- 이러한 일들을 마친 다음에, 지도자들이 나에게 와서 말하였다. "이스라엘 백성은, 제사장이나 레위 사람들마저도, 이방 백성과 관계를 끊지 않고, 가나안 사람과 헷 사람과 브리스 사람과 여부스 사람과 암몬 사람과 모압 사람과 이집트 사람과 아모리 사람이 하는 역겨운 일을 따라서 합니다.
- 이방 사람의 딸을 아내로 또는 며느리로 맞아들였으므로, 주변의 여러 족속의 피가 거룩한 핏줄에 섞여 갑니다. 지도자와 관리라는 자들이 오히려 이러한 일에 앞장을 섭니다."
- 이 말을 들은 나는, 너무나 기가 막혀서, 겉옷과 속옷을 찢고, 머리카락과 수염을 뜯으면서 주저앉았다.
- 그러나 이스라엘의 하나님이 하시는 말씀을 두려워하는 사람들도 있었다. 내가 저녁 제사 때까지 넋을 잃고 앉아 있는 동안에, 그들은 포로로 잡혀 갔다가 되돌아온 백성이 저지른, 이렇게 큰 배신을 보고서, 나에게로 모여들었다.
- 나는 슬픔을 가누지 못한 채로 앉아 있다가, 저녁 제사 때가 되었을 때에 일어나서, 찢어진 겉옷과 속옷을 몸에 그대로 걸치고, 무릎을 꿇고, 두 팔을 들고서, 주 나의 하나님께

- Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.
- For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass.
- And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied.
- Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice.
- And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God,

- 기도를 드렸다."하나님, 너무나도 부끄럽고 낯이 뜨거워서, 하나님 앞에서 차마 얼굴을 들 수 없습니다. 우리가 지은 죄는, 우리 스스로가 감당할 수 없을 만큼 불어났고, 우리가 저지른 잘못은 하늘에까지 닿았습니다.
- 조상 때로부터 오늘에 이르기까지, 우리가 저지른 잘못이 너무나도 큽니다. 우리가 지은 죄 때문에, 우리뿐만 아니라 우리의 왕들과 제사장들까지도, 여러 나라 왕들의 칼에 맞아 죽거나 사로잡혀 가고, 재산도 다 빼앗기고, 온갖 수모를 겪었습니다. 이런 일은 오늘에 와서도 마찬가지입니다.
- 그러나 주 우리 하나님께서는, 비록 잠깐이기는 하지만, 우리에게 자비를 베푸시어, 우리 가운데서 얼마쯤을 살아 남게 하셨습니다. 또한 주님께서 거룩하게 여기시는 곳에, 우리가 살아갈 든든한 터전을 마련하여 주셨습니다. 하나님께서는, 우리 눈에서 생기가 돌게 하시고, 잠시나마 종살이에서 벗어나게 하여 주셨습니다.
- 우리가 종살이를 하였지만, 하나님께서는 우리를 언제까지나 종살이를 하도록 내버려 두지 않으시고, 오히려 페르시아의 왕들에게 사랑을 받게 하여 주시고, 또 우리에게 용기를 주셔서, 하나님의 성전을 다시 짓고, 무너진 곳을 다시 쌓아 올리게 하시어, 유다와 예루살렘에서 우리가 이처럼 보호를 받으면서 살아갈 수 있게 하셨습니다.
- 우리의 하나님, 주님께서 이렇게까지 하여 주시는데, 주님의 계명을 저버렸으니, 이제 우리가 무슨 말씀을 드릴 수 있겠습니까?

- And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.
- Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
- And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.
- For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
- And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,

- 주님께서는 일찍이, 주님의 종 예언자들을 시키셔서, 우리가 들어가서 차지할 땅은, 이방 백성이 살면서 더럽힌 땅이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 거기에서 사는 자들이 역겨운 일을 하여서, 땅의 구석구석까지 더러워지지 않은 곳이 없다고 하셨습니다.
- 우리의 딸을 그들의 아들에게 시집 보내지도 말고, 그들의 딸을 며느리로 맞아들이지도 말라고 하셨습니다. 우리가 강해져서, 그 땅에서 나는 좋은 것을 먹으며, 그 땅을 우리 자손에게 영원한 유산으로 물려주려면, 그 땅에 있는 백성이 번영하거나 성공할 틈을 조금도 주지 말아야 한다고 하셨습니다.
- 우리가 당한 일은 모두 우리가 지은 죄와 우리가 저지른 크나큰 잘못 때문입니다. 그렇지만 주 우리의 하나님은, 우리가 지은 죄에 비하여 가벼운 벌을 내리셔서, 우리 백성을 이만큼이나마 살아 남게 하셨습니다.
- 그러므로 다시는 주님의 계명을 어기지 않아야 하였습니다. 역겨운 일을 저지르는 이방 백성들과 결혼도 하지 않아야 하였습니다. 이제 주님께서 분노하셔서, 한 명도 남기지 않고 없애 버리신다고 해도, 드릴 말씀이 없습니다.
- 그렇지만, 주 이스라엘의 하나님, 주님은 너그러우셔서 우리를 이렇게 살아 남게 하셨습니다. 진정, 우리는 우리의 허물을 주님께 자백합니다. 우리 가운데서, 어느 누구도 감히 주님 앞에 나설 수 없습니다."

- Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.
- Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.
- And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;
- Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping?
- O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
