- 네가 높은 사람과 함께 앉아 음식을 먹게 되거든, 너의 앞에 누가 앉았는지를 잘 살펴라.
- 식욕이 마구 동하거든, 목에 칼을 대고서라도 억제하여라.
- 그가 차린 맛난 음식에 욕심을 내지 말아라. 그것은 너를 꾀려는 음식이다.
- 부자가 되려고 애쓰지 말고, 그런 생각을 끊어 버릴 슬기를 가져라.
- 한순간에 없어질 재물을 주목하지 말아라. 재물은 날개를 달고, 독수리처럼 하늘로 날아가 버린다.

- When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
- And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
- Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.
- Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
- Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

- 너는 인색한 사람의 상에서 먹지 말고, 그가 즐기는 맛난 음식을 탐내지 말아라.
- 무릇 그 마음의 생각이 어떠하면 그의 사람됨도 그러하니, 그가 말로는 '먹고 마셔라' 하여도, 그 속마음은 너를 떠나 있다.
- 네가 조금 먹은 것조차 토하겠고, 너의 아첨도 헛된 데로 돌아갈 것이다.

- Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
- For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
- The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
