the terror of the LORD fell on the people, and they turned out as one man.

When Saul mustered them at Bezek, the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

They told the messengers who had come, "Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, 'By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be delivered.' " When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated.

They said to the Ammonites, "Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us whatever seems good to you."

다음날 아침 일찍 사울은 군인들을 세 부대로 나누어 가지고, 새벽녘에 적진 한복판으로 들어가서, 날이 한창 뜨거울 때까지 암몬 사람들을 쳐서 죽였다. 살아 남은 사람들은 다 흩어져서, 두 사람도 함께 있는 일이 없었다.

백성이 사무엘에게 와서 말하였다. "사울이 어떻게 우리의 왕이 될 수 있느냐고 떠들던 자들이 누구입니까? 그런 자들을 내주십시오. 우리가 그들을 쳐서 죽이겠습니다."

그러자 사울이 나서서 말하였다. "오늘은 주님께서 이스라엘 백성을 구원하여 주신 날이오. 오늘은 사람을 죽이지 못하오."

사무엘이 백성들에게 말하였다. "우리가 길갈로 가서, 사울이 우리의 왕이라는 것을 거기에서 새롭게 선포합시다."

그래서 온 백성이 길갈로 가서 그 곳 길갈에 계시는 주님 앞에서 사울을 왕으로 세웠다. 그들은 거기에서 짐승을 잡아서 주님께 화목제물로 바쳤다. 거기에서 사울과 모든 이스라엘 사람들이 함께 크게 기뻐하였다.

The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions; during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

The people then said to Samuel, "Who was it that asked, 'Shall Saul reign over us?' Bring these men to us and we will put them to death."

But Saul said, "No one shall be put to death today, for this day the LORD has rescued Israel."

Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal and there reaffirm the kingship."

So all the people went to Gilgal and confirmed Saul as king in the presence of the LORD. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the LORD, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration.

	사무엘의 고별사(12:1-12:25)

사무엘이 온 이스라엘 백성에게 말하였다. "나는 당신들이 나에게 요청한 것을 다 들어 주어서, 백성을 다스릴 왕을 세웠습니다.

그러니 이제부터는 왕이 백성들을 인도할 것입니다. 나는 이제 늙어서 머리가 희게 세었고, 나의 아들들이 이렇게 당신들과 함께 있습니다. 나는 젊어서부터 오늘까지 당신들을 지도하여 왔습니다.

내가 여기 있으니, 주님 앞에서, 그리고 주님께서 기름부어 세우신 왕 앞에서, 나를 고발할 일이 있으면 하십시오. 내가 누구의 소를 빼앗은 일이 있습니까? 내가 누구의 나귀를 빼앗은 일이 있습니까? 내가 누구를 속인 일이 있습니까? 누구를 억압한 일이 있습니까? 내가 누구한테서 뇌물을 받고 눈감아 준 일이 있습니까? 그런 일이 있다면, 나를 고발하십시오. 내가 당신들에게 갚겠습니다."

이스라엘 백성이 대답하였다. "우리를 속이시거나 억압하신 적이 없습니다. 누구에게서든지 무엇 하나 빼앗으신 적도 없습니다."

사무엘이 그들에게 말하였다. "당신들이 나에게서 아무런 잘못도 찾지 못한 것에 대하여 오늘 주님께서 증인이 되셨고, 주님께서 기름부어 세우신 왕도 증인이 되셨습니다." 그러자 온 백성이 "그렇습니다. 주님께서 우리의 증인이 되셨습니다!" 하고 대답하였다.

Samuel said to all Israel, "I have listened to everything you said to me and have set a king over you.

Now you have a king as your leader. As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have been your leader from my youth until this day.

Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the LORD and his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe to make me shut my eyes? If I have done any of these, I will make it right."

"You have not cheated or oppressed us," they replied. "You have not taken anything from anyone's hand."

Samuel said to them, "The LORD is witness against you, and also his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand." "He is witness," they said.

사무엘이 백성에게 말하였다. "모세와 아론을 세우시고, 당신들의 조상을 이집트 땅에서 데리고 올라오신 분이 바로 주님이십니다.

그러니 그대로 서 있으십시오. 내가, 주님께서 당신들과 당신들의 조상을 구원하려고 하신 그 의로운 일을 주님 앞에서 증거로 제시하고자 합니다.

