- 시리아 왕의 군사령관 나아만 장군은, 왕이 아끼는 큰 인물이고, 존경받는 사람이었다. 주님께서 그를 시켜 시리아에 구원을 베풀어 주신 일이 있었다. 나아만은 강한 용사였는데, 그만 나병에 걸리고 말았다.
- 시리아가 군대를 일으켜서 이스라엘 땅에 쳐들어갔을 때에, 그 곳에서 어린 소녀 하나를 잡아 온 적이 있었다. 그 소녀는 나아만의 아내의 시중을 들고 있었다.
- 그 소녀가 여주인에게 말하였다. "주인 어른께서 사마리아에 있는 한 예언자를 만나 보시면 좋겠습니다. 그분이라면 어른의 나병을 고치실 수가 있을 것입니다."
- 이 말을 들은 나아만은 시리아 왕에게 나아가서, 이스라엘 땅에서 온 한 소녀가 한 말을 보고하였다.
- 시리아 왕은 기꺼이 허락하였다. "내가 이스라엘 왕에게 편지를 써 보내겠으니, 가 보도록 하시오." 나아만은 은 열 달란트와 금 육천 개와 옷 열 벌을 가지고 가서,

- Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper.
- And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman's wife.
- And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy.
- And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maid that is of the land of Israel.
- And the king of Syria said, Go to, go, and I will send a letter unto the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of raiment.

- 왕의 편지를 이스라엘 왕에게 전하였다. 그 편지에는 이렇게 씌어 있었다. "내가 이 편지와 함께 나의 신하 나아만을 귀하에게 보냅니다. 부디 그의 나병을 고쳐 주시기 바랍니다."
- 이스라엘 왕은 그 편지를 읽고 낙담하여, 자기의 옷을 찢으며, 주위를 둘러보고 말하였다. "내가 사람을 죽이고 살리는 신이라도 된다는 말인가? 이렇게 사람을 보내어 나병을 고쳐 달라고 하니 될 말인가? 이것은 분명, 공연히 트집을 잡아 싸울 기회를 찾으려는 것이니, 자세히들 알아보도록 하시오."
- 이스라엘 왕이 낙담하여 옷을 찢었다는 소식을, 하나님의 사람 엘리사가 듣고, 왕에게 사람을 보내어 말하였다. "어찌하여 옷을 찢으셨습니까? 그 사람을 나에게 보내 주십시오. 이스라엘에 예언자가 있음을 그에게 알려 주겠습니다."
- 나아만은 군마와 병거를 거느리고 와서, 엘리사의 집 문 앞에 멈추어 섰다.
- 엘리사는 사환을 시켜서 나아만에게, 요단 강으로 가서 몸을 일곱 번 씻으면, 장군의 몸이 다시 깨끗하게 될 것이라고 말하였다.

- And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, Now when this letter is come unto thee, behold, I have therewith sent Naaman my servant to thee, that thou mayest recover him of his leprosy.
- And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.
- And it was so, when Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.
- So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha.
- And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.

- 나아만은 이 말을 듣고 화가 나서 발길을 돌렸다. "적어도, 엘리사가 직접 나와서 정중히 나를 맞이하고, 주 그의 하나님의 이름을 부르며 상처 위에 직접 안수하여, 나병을 고쳐 주어야 도리가 아닌가?
- 다마스쿠스에 있는 아마나 강이나 바르발 강이, 이스라엘에 있는 강물보다 좋지 않다는 말이냐? 강에서 씻으려면, 거기에서 씻으면 될 것 아닌가? 우리 나라의 강물에서는 씻기지 않기라도 한다는 말이냐?" 하고 불평하였다. 그렇게 불평을 하고 나서, 나아만은 발길을 돌이켜, 분을 참지 못하며 떠나갔다.
- 그러나 부하들이 그에게 가까이 와서 말하였다. "장군님, 그 예언자가 이보다 더한 일을 하라고 하였다면, 하지 않으셨겠습니까? 다만 몸이나 씻으시라는데, 그러면 깨끗해진다는데, 그것쯤 못할 까닭이 어디에 있습니까?"
- 그리하여 나아만은 하나님의 사람이 시킨 대로, 요단 강으로 가서 일곱 번 몸을 씻었다. 그러자 그의 살결이 어린 아이의 살결처럼 새 살로 돌아와, 깨끗하게 나았다.
- 나아만과 그의 모든 수행원이 하나님의 사람에게로 되돌아와, 엘리사 앞에 서서 말하였다. "이제야 나는 온 세계에서 이스라엘 밖에는 하나님이 계시지 않다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 부디, 예언자님의 종인 제가 드리는 이 선물을 받아 주십시오."

