- 네가 너를 칭찬하지 말고, 남이 너를 칭찬하게 하여라. 칭찬은 남이 하여 주는 것이지, 자기의 입으로 하는 것이 아니다.
- 돌도 무겁고 모래도 짐이 되지만, 어리석은 사람이 성가시게 구는 것은, 이 두 가지보다 더 무겁다.
- 분노는 잔인하고 진노는 범람하는 물과 같다고 하지만, 사람의 질투를 누가 당하여 낼 수 있으랴?
- 드러내 놓고 꾸짖는 것이, 숨은 사랑보다 낫다.

- 배부른 사람은 꿀도 지겨워하지만, 배고픈 사람은 쓴 것도 달게 먹는다.
- 고향을 잃고 떠도는 사람은, 둥지를 잃고 떠도는 새와 같다.
- 향유와 향료가 마음을 즐겁게 하듯이, 친구의 다정한 충고가 그와 같다.