야곱이 가족을 데리고 이집트로 내려간 다음에, （이집트 사람들이 야곱의 가족을 억압할 때에,） 그들은 주님께 매달려 살려 달라고 부르짖었습니다. 그래서 주님께서는 모세와 아론을 보내셨고, 조상을 이집트에서 인도해 내셨고, 그들을 이 땅에 정착시키셨습니다.

그런데도 백성은 주 그들의 하나님을 잊어버리고 말았습니다. 그래서 주님께서는 조상들을 블레셋 사람과 모압 왕과 하솔 왕 야빈의 군사령관인 시스라에게 넘기시고, 우리 조상들을 쳐서 정복하게 하셨습니다.

조상들은 주님께 살려 달라고 부르짖으면서 '우리는 주님을 버리고, 바알 신들과 아스다롯 여신들을 섬기는 죄를 지었습니다. 이제 원수들에게서 우리를 건져 주시기 바랍니다. 그러면 우리가 주님만을 섬기겠습니다' 하고 호소하였습니다.

Then Samuel said to the people, "It is the LORD who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought your forefathers up out of Egypt.

Now then, stand here, because I am going to confront you with evidence before the LORD as to all the righteous acts performed by the LORD for you and your fathers.

"After Jacob entered Egypt, they cried to the LORD for help, and the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your forefathers out of Egypt and settled them in this place.

"But they forgot the LORD their God; so he sold them into the hand of Sisera, the commander of the army of Hazor, and into the hands of the Philistines and the king of Moab, who fought against them.

They cried out to the LORD and said, 'We have sinned; we have forsaken the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths. But now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve you.'

주님께서 이 호소를 들으시고 여룹바알과 베단과 입다와 나 사무엘을 보내셔서, 사방으로 에워싼 원수들에게서 우리를 건져 주셔서, 안전하게 살 수 있도록 하셨습니다.

그런데도 암몬 왕 나하스가 우리를 치러 오자, 주 하나님이 우리의 왕인데도, 그것을 보았을 때에 당신들은, '안 되겠습니다. 우리를 다스릴 왕이 꼭 있어야 하겠습니다' 하고 나에게 말하였습니다.

이제 당신들이 뽑은 왕, 당신들이 요구한 왕이 여기에 있습니다. 주님께서 주신 왕이 여기에 있습니다.

만일 당신들이 주님을 두려워하여 그분만을 섬기며, 그분에게 순종하여 주님의 명령을 거역하지 않으며, 당신들이나 당신들을 다스리는 왕이 다 같이 주 하나님을 따라 산다면, 모든 일이 잘 될 것입니다.

그러나 주님께 순종하지 않고 주님의 명령을 거역한다면, 주님께서 손을 들어 조상들을 치신 것처럼, 당신들을 쳐서 멸망시키실 것입니다.

Then the LORD sent Jerub-Baal, Barak, Jephthah and Samuel, and he delivered you from the hands of your enemies on every side, so that you lived securely.

"But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, 'No, we want a king to rule over us'-even though the LORD your God was your king.

Now here is the king you have chosen, the one you asked for; see, the LORD has set a king over you.

If you fear the LORD and serve and obey him and do not rebel against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the LORD your God-good!

But if you do not obey the LORD, and if you rebel against his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your fathers.

당신들은 그대로 서서, 주님께서 이제 곧 하실 큰 일을 눈으로 직접 보십시오.

지금은 밀을 거두어들이는 때가 아닙니까? 그렇더라도 내가 주님께 아뢰면, 주님께서 천둥을 일으키시고 비를 내리실 것입니다. 그러면 왕을 요구한 것이, 주님께서 보시기에 얼마나 큰 죄악이었는지를 밝히 알게 될 것입니다."

사무엘이 주님께 아뢰니, 바로 그 날로 주님께서 천둥을 보내시고, 비를 내리셨다. 온 백성이 주님과 사무엘을 매우 두려워하였다.

모든 백성이 사무엘에게 간청하였다. "종들을 생각하시고 주 하나님께 기도하셔서, 우리가 죽지 않게 해주십시오. 우리가 우리의 모든 죄에 왕을 구하는 악을 더하였습니다."

사무엘이 백성에게 말하였다. "두려워하지 마십시오! 당신들이 이 모든 악행을 저지른 것은 사실이나, 이제부터는 주님을 따르는 길에서 벗어나지 말고, 마음을 다 바쳐 주님을 섬기십시오!