- But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.
- Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.
- And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?
- Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
- And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant.

- 그러나 엘리사는 "내가 섬기는 주님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하지만, 나는 그것을 받을 수가 없소" 하고 사양하였다. 나아만이 받아 달라고 다시 권하였지만, 엘리사는 끝내 거절하였다.
- 나아만이 말하였다. "정 그러시다면, 나귀 두어 마리에 실을 만큼의 흙을 예언자님의 종인 저에게 주시기 바랍니다. 예언자님의 종인 저는, 이제부터 주님 이외에 다른 신들에게는 번제나 희생제를 드리지 않겠습니다.
- 그러나 한 가지만은 예언자님의 종인 저를 주님께서 용서하여 주시기를 바랍니다. 제가 모시는 왕께서 림몬의 성전에 예배드리려고 그 곳으로 들어갈 때에, 그는 언제나 저의 부축을 받아야 하므로, 저도 허리를 굽히고 림몬의 성전에 들어가야 합니다. 그러므로 제가 림몬의 성전에서 허리를 굽힐 때에, 주님께서 이 일 때문에 예언자님의 종인 저를 벌하지 마시고, 용서해 주시기를 바랍니다."
- 그러자 엘리사가 나아만에게 말하였다. "좋소, 안심하고 돌아가시오." 이렇게 하여 나아만은 엘리사를 떠나 얼마쯤 길을 갔다.
- 그 때에 하나님의 사람 엘리사의 시종인 게하시가 이런 생각을 하였다. '나의 주인께서는 이 시리아 사람 나아만이 가져와 손수 바친 것을 받지 않으셨구나. 주님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하지만, 내가 그를 뒤쫓아가서 무엇이든 좀 얻어 와야 하겠다.'

- But he said, As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused.
- And Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant two mules' burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the LORD.
- In this thing the LORD pardon thy servant, that when my master goeth into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon thy servant in this thing.
- And he said unto him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way.
- But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him.

- 그래서 게하시는 곧 나아만을 뒤쫓아 달려갔다. 나아만은 자기를 뒤쫓아 달려오는 사람을 보고, 그를 맞이하려고 수레에서 내려 "별일 없지요?" 하고 물었다.
- 게하시가 대답하였다. "별일은 없습니다만, 지금 주인께서 나를 보내시면서, 방금 에브라임 산지에서 예언자 수련생 가운데서 두 젊은이가 왔는데, 그들에게 은 한 달란트와 옷 두 벌을 주면 좋겠다고 말씀하셨습니다."
- 그러자 나아만은 "드리다뿐이겠습니까? 두 달란트를 드리겠습니다" 하고는, 게하시를 강권하여, 은 두 달란트를 두 자루에 넣고, 옷 두 벌을 꺼내어서 두 부하에게 주어, 게하시 앞에서 메고 가게 하였다.
- 언덕에 이르자, 게하시는 그들의 손에서 그것을 받아 집 안에 들여 놓고, 그 사람들을 돌려보냈다.
- 그리고 그가 들어가서 주인 앞에 서자, 엘리사가 그에게 물었다. "게하시야, 어디를 갔다 오는 길이냐?" 그러자 그는 "예언자님의 종인 저는 아무데도 가지 않았습니다" 하고 말하였다.

- So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well?
- And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.
- And Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him.
- And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed.
- But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no whither.

- 그러나 엘리사는 게하시에게 이렇게 말하였다. "어떤 사람이 너를 만나려고 수레에서 내릴 때에, 내 마음이 너와 함께 거기에 가 있지 않은 줄 알았느냐? 지금이 은을 받고 옷을 받고, 올리브 기름과 포도나무와 양과 소와 남녀 종을 취할 때냐?
- 그러므로 나아만의 나병이 네게로 옮아갈 것이고, 네 자손도 영원히 그 병을 앓을 것이다." 게하시가 엘리사에게서 물러나오니, 나병에 걸려, 피부가 눈처럼 하얗게 되었다.

- And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?
- The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.