"Now then, stand still and see this great thing the LORD is about to do before your eyes!

Is it not wheat harvest now? I will call upon the LORD to send thunder and rain. And you will realize what an evil thing you did in the eyes of the LORD when you asked for a king."

Then Samuel called upon the LORD, and that same day the LORD sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe of the LORD and of Samuel.

The people all said to Samuel, "Pray to the LORD your God for your servants so that we will not die, for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king."

"Do not be afraid," Samuel replied. "You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.

도움을 주지도 못하고 구원하지도 못하는 쓸데없는 우상에게 반하여, 그것을 따르는 일이 없도록 하십시오. 그것들은 헛된 것입니다.

주님께서는 당신들을 기꺼이 자기의 백성으로 삼아 도와 주시기로 하셨기 때문에, 주님께서는 자기의 귀한 명예를 지키기 위해서라도, 자기의 백성을 버리지 않으실 것입니다.

나는 당신들이 잘 되도록 기도할 것입니다. 내가 기도하는 일을 그친다면, 그것은 내가 하나님께 죄를 짓는 것입니다. 그런 일은 없을 것입니다. 오히려 나는, 당신들이 가장 선하고 가장 바른길로 가도록 가르치겠습니다.

당신들은 주님만을 두려워하며, 마음을 다 바쳐서 진실하게 그분만을 섬기십시오. 주님께서 당신들을 생각하시고 얼마나 놀라운 일들을 하셨는가를 기억하십시오.

만일 당신들이 여전히 악한 행동을 한다면, 당신들도 망하고 왕도 망할 것입니다."

Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless.

For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people, because the LORD was pleased to make you his own.

As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right.

But be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.

Yet if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will be swept away."

	사무엘의 책망(13:1-13:23)

사울이 왕이 되었을 때에, 그의 나이는 서른 살이었다. 그가 이스라엘을 다스린 것은 마흔두 해였다.

그는 이스라엘에서 삼천 명을 뽑아서, 그 가운데서 이천 명은 자기와 함께 믹마스와 베델 산지에 있게 하고, 일천 명은 요나단과 함께 베냐민 지파의 땅 기브아로 보내고, 나머지 군대는 모두 각자의 집으로 돌려보냈다.

요나단이 게바에 있는 블레셋 사람의 수비대를 치자, 블레셋 사람들이 그 소식을 들었다. 사울이 온 나라에 나팔을 불어서, 히브리 사람 소집령을 내렸다.

온 이스라엘 백성은, 사울이 블레셋 수비대를 쳐서, 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람들의 미움을 사게 되었다는 말을 듣고, 길갈로 모여 와서 사울을 따랐다.

블레셋 사람들도 이스라엘과 싸우려고 모였는데, 병거가 삼만에다가, 기마가 육천이나 되었고, 보병은 바닷가의 모래알처럼 많아서 셀 수가 없었다. 블레셋 군대는 벳아웬의 동쪽 믹마스로 올라와서 진을 쳤다.

Saul was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-two years.

Saul chose three thousand men from Israel; two thousand were with him at Micmash and in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan at Gibeah in Benjamin. The rest of the men he sent back to their homes.

Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost at Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul had the trumpet blown throughout the land and said, "Let the Hebrews hear!"

So all Israel heard the news: "Saul has attacked the Philistine outpost, and now Israel has become a stench to the Philistines." And the people were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.

The Philistines assembled to fight Israel, with three thousand chariots, six thousand charioteers, and soldiers as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They went up and camped at Micmash, east of Beth Aven.

이스라엘 사람들은, 자기들이 위급하게 되었다는 것과 군대가 포위되었다는 것을 알고는, 저마다 굴이나 숲이나 바위틈이나 구덩이나 웅덩이 속으로 기어들어가 숨었다.

히브리 사람들 가운데서 더러는 요단 강을 건너, 갓과 길르앗 지역으로 달아났다. 사울은 그대로 길갈에 남아 있었고, 그를 따르는 군인들은 모두 떨고 있었다.

사울은 사무엘의 말대로 이레 동안 사무엘을 기다렸으나, 그는 길갈로 오지 않았다. 그러자 백성은 사울에게서 떠나 흩어지기 시작하였다.

사울은 사람들을 시켜 번제물과 화목제물을 가지고 오라고 한 다음에, 자신이 직접 번제를 올렸다.

사울이 막 번제를 올리고 나자, 사무엘이 도착하였다. 사울이 나가 그를 맞으며 인사를 드리니,

When the men of Israel saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns.

Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking with fear.

He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul's men began to scatter.

So he said, "Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings. " And Saul offered up the burnt offering.

Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him.

사무엘이 꾸짖었다. "임금님이 어찌하여 이런 일을 하셨습니까?" 사울이 대답하였다. "백성은 나에게서 떠나 흩어지고, 제사장께서는 약속한 날짜에 오시지도 않고, 블레셋 사람은 믹마스에 모여들고 있었습니다.

이러다가는 제가 주님께 은혜를 구하기도 전에, 블레셋 사람이 길갈로 내려와서 칠 것 같은 생각이 들어서, 할 수 없이 번제를 드렸습니다."

사무엘이 사울에게 말하였다. "해서는 안 될 일을 하셨습니다. 주 하나님이 명하신 것을 임금님이 지키지 않으셨습니다. 명령을 어기지 않으셨더라면, 임금님과 임금님의 자손이 언제까지나 이스라엘을 다스리도록 주님께서 영원토록 굳게 세워 주셨을 것입니다.

그러나 이제는 임금님의 왕조가 더 이상 계속되지 못할 것입니다. 주님께서 임금님께 명하신 것을 임금님이 지키지 않으셨기 때문에, 주님께서는 달리 마음에 맞는 사람을 찾아서, 그를, 당신의 백성을 다스릴 영도자로 세우셨습니다."

사무엘이 일어나서 길갈을 떠나, 베냐민 땅의 기브아로 올라갔다. 사울이 자기와 함께 있는 백성들을 세어 보니, 약 육백 명쯤 되었다.

"What have you done?" asked Samuel. Saul replied, "When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Micmash,

I thought, 'Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the LORD's favor.' So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering."

"You acted foolishly," Samuel said. "You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.

But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the LORD's command."

Then Samuel left Gilgal and went up to Gibeah in Benjamin, and Saul counted the men who were with him. They numbered about six hundred.

사울과 그의 아들 요나단은 자기들과 함께 있는 백성들을 거느리고 베냐민 땅 게바에 머물고 있었고, 블레셋 군대는 믹마스에 진을 치고 있었다.

블레셋 진영에서는 이미 특공대를 셋으로 나누어 습격하려고 출동하였다. 한 부대는 수알 땅 오브라 쪽으로 가고,

다른 한 부대는 벳호론 쪽으로 가고, 나머지 한 부대는 스보임 골짜기와 멀리 광야가 내려다보이는 경계선 쪽으로 떠났다.

당시 이스라엘 땅에는 대장장이가 한 명도 없었다. 히브리 사람이 칼이나 창을 만드는 것을, 블레셋 사람들이 허용하지 않았기 때문이다.

이스라엘 사람들은 보습이나 곡괭이나 도끼나 낫을 벼릴 일이 있으면, 블레셋 사람에게로 가야만 하였다.

Saul and his son Jonathan and the men with them were staying in Gibeah in Benjamin, while the Philistines camped at Micmash.

Raiding parties went out from the Philistine camp in three detachments. One turned toward Ophrah in the vicinity of Shual,

another toward Beth Horon, and the third toward the borderland overlooking the Valley of Zeboim facing the desert.

Not a blacksmith could be found in the whole land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, "Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears!"

So all Israel went down to the Philistines to have their plowshares, mattocks, axes and sickles sharpened.

보습이나 곡괭이를 벼리는 데는 삼분의 이 세겔이 들었고, 도끼나 낫을 가는 데는 삼분의 일 세겔이 들었다.

그래서 전쟁이 일어났을 때에, 사울과 요나단을 따라나선 모든 군인의 손에는 칼이나 창이 없었다. 오직 사울과 그의 아들 요나단의 손에만 그런 무기가 있었다.

블레셋 군대의 전초부대는 이미 믹마스 어귀에 나와 있었다.

The price was two thirds of a shekel for sharpening plowshares and mattocks, and a third of a shekel for sharpening forks and axes and for repointing goads.

So on the day of the battle not a soldier with Saul and Jonathan had a sword or spear in his hand; only Saul and his son Jonathan had them.

Now a detachment of Philistines had gone out to the pass at Micmash.
